A
In college, I wrote an essay about Christmas Eve to catch the spirit of this special night for my family. I got an A, and even better was this comment from my professor, “I believe you have found a direction for future job.”
My essay described our traditions: turkey, church, two presents. A lot of it was about my Aunt Bud, the head of my mom’s family. We were lucky we lived closest, so she spent holidays at our house. Sadly, she’s gone now. Like so many wonderful spirits, she died too young, just after she retired with big plans for an easy life. But she’s not really gone. She visits us all often, in the form of a cardinal—her favorite bird.
One June day, I called my mom. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Sitting here looking at the tree,” she said, referring to the tree in the middle of our yard. It was about a foot tall when my dad planted it today it towers over the roof. “There are cardinals all over it,” Mom said. “I’ve never seen so many.” I wasn’t surprised. “Mom, you know what day it is, right?” I said. “It’s Aunt Bud’s birthday.” So of course, she had come to visit—with friends.
In this issue of our Reader’s Digest, we’ve collected inspiring stories about unusual events that happened around the holidays. This year we focus on people who showed a kindness that made a forever difference in someone’s life. “Angels in action,” we call them. I hope your angels visit you this holiday season. Please write to me at letters@rd.com and share your stories with us.

Scientists are studying whether a drug known as talazoparib could offer a new treatment to people with secondary breast cancer(SBC)that has spread to the brain, where it becomes incurable.
The new experiment, supported by the charity Breast Cancer Now, will see researchers study whether talazoparib could help those with secondary breast cancer by preventing cancer cells from restituting, forcing them to die.
“Our previous research has shown that, in many cases, secondary breast cancer tumors(肿瘤)in the brain have changes in the way they repair their DNA. So next we will experiment to see whether the tumors can be easily hurt by drugs like talazoparib,” said Professor Leonie Young. Experts will use tumors and breast cancer cells donated by patients to see whether talazoparib is effective in treating secondary breast cancer in the brain. Further tests will examine the drug in mice, as well as models that imitate the brain’s protective system.
Natalie Woodford who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer welcomed the launch of the research. “It’s really encouraging to learn about the new secondary breast cancer research happening,” she said. “I hope that this study will be a success and lead to new treatments for women like me in the future.”
Dr Simon Vincent, director of the research, added, “About 35,000 people in the UK are living with incurable secondary breast cancer as well as the fear and uncertainty around, because this deadly disease will cut their lives short. New Zealand has announced it will ban (禁止) smoking for the next generation, so that those who are aged 14 and under today will never be legally (合法) able to buy tobacco.
“The new law means the legal smoking age will increase every year to create a smoke-free generation of New Zealanders,” associate health minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said on Thursday.
The government announced the rising age alongside other measures to make smoking unaffordable and difficult to reach, trying to realize its goal of making the country entirely smoke-free with in the next four years. Other measures include reducing the legal amount of nicotine in tobacco products to very low levels, cutting down the shops where cigarettes could legally be sold, and providing services for smokers to give up smoking. The new law will not limit vape (电子烟) sales.
“We want to make sure young people never start smoking so we will make it illegal to sell or supply smoked tobacco products to teenagers. People aged 14 when the law comes into effect will never be able to legally buy tobacco,” Verrall said.
New Zealand’s daily smoking rates have been dropping over time—down to 11.6% in 2018, from 18% a decade earlier. But smoking rates for Maori and Pacifika were far higher—29% for Maori and 18% for Pasifika. “If nothing changes, it would be decades till Maori smoking rates fall below 5%,” Verrall said. She said banning smoking in the next four years was within reach: “I believe it is. The issue is, though, if we don’t change what we’re doing, we won’t make it for Maori—and that’s what the law is really focused on”.
9. All of the following are measures to cut down on smoking in New Zealand EXCEPT ________.
A Raising the cost of cigarettes. B. Preventing the sale of vapes.
C Helping people give up smoking D. Reducing tobacco-selling shops.
10. Which might be New Zealand’s daily smoking rate in 2008?
A. 5%. B. 11.6%. C. 18%. D. 29%.
11. What is the real focus of the law according to Verrall?
A. Cutting smoking rates to 5% in New Zealand.
B. Helping to lower the smoking rates for Maori faster.
C. Making it illegal for teenagers to buy tobacco products.
D. Banning teenage smoking completely in the next four years.
12. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Satisfying results of the new law in New Zealand. B. People’s responses to the new law in New Zealand.
C. New Zealand’s ban on smoking for next generation. D. New Zealand’s serious situation of teenage smoking.

Humphrey and his wife Hildy had ten white sheep, eight black-faced sheep, and five long-legged lambs. Early every autumn, they would drive their sheep onto the ground beside the big, yellow barn(畜棚). Then Humphrey would hold each sheep still while Hildy cut off the wool.
When they finished, there were twenty-three soft piles of wool on the floor, and twenty-three pink, skinny sheep jumping around happily as they were freed into the field. Humphrey and Hildy collected piles of wool and put them in the house.
The next few weeks were very busy. They finally finished on cold, fall evening. Twenty-three bright, woolly blankets lay in cheerful piles around the kitchen. They would sell the warm blankets when winter came. By the time the snow flew, the sheep’s wool would have grown long enough to keep them nice and warm. Humphrey and Hildy both smiled, content with a job well done, and went to bed early.
The alarm clock went off at 5: 00 a.m. Humphrey and Hildy listened to the local weather report. “The earliest cold air in history,” The announcer said, “has brought a freeze(霜冻)to our area! So put warm coverings, folks!” They stared at each other in horror.
“The sheep!” shouted Humphrey. They hurried to put on their clothes and raced outside. What a freeze it was! The golden autumn grass fell to the ground, and the sheep without wool were shaking with cold painfully. Their pink skins had turned blue.

Winter Fun Games
Last Friday, our school succeeded in holding winter fun games, in which over 200 students and teachers participated.
The participants were in high spirits and took an active part in the games, such as tug of war, fancy rope skipping, shuttlecock kicking and running with the ball. The most impressive activity, where five people paced just in one step, demonstrated strength and cooperation.
The games were highly spoken of because they helped to relieve stress and build strong team spirit.
59. One possible version:
“What will we do?” Hildy cried. “The barn can’t hold so many sheep.” They had to drive twelve of them into the barn, and five in the garage. As for the other six, there was no other choice but to drive them into the kitchen. The next morning, wakened up by Humphrey’s angry cries, Hildy rushed to the kitchen. What a mess! A lamb was lying beside the fireplace, chewing a corner of Humphrey’s newspaper, and another black-faced sheep had just knocked down the plates and bowls from the breakfast table.
Outside the messy kitchen, Hildy had a good idea, eyes falling on the blankets. “If we give them back their wool, they can go outside.” Humphrey followed her gaze, “Hildy, how could we keep those blankets on the sheep? They’d fall off in the strong wind!” Hildy tapped her chin thoughtfully: “Maybe we can.” Grabbing a blanket from the nearest pile, she began unraveling the blankets and then was busy knitting for their sheep.(OR: She began to sew buttons onto one side of the blankets and buttonholes made of strings on the other.)Finally, twenty-three warm “wool sweaters” were on their sheep, protecting them from the cold as they played outside.
