One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.
I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.
Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.
“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.
4. Why did the author stop the car?
A. To help the turtle. B. To see the thing clearly.
C. To prevent a car accident. D. To find something good.
5. What happened to the turtle?
A. It got hurt by people previously. B. It lost its direction.
C. It was run over by a car. D. It was injured a little bit by the author.
6. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?
A. Leaving the turtles alone. B. Making Ontario home to turtles.
C. Changing the road conditions. D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.
7. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. The director. B. The turtle.
C. The author. D. The driver.
A 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据第一段的“A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety.”(几秒钟后,我意识到自己看到的是一只大海龟。
根据第二段的“I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake.”(我听说,捡起乌龟而不伤到它的最好方法是抓住它的尾巴,这样就不会被咬伤。
根据第四段的“Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life.”(海龟知道它们想去哪里。
Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation”(Sue博士告诉我,该组织处理海龟保护的许多方面)和最后一段的“Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine.”(一旦受伤的海龟到达该中心,就会有包括X光机在内的医疗设施准备就绪。)
C
It would not be an overstatement to say that salt is one of the greatest discoveries in the history of mankind. Just imagine how tasteless our food would have been had salt not been discovered. Apart, from adding flavor to our food, it is also an essential ingredient for the health of both man as well as animals, provided it is taken in the right quantities. Salt is also used by the food processing and meat packing industries as a seasoning or preservative ingredient.
Salt has always been helpful in the building of communities and societies, as man normally built his settlements around the sources of salt. At one point of time, salt was also used as a currency. Today, there are many countries around the world that are working hard to extract (提炼) salt so that we can enjoy our food to the fullest. Some of these are producing enough salt to satisfy the requirement of the entire world, while others are producing just enough to support their own people.
According to the British Geological Survey, China is the top salt producer in the world. The United States of America occupies the second position, and India, finishing a distant third. Other countries that, made it among the top ten salt producing nations’ list were Canada, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Chile, France and the Netherlands.
Countries that produced more than 1 million tonnes of salt in 2017 included Peru, Bangladesh, Thailand, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Romania, Egypt, Poland, and the United Kingdom, to name a few. Ranked at the bottom of the list were the African nations of Mauritania and Djibouti.
So, the next time you take your meal and add a pinch of salt to make it more delicious, do share a thought for the numerous salt workers around the world due to whom our food tastes so perfect.
8. What do we know from the first paragraph?
A. Man will die without salt. B. The more salt, the better food.
C. Salt intake should be proper. D. Salt is an optional ingredient.
9. What does the underlined word “these” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Countries. B. Settlements.
C. Sources. D. Communities.
10. Where does Mexico rank in salt production in the world?
A. Fifth. B. Sixth. C. Seventh. D. Eighth.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward those who produce salt?
A. Regretful. B. Grateful. C. Doubtful. D. Faithful.
C 9. A 10. C 11. B

Computers have become amazingly exact at translating spoken words to text messages and searching a large supply of valuable information for answers to difficult questions. At least, that is, so long as you speak English or other world's main languages. But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.
American tech giants don't have a long history of making their language technology work well outside the wealthiest markets, a problem that has also made it harder for them to discover dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the Al systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.
“We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed,” said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his Al research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. “Considering our history, some of the bias (偏见) is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized (殖民化的) countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way,” Marivate added.
However, Google and Microsoft are among the companies that say they are trying to improve technology for so-called "low-resource" languages that Al systems don't have enough data for. Computer scientists at Meta announced a breakthrough on the path to a "universal translator" that could translate multiple languages at once and work better with lower-resourced languages. Meanwhile, Marivate and other researchers have founded a research project across Africa. Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.
12. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Yoruba and Igbo are widely spoken in the world.
B. English speakers fail to access online information.
C. The online data of African languages is limited.
D. Computers can translate all text messages exactly.
13. Why does the author mention “Google” in Paragraph 2?
A To make a prediction. B. To draw a comparison.
C. To reach a conclusion. D. To give an example.
14. What is Marivate's attitude towards “American tech giants”?
A. Friendly. B. Unconcerned. C. Dissatisfied. D. Proud.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Joint Efforts to Improve AI in African Languages B. Computers Good at Translating Spoken Language
C. US Tech Giants Misunderstand African Languages D. African Researchers Exchange Ideas with Tech Giants
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据文章第一段“But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.(但试着用约鲁巴语、伊博语或任何广泛使用的非洲语言与手机通话,你会发现难以获取信息、贸易和全球科技经济带来的其他好处。)”和第二段“Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the Al systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.(部分原因是,人工智能系统没有足够的在线数据来有效地学习如何更好地理解这些语言。)”
根据文章第二段“Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. (例如,谷歌的语言应用程序把一个善良的非洲神误译为魔鬼,这让约鲁巴社区的成员感到不安。)”可推断,作者在第二段提到“谷歌”是给出一个具体的例子。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“"We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed," said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his AI research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. "Considering our history, some of the bias is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way," Marivate added. (“如果一台机器不懂你的语言,它就会像从未存在过一样,” Vukosi Marivate说。他将自己的一些人工智能研究投入到了非洲南部的希特松加语和塞茨瓦纳语上。“考虑到我们的历史,有些偏见是故意的。非洲大陆和其他殖民地国家的历史表明,当语言必须被翻译时,翻译的方式非常狭隘。”)”可推断,Marivate对“美国科技巨头”的态度是不满意的。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.(但试着用约鲁巴语、伊博语或任何广泛使用的非洲语言与手机通话,你会发现难以获取信息、贸易和全球科技经济带来的其他好处。)根据最后一段“Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.”(人们越来越多地联合起来开发各种语言方法。)所以“Joint Efforts to Improve Al in African Languages(共同努力提高非洲语言的人工智能)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。
Ask most people which day of the week they fear the most and the answer is likely to be Monday. The first day of the working week can make us depressed. ____16____
The most depressing day of the year is the third Monday in January, when it’s cold and dark outside. This day was named “Blue Monday” by psychologist Cliff Arnall. Even if there was little science behind Blue Monday, it’s probably true that the sound of our alarm clock on any Monday morning means the coming of a new working week and possibly the end of our weekend of fun. ____17____ It’s what psychologists call an emotional shift, and no other part of the week has a transition(过渡) like it.
Apparently, Monday means the end of weekend lie-ins. ____18____ According to a website, “If you can’t stand your job, then the Monday blues can be very real.” And it can be especially difficult to start another seemingly endless workweek. Your case of the Mondays can have a negative impact on your performance, productivity and the people around you.
____19____ Feeling a bit low shouldn’t be confused with more serious depression, caused by other factors. Claudia Hammond, an author and presenter, argues that this low feeling might be untrue. ____20____ She mentions an Australian study of how people reflected on their mood and found the day that scored the lowest was in fact Wednesdays. So, when Monday comes, maybe we should give it a second chance!
A. But is Monday as bad as we like to think it is?
B. What exactly makes us feel down remains unknown.
C. Weekends are definitely happy days in all countries.
D. That’s why the feeling is described as the Monday blues.
E. There is a strong cultural idea that we don’t like Mondays.
F. Our Monday mood can be based on a direct comparison to the day before.
G. It’s back to the routine and the realization that there are five days of working ahead.
D 17. F 18. G 19. A 20. E
下文“It’s what psychologists call an emotional shift, and no other part of the week has a transition (过渡) like it.(这就是心理学家所说的情绪转变,一周中没有其他时间有这样的转变)”提到情绪转变,所以空处应是提及星期一和前一天的情绪,F项“我们星期一的心情可以建立在与前一天的直接比较之上”符合语境。
根据下文“Feeling a bit low shouldn’t be confused with more serious depression, caused by other factors. Claudia Hammond, an author and presenter, argues that this low feeling might be untrue.(感觉有点低落不应该与更严重的抑郁症相混淆,后者是由其他因素引起的。作家兼主持人Claudia Hammond认为,这种低沉的感觉可能是不真实的)”可知,情绪低落不等同于抑郁,这种感觉可能是不真实的,所以星期一忧郁症不像我们想象的那样糟糕,A项“但是,星期一真的像我们想象的那么糟糕吗?”符合语境。故选A。
根据下文“She mentions an Australian study of how people reflected on their mood and found the day that scored the lowest was in fact Wednesdays. So, when Monday comes, maybe we should give it a second chance!(她提到了一项关于人们如何反思自己情绪的澳大利亚研究,发现得分最低的日子实际上是星期三。所以,当星期一到来的时候,也许我们应该再给它一次机会)”可知,一项研究发现人们情绪最低落的时间是星期三,所以我们应该再给星期一一次机会,由此可推知,空处应是提及人们不喜欢星期一,所以下文才说再给星期一一次机会,E项“有一种强烈的文化观念认为我们不喜欢星期一”符合语境,故选E。

At present, COVID-19 spreads rapidly and has aroused widespread concern. Therefore, there are also many fake news, which are shared and spread through smart phones and the Internet.
The reason is all about personal interests. Most journalists create misleading news in order to draw public attention to make themselves more popular or to make profits. Moreover, some people don’t know it is illegal to spread unconfirmed news.
With regard to this phenomenon, we should use our brains more and not believe the information shared by others without thinking. We should insist on not spreading or believing rumors. Besides, the authorities should strengthen the supervision of the news media so as to reduce the spread of misinformation. For the COVID-19, we should stick to scientific prevention and control, and stick to the principle “people first, life first”. I believe we will be able to defeat the virus.

One Saturday morning, I got a call from my aunt. She told me that she had to go with my uncle on a business trip for the day, and she wondered if I could look after my little 6-year-old cousin, Max. I knew that for them, leaving their dearest son for a day was the last thing in the whole world they would do, because they were what is known as “helicopter parents”, who keep watching everything their kids do. As a high school student, I knew exactly that children who were brought up by helicopter parents could end up having many problems and I hoped I could do something to improve the situation, so I accepted her request. Actually, I was honored to be trusted by such parents.
When I arrived there, my aunt and uncle were just ready to go out. The last thing my aunt said to me before they left was “Don’t let him hurt himself while we are away.” She repeated it several times until she thought I took it seriously. After they left, I tried to teach Max to play some games that might be against my aunt’s will, but failed. Max seemed not to be interested, and even frightened. I didn’t want to push him, so I decided to slow it down.
Around lunch time, Max asked me what was for lunch. I said, “I don’t know, what do you want?” He said, “Can you cook scrambled eggs?” I replied, “Of course I can!” “Well,” said Max, “I want some.” I asked him if he could cook. He looked at me in amazement, and said, “Of course not. Mom won’t allow me to approach the kitchen. She thinks I’ll be burnt if I try to do that, but I think it would be amazing to cook what I like on my own.”
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, I had an idea.

Paragraph 2:
When my aunt and uncle returned, they saw Max cooking a dinner in the kitchen.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
Suddenly, I had an idea. Why not let him start with cooking? I was quite good at cooking, so I thought this might be a good opportunity to teach Max a new skill. I told him my idea. Max jumped up and down when he heard that. Due to his height, I pulled up a chair and he stood on it. With my instructions and encouragement, he did well and became confident. Though we made the kitchen messy, we were satisfied with our work. We thought supper would be better.
When my aunt and uncle returned they saw Max cooking a dinner in the kitchen. As I expected, she was shocked. At first, she was worried, fearing her son would fall off the chair or touch something hot. But seeing how well Max was cooking the meal, she was no longer worried. The moment Max saw her he stopped and shouted happily, “Mom, I can cook now.” My aunt felt really proud. “Thank you. I never let Max do anything he really wanted to because I feared he would get hurt. Now I should let him just go for it.”
