Travel is the only thing that will really make you richer. While it's very valid, there're many times when we are simply unable to travel for certain reasons. However, there's still a great and affordable way to experience new places: books.
    Wild
Wild is Cheryl Strayed's beautifully written story of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for 1,100 miles all by herself. On the Road
Jack Kerouac's classic novel in 1957 is a masterpiece from the Beat Generation, which tells the timeless tale of being young, confused, and just getting on the road to try to figure it all out. The book ensures madness, along with colorful characters and heartbreaking moments.
    The Caliph's House
This book is written by author Tahir Shah, whose experience of vacationing in Morocco of Africa during his childhood growing up led him to move with his family from London to Morocco, where he learned a lot. His writing is rich and fascinating and tells an incredible story of their time of living there.
    The Great Railway Bazaar
Paul Theroux's book narrates his four-month experience in 1973 traveling by train from London to Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, as well as his return trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enriching and improving himself. We were a good 90 minutes into the hike and now were on the backside of Stump Pond at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown. Typically, when hikers reach the backside — of a lake or a mountain or whatever — they experience a measure of relative peace. But this was last August, in the midst of the pandemic of COVID-19, and on that backside in Blydenburgh we crossed paths with a group of hikers coming in the other direction, and then a family of four hanging out just off the trail by the water’s edge, and then a solo hiker, and then a group of boys rushing around on bicycles.
There was a lot of that going around in the year of the coronavirus. Over the past year, we sought out our parks like never before. Long Island's state parks had more than 32 million visitors in 2020, a 5 million-plus jump from 2019, with big increases posted in flagships like Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Sunken Meadow as well as lesser-known places like Napeague, Trailview and Hallock State Park Preserve. The same phenomenon seemed to occur at county, town and village parks, too. Nassau County's Nickerson Beach saw attendance jump from 11,477 in 2019 to 23,586 in 2020 even though the parks were capped at 50% capacity.
However, all that park-love took a toll. There was more littering, more people leaving more pet droppings on trails, more hikers taking more shortcuts off marked trails which leaves channels destroyed and just doesn't look good. There were many reports of people not following masking and distancing guidelines, and of park personnel serving as ambassadors for respect and common sense.
As good as they are, our parks on all levels need more money and personnel to maintain and upgrade them, and more help from us in terms of politeness to our fellow parkgoers.
Anyway, we're still in the outdoors, still seeking peace and recreation. And we might keep coming, even as the malls and movie theaters have reopened their doors.
24.What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A.Hikers found a new form of recreation.
B.The coronavirus might set off going around in the park.
C.Stump Pond is famous all around the world.
D.It's easy to reach the backside of Stump Pond.
25.What does the underlined word “flagships” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The noted parks. B.The best products.
C.Places of interest. D.The most important ship.
26.What bad influence did the park-love bring about?
A.The parks were overcrowded. B.The limited capacity was broken.
C.There were more pets and marked trails. D.Damage has been done to the parks.
27.What’s the purpose of writing this passage?
A.To show the impacts of the coronavirus on parks. B.To encourage people to go hiking in parks.
C.To appeal to people to do their part to protect parks. D.To illustrate current situation of the pandemic.
    C
Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech, which is scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access. That's what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.”
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plant's leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer ,the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, there's no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
28.Why do the scientists use plants to do the experiment?
A.They are common in the daily life. B.They are environmentally responsive.
C.They absorb much carbondioxide gas. D.They are small in size and easy to store.
29.What's the function of the carbon nano-tubes placed into spinach plants?
A.To control the camera. B.To contain the liquid.
C.To fix the tiny sensors. D.To give off plant light.
30.What can we say about the application of the experiment?
    A.It's diverse. B.It's unexpected. C.It's limited. D.It's cheap.
31.What's the suitable title for the text?
A.Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs B.Spinach Is taught to Send Warning Emails
C.Nanotech Helps Spinach Grow Healthily D.Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger
    D
International demand for black rhinoceros horn has seen the animals killed relentlessly for decades in countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. In 1960 there were an estimated 100,000 left, and by 1995 fewer than 2,500 remained. Conservation efforts have brought the number up to around 5,600 today - but the species is still critically endangered, and poaching (偷猎)is among its biggest threats.
Scientists have worked to protect these rare creatures by tracking them with GPS devices strapped to their necks or ankles or implanted in their horns. The resulting data let researchers monitor the rhinos' numbers and when they enter poaching hotspots. But the devices can fail, and drugging the animals to attach them may cause harm.
A recent study describes a new tracking technology that uses smartphones to record rhino footprints. Called the footprint-identification technique (FIT), this system includes software that can analyze the animals’ movements from a distance to help keep them safe from poachers.
The idea came from working with local trackers in Zimbabwe. These footprint-reading experts can identify individual black rhinos from the shape of their feet and, when visible, the impressions left by cracks in the animals’ heel pads (爪垫), which are as distinctive as a human fingerprint. "We probably wouldn't even have looked at the footprints in the first place if we didn't have indigenous trackers," says Sky Alibhai, co-founder of conservation organization WildTrack.
To use the system, scientists gather rhino footprint images with a smartphone application and upload the pictures to a global database. FIT software analysis can then identify the individual animal and determine its age and sex with up to 99 percent accuracy. Researchers can also estimate the number of black rhinos in an area and watch their movements.
“I think this is great for monitoring animals and counting individuals,” says Ciska Scheijen, a conservation scientist. Scheijen wonders about FIT's performance during the rainy season, when footprints are often indistinct, and if it can track larger herds as opposed to the 35 odd individuals this study monitored.
32.What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Homs. B.Rhinos. C.Devices. D.Smartphones.
33.What do we know about FIT?
A.It is a GPS device implanted in rhinos.
B.It has been widely applied in animal protection.
C.It can analyze footprints with a rather high accuracy.
D.It can identify the rhino footprints and human fingerprints.
34.What is Ciska Scheijen's attitude towards FIT?
    A.Positive. B.Uncertain. C.Disapproving. D.Objective.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.Black rhinos are endangered due to poaching.
B.A new app tracks black rhinos through their footprints.
C.Scientists have invented a new tracking technology FIT.
D.Conservation organizations save endangered black rhinos.

    Dear Ricky,
How’s it going? I’ve been busy planned for the Sports Day with my friends, who took place last Friday. Our team was training the final of the 4×400 relay race. The big day came, and I was a bit anxious. So are my friends. I, captain of our team, had to mask our worries while relieving theirs. The meeting started immediate at 8 am. When it was our turn, I was silently prayed and prepared to run. I was the last runner. Jerry, our second lap runner, lowered the stick and missed a few second. Still, believe it or not, I poured all I had into the final lap, but we won! What a exciting day!
    Yours,
    Ryan
