In Los Angeles, a waiter served a group of teens. The waiter remembered his experience as a young high school student. So he wanted to make sure the teens had a pleasant experience at the restaurant. And he made sure of it.
After serving all the teens doing a great job, he was left a tip, only $3.28. That was hardly enough to buy a drink at Starbucks.
The waiter went home. And he felt hatred(厌恶) for the students who did not know the value of hard work. They looked down on people like him. Or so he thought.
After several days, the waiter forgot about it. His life went on as usual. But ten days later, he received a letter from the teens.
“About a week and a half ago, on October 7, my three friends and I came to eat at this restaurant as our own homecoming celebration. It was an exciting experience for us to be here alone, and it was all new to us. And you were the best waiter we could ask for. You were kind, helpful, and didn’t treat us like babies! So I want to say thank you for making our ‘grown-up’ experience so amazing and fun.
“I would also like to say sorry. Since we were new to all of this, our 13-year-old minds didn’t exactly know how to deal with the bill. The bill was reasonable(合乎情理), but we had completely forgotten (and didn’t know, to be honest) what a tip even was, let alone how much to give. So we emptied our pockets, and all our money added up to $3.28.
“Having no idea of how small this really was, we left. Later, we realized our mistake and felt terrible. We knew we had to make it right.
“So together with this letter, you will find the correct 18% tip + extra for simply being amazing. Thank you for your help and patience and also thank you for making our night fun. Thank you!”
( )34. How did the waiter serve the group of teens?
A. He tried to make them pay more. B. He served them like other waiters.

( )36. What made the teens write the letter?
A. The sorry they felt for the waiter. B. The way the waiter served them.
C. The bill the restaurant received. D. The fun they had at the restaurant.

Scientific experts have warned that deadly pandemics(流行病) are likely to keep happening if people don't take actions to protect natural environments.
Future pandemics will happen more often, spread faster and kill more people than COVID﹣19,the experts said. Such events are also expected to cause lasting harm to the world economy(经济).
The warning came in a report from the Intergovernmental Science﹣Policy Platform,an international expert group that advises governments. The group has more than 130 member states.
The experts called for major efforts which are aimed at preventing pandemics instead of trying to contain them after they happen. People around the world need worldwide efforts to stop habitat destruction(生态栖息地破坏)because it can lead viruses to jump from wild animals to humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated (预计) that three out of every four infectious(传染)diseases in people come from animals. Scientists have said COVID﹣19 probably started in bats and began spreading among humans.
In their report, the experts predict that about half of 1.7 million undiscovered viruses in nature might be able to infect people. Activities such as poaching(偷猎)or clearing forests can bring humans and diseases closer together. Deforestation urbanization(城市化)and other land﹣use changes are responsible for about one third of all new diseases that have appeared since 1960,the report says. The $100 billion global wildlife trade is also responsible for the spread of new and existing disease.
Peter Daszak, the reports lead writer, said that even though the experts call for immediate action" This is not a doom and gloom report which is saying the world's going to end and it's too late. "Instead,Daszak said it should be seen as " an optimistic(乐观的) call for action". He noted that the current method for dealing with pandemics is to wait for them to appear and then try to identify(识别)them before they spread. COVID﹣19 has proved the problems with that plan.Officials planned to contain COVID﹣19 after the disease was discovered last year, but it was already too late."" And here we are waiting for a vaccine(疫苗)and drugs to work,Daszak said," it's not a good way. We need to do more. " If we really want to nurse nature, we can't depend on a pandemic to do it for us.
( )37.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pandemics have no influence on the economy.
B. Most of new diseases in people are from animals.
C. More wildlife trades can limit the spread of new diseases.
D. None of the experts expects people to take immediate action.
( )38.The underlined word "contain" in Paragraph 4 means " ".

B. More Money Waste if Pandemics Not Stopped.
C. More Deadly Pandemics if Nature Not Protected.
D. The Future Prediction about Deadly Pandemics.
( )40.What is the writer's purpose in writing this article?
A.To tell people to pay more attention to COVID﹣19.
B.To introduce how the experts finished the report.
C.To stress the importance of preventing COVID﹣19.
D.To call on people to protect natural environments.

Marilla and Anne prepared for tea all Monday and Tuesday. They made a great deal of food. Marilla wanted to give Mr. and Mrs. Allan the best tea of any family in the village.
Wednesday morning came. Anne got up very early because she was too excited to sleep. After breakfast, she made her cake. The cake came out of the oven (烤箱) looking perfect.
The young couple arrived, and they all enjoyed a lovely tea. Everything went well until Anne’s cake was passed around.
“Oh, you must take a piece of this, Mrs. Allan,” said Marilla. “Anne made it just for you.”
“In that case I must try it,” laughed Mrs. Allan. She took a mouthful and a strange look came onto her face.
Marilla tried hers and said, “Anne! What is in this cake?”
“Oh, isn’t it all right?” cried Anne.
“It’s terrible. What flavoring (调味品) did you use?”
“Vanilla (香草),” said Anne.
“Go and bring me the bottle of vanilla you used.”
Anne returned with a small bottle labeled “Vanilla”. Marilla took it and smelled it.
“Anne, you’ve flavored that cake with medicine! I broke a bottle of medicine last week and poured the rest of it in this old vanilla bottle. Couldn’t you smell it?”
Anne burst into tears (眼泪) and ran to her room. Lying on her bed, she heard somebody come in.

“My dear little girl, don’t cry,” said a happy voice.

“But I wanted to make a nice cake for you.”
“Thank you, dear. But now, will you show me your flower garden? I love flowers.”
Anne showed Mrs. Allan her flower garden and soon felt much better. No more was said about the cake.

Do you know a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you will get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind boxes are quite popular. Merchants(商家)fill the box with random(随机的)toys. They usually come from movies, comics and cartoons. Many people are eager to buy them to find out what will be inside.
The earliest blind boxes originated in Japan, it was a New Year’s tradition. At that time, they called it “a lucky bag”. Blind boxes were introduced to China in 2014. According to a 2019 T-mall(天猫)report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box, designed by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, was sold 55,000 in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.
According to The Paper, blind box toys are popular in part because of their cute appearances. The cute miniature-sized cartoon figurines are suitable to place almost anywhere. What’s more, even if blind box toys are not their top choice for decorations, the mystery and uncertainty of the process also attracts people. It’s the main reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.
“Fear of the unknown is always a part of the box-opening process,” said Miss Cao, 24, who lives and works in Shenyang. Speaking to Sina News, she said: “Until you open all the boxes, you cannot know what it is inside.”
Opening a blind box is a pleasant little surprise for our daily lives, something small but fun to wait for each day, week or month. When people open this simple little box, they may be disappointed, but the uncertainty is part of the fun. People will open more blind boxes and hope for a better outcome.
