How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments — mostly for entertainment purposes — is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
4. How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?
A. Dangerous. B. Unhappy.
C. Natural. D. Easy.
5. In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.
A. remain in cages B. behave strangely
C. attack other animals D. enjoy moving around
6. What does the author try to argue in the passage?
A. Zoos are not worth the public support.
B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
7. Although the author argues against zoos, he would still agree that _________.
A. zoos have to keep animals in small cages
B. most animals in zoos are endangered species
C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos
D. it’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats
B 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第二段中“most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes. (大多数动物园仍然是有趣“事物”的“收藏”,而不是保护栖息地。动物园告诉人们,让动物感到无聊、孤独以及远离它们的自然家园是可以接受的。)”可以推断,作者认为动物园里的动物的生活是不幸福的。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“This results in unusual and self-destructive behaviour called zoochosis.” 下文举出例子,如大象的奇怪的行为“making repeated head movements or biting cage bars”和熊的奇怪的行为“walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.”。
根据文章最后一句“Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals' natural habitats.(我们不应该支持动物园,而应该支持致力于保护动物自然栖息地的团体。)” 故选A项。
从文章倒数第二段中“Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programmes because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. (动物园经常谈论他们的圈养繁殖计划,因为他们不想让人们担心一个物种会灭绝。)”可以推断,虽然作者反对动物园,但是他赞成动物园对于濒临灭绝动物的圈养繁殖计划,通过动物园的圈养繁殖来保证动物不会灭绝。故选C项。
C
Weather reports often mention high or low pressure systems headed toward a city or town. If you’re in the path of one of these systems, expect a change in weather conditions. High and low pressure systems operate using similar principles, but the effects they produce differ significantly.
View a weather map, and you may see distinct regions that represent different air masses. An air mass is a region of air that has about the same humidity(湿度)and temperature throughout. When an air mass remains over a location for a while, it decides the characteristics of the region. Air masses can be cold or warm and they may contain wet or dry air. All air masses have the ability to move away from their source region into other locations.
Meteorologists(气象学家)call the boundary between two air masses a front. A cold front’s motion through a warm front is a low-pressure system. If a cold air mass replaces a warm air mass, you have a cold front. Air in the cold air mass is often drier than air in front of it. As the air masses meet, the wind u- sually changes direction and rain or thunderstorms often occur.
A warm front is associated with a high-pressure system and occurs when a warm air mass replaces a colder air mass. A high-pressure system often brings clear, calm weather. Warm fronts travel slowly and are weaker than cold fronts.
Cold fronts move faster than warm fronts because a cold front contains denser air. Cold fronts also of- ten travel from west to east while warm fronts move from north to south. As a warm front approaches, temperatures may rise as warmer air flows in from a warm air mass. However, when the cold front hits, temperatures can drop precipitously within a short time.
8. How is the temperature of a region under a certain air mass?
A. Unusual.
B. Stable.
C. Diverse.
D. Changeable.
9. What happens when two air masses meet?
A. A clear sky appears.
B. A heavy snow is formed.
C. The air becomes drier.
D. The wind changes directions.
10 What does the underlined word “precipitously” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Sharply.
B. Slowly.
C. Hardly.
D. Smoothly.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Formation of Air Masses
B. The New Findings of Meteorologists
C. The Effects of Air Mass and Fronts on Weather
D. The Methods for Accurate Weather Forecasts
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段中“An air mass is a region of air that has about the same humidity(湿度)and temperature throughout. When an air mass remains over a location for a while,it decides the characteristics of the region.(气团是指空气中的湿度和温度都相同的区域。当一个气团停留在一个地方一段时间,它决定了该地区的特征。)”可知,在某种气团控制下的地区,其天气状况是相对稳定的。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“As the air masses meet, the wind usually changes direction and rain or thunderstorms often occur.(当气团相遇时,风通常改变方向,经常下雨或雷暴。)”
A. 故选A。
所以C选项“The effects of air mass and fronts on weather(气团和锋面对天气的影响)”最能概括文章的主旨大意。故选C。
D
Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS. The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google’s and Apple’s role in current and future OS ecosystems.
Among the major strong points, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable (可扩展的) platform, can be applied to various devices, including smart phones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.
Analysts said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei’s change into being a software service provider. Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was basically “out of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy (自主权)”. Ren called on the company’s staff to “dare to lead the world” in software.
“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware (硬件), but nowadays, Huawei doesn’t have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that’s the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world’s largest smart phone maker, Huawei’s national smart phone market share (份额) has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS designed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smart phones, and that will take at least two to three years.
Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS? That’s a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have joined in the set-up of the Harmony ecosystem.
12. What advantage does the HarmonyOS have over other operating systems?
A. It provides users with a secure experience.
B. It operates faster than Google system.
C. It works on a wide range of equipment.
D. It has different versions in different countries.
13. What can you infer from Ren Zhengfei’s words?
A. Huawei’s change is challenging.
B Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
C. The company’s staff need to improve their skills.
D. Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
B. The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
C. Smartphone sales in the national market.
D. The future software ambition of Huawei.
15. What does Liang expect partners and developers to do?
A. Create enough applications.
B. Update the original devices.
C. Cooperate with experts in various fields.
D. Build the HarmonyOS ecosystem.
C 13. D 14. A 15. D

根据第三段中“Huawei's founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was fundamentally outside of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy(自主权)(华为的创始人兼首席执行官任正非说,该公司专注于软件,因为该领域的未来发展从根本上说是不受美国控制的,我们将拥有更大的独立性和自主权)”可知,任正非的话表明了华为将打破对美国的依赖。
根据第四段中“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware(硬件), but currently, Huawei doesn't have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that's the most difficult part(软件系统的成功总是要依靠硬件,但目前,华为没有足够的硬件来支持其软件的雄心——这是最困难的部分。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system.(此外,梁建章指出,一个生态系统将永远是一个操作系统成功的决定性因素。)”以及“ So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have participated in the construction of the Harmony ecosystem.(到目前为止,已经有300多个应用和服务合作伙伴、1000个硬件合作伙伴和50万名开发者参与了Harmony生态系统的建设。)”
