The popularity of Chinese-owned video-sharing service TikTok(抖音)continues to grow among young people in the United States. In 2019, experts say the service more than doubled its American user base to 37 million. TikTok is especially popular with teens and young adults.
The service lets users create and share their short videos that they think interesting and useful. Many of them are under 15 seconds. The TikTok app offers a wide choice of sounds, brief parts of songs and special effects tools to help create a video. Some TikTok-based memes(表情包)are very popular. Videos often include popular songs from well-known artists and TikTok has even helped launch the careers of new music stars.

Gen Z is a name used to call the generation born between the late 1990s and the early 2000s.“That's where they're all hanging out," Marchisotto said.

21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes — a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.
Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn’t say ‘not a chance I would do that,’ but it was more a fact of why not do it?” she said.
Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550-pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.
She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”
Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.
On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.
    8. What made Harrison participate in the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge?
    A. Her childhood hobby and dream. B. Her experience of watching a race.
    C. Her swimming teaching experience. D. Her family members’ encouragement.
    9. Which of the following best describes Harrison’s ocean trip?
    A. Adventurous. B. Pleasant.
    C. Boring. D. Expensive.
    10. When did Harrison begin rowing across the Atlantic Ocean alone?
    A. In November. B. In December.
    C. In January. D. In February.
    11. What can we learn from Harrison’s story?
    A. The early bird catches the worm.
    B. Difficulties strengthen the mind.
    C. Behind bad luck comes good luck.
    D. No way is impossible to courage.
B 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据文章第一段“21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes(21岁的贾斯敏·哈里森以70天3小时48分钟的时间完成了2020年塔利斯克威士忌大西洋挑战赛)”和最后一段“On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey.(2021年2月20日,她到达了安提瓜岛——旅程的终点)”可知,她可能是在2020年的12月份开始出发的。故选B。

A city in South Korea, which has the world’s largest number of people using smartphones, has placed flashing lights and laser beams at a road crossing to warn “smartphone zombies” to look up and drivers to slow down, in the hope of preventing accidents.
The designers of the system were motivated by growing worry that more pedestrians glued to their phones will become victims in a country that already has some of the highest road death and injury rates among developed countries. State-run Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) believes its system of flashing lights at zebra crossings can warn both pedestrians and drivers.
In addition to red, yellow and blue LED lights on the pavement, “smombies” - smartphone zombies - will be warned by laser beam projected from power poles and a warning sent to the phones by an app that they are about to step into traffic.
“Increasing number of smombie accidents have occurred in pedestrian crossings, so these zombie lights are essential to prevent these pedestrian accidents,” said KICT senior researcher Kim Jong-hoon. Drivers are warned by the flashing lights, which have shown to be effective 83.4 percent of the time in the institute’s tests involving about 1,000 vehicles.
In 2017, more than 1,600 pedestrians were killed in auto related accidents, which is about 40 percent of total traffic deaths, according to data from the Traffic Accident Analysis System. For now, the smombie warning system is placed only in Ilsan, a suburban city about 30 km northwest of the capital, Seoul, but is expected to go nationwide, according to the institute.
Kim Dan-hee, a 23-year-old resident of Ilsan, welcomed the system, saying she was often too absorbed in her phone to remember to look at traffic. “This flashing light makes me feel safe as it makes me look around again, and I hope that we can have more of these in town,” she said.
12 What do the underlined words “smartphone zombies” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. Pedestrians buried in their phones. B. Drivers driving after drunk.
    C. Passengers crazy about phones. D. Policemen in charge of traffic.
    13. What do we know about the warning system?
    A. It has reduced death rate by 83.4%. B. It has been spread nationwide.
    C. It gives a warning to the smartphones. D. It is being tried out in many places.
    14. What was the residents’ attitude to the traffic system?
    A. Negative. B. Unconcerned.
    C. Disapproving. D. Favorable.
    15. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Flashing Lights Are Used to Prevent Accidents
    B. Smartphone Zombies Are Causing Traffic Accidents
    C. South Korea Warns Smartphone Zombies of Traffic
    D. South Korea Warns Drivers to Look Up
A 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据空前“A city in South Korea, which has the world’s largest number of people using smartphones, has placed flashing lights and laser beams at a road crossing to warn(拥有全球最多智能手机用户的韩国某城市近日在十字路口设置了闪光灯和激光束,警告)”以及空后的“to look up and drivers to slow down, in the hope of preventing accidents.(抬头看路,提醒司机减速,以避免发生交通事故。)”可知,该词指的应该是沉迷于手机的某类人;再根据第二段“State-run Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) believes its system of flashing lights at zebra crossings can warn both pedestrians and drivers. (国营的韩国土木工程和建筑技术研究院(KICT)认为,他们在斑马线上的闪光系统可以警告行人和司机。)”可知,这类人指的是行人,也就是沉迷于手机的行人。故选A。
根据第三段“In addition to red, yellow and blue LED lights on the pavement, “smombies” - smartphone zombies - will be warned by laser beam projected from power poles and a warning sent to the phones by an app that they are about to step into traffic.(除了人行道上的红、黄、蓝三色LED灯,“smombies”还会受到电线杆投射的激光束的警告,以及一款应用程序发送到手机上的警告,提醒他们即将进入车流。)”
根据最后一段“Kim Dan-hee, a 23-year-old resident of Ilsan, welcomed the system, saying she was often too absorbed in her phone to remember to look at traffic. “This flashing light makes me feel safe as it makes me look around again, and I hope that we can have more of these in town,” she said.( 23岁的Ilsan居民Kim Dan-hee对这个系统表示欢迎,她说自己经常太专注于手机,忘了看路况。她说:“这种闪光灯让我感到安全,因为它让我再次环顾四周,我希望城里能有更多这样的灯。”)”可知,她对于这一系统表示欢迎。选项A“Negative (消极的)”;选项B“Unconcerned (漠不关心的)”;选项C“Disapproving (不赞同的)”;选项D“Favorable (赞成的)”。故选D。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“A city in South Korea, which has the world’s largest number of people using smartphones, has placed flashing lights and laser beams at a road crossing to warn “smartphone zombies” to look up and drivers to slow down, in the hope of preventing accidents.

There are many theories that suggest different ways of improving memory or thinking more clearly. One of those is the idea that adding rosemary (迷迭香) to your food or water, or even breathing in its fragrance, can give your brain a boost.
First, it’s important to understand what rosemary is. ____16____ It’s a perennial, meaning that once you plant it, it should re-grow every year when the weather is warm enough for it to do so. It’s native to Asia and the Mediterranean. ____17____
Rosemary is related to the mint (薄荷) family of plants. When it blooms, its flowers are white, purple, pink or deep blue. It is often used as a flavor in food, including soups, meat, fish and other Mediterranean food. And it has a somewhat bitter flavor. Some people also enjoy tea flavored with rosemary. ____18____
One study that involved 28 older adults found that consumption of a small amount of dried rosemary powder was associated with statistically significantly improved memory speed. ____19____ Researchers found that their memory of images and numbers improved when the essential oil of rosemary was sprayed in the room.
____20____ But one theory is that rosemary appears to have some antioxidant (抗氧剂) properties that may offer some healing for the damage in our bodies. Another idea is that rosemary appears to lower anxiety, which in turn, may increase the ability to concentrate.
While rosemary shows some promise for boosting our brain power, it’s important to check with your doctor before you begin having it.
    A. But it is grown in the United States, as well.

空格处上文“It’s native to Asia and the Mediterranean.(它原本生长在亚洲和地中海地区)”是讲述迷迭香的产地,A项“但它也生长在美国”也是讲述迷迭香的产地,且表述与上文之间形成转折,且A项中的“is grown in”与上文中的“is native to”形成对比,故选A项。
根据上文“It is often used as a flavor in food, including soups, meat, fish and other Mediterranean food. And it has a somewhat bitter flavor. Some people also enjoy tea flavored with rosemary.(它经常被用作食物的调味剂,包括汤、肉、鱼和其他地中海食物。它有一些苦的味道。有些人还喜欢迷迭香茶)”可知,此处主要介绍了迷迭香在我们日常生活中的用途。F项“迷迭香也被用作香水和添加到洗发水和肥皂”符合语境,F项中的“Rosemary is also used as...”与上文关键词“It is often used as…”
根据上文“One study that involved 28 older adults found that consumption of a small amount of dried rosemary powder was associated with statistically significantly improved memory speed.(一项涉及28名老年人的研究发现,食用少量迷迭香粉能显著提高记忆速度)”可知,本段向我们说明,研究表明迷迭香可以帮助改善人的记忆力。
根据下文“But one theory is that rosemary appears to have some antioxidant (抗氧剂) properties that may offer some healing for the damage in our bodies.(但有一种理论认为迷迭香似乎有一些抗氧化特性,可以为我们身体的损伤提供一些治疗)”可知,此处是讲述迷迭香对人体的益处,空处与下文是转折关系,E项“目前还不清楚迷迭香为什么会有好处”符合语境,与下文之间形成转折关系,且E项中的“there may be a benefit from rosemary”与下文说明的迷迭香对人体的益处相呼应。故选E项。
