Adults praise children for outperforming others. Sports tournaments award those who surpass others. The practice of making social comparisons is so common in daily life that the negative effects caused by social comparisons are usually ignored. One well-known strategy to get rid of social comparisons is to provide children with participation awards, which means children get the same prize despite their performance. Such awards, however, may not abolish social comparisons. High-performing children may feel unjustly treated and look down on the latter group. More generally those who receive unwarranted(无正当理由的) rewards may come to believe they deserve to receive the recognition. How, then, can we make children feel proud of themselves and motivate them without the unwanted side effects? A better approach is to use temporal comparisons-encouraging children to compare themselves with their past self rather than with others.Researchers recently conducted a study, where 583 children were asked to do a reading-and-writing exercise designed to influence the kind of comparisons they would make: social comparisons or temporal comparisons. Results showed children who compared themselves with others said they wanted to be superior to such people, while those who compared themselves with their past self said they wanted to improve rather than be superior. Temporal comparisons changed children’s goals away from a desire for superiority and toward self-improvement.What, then, can parents and teachers do with this knowledge? Parents and teachers can praise children’s improvement over time to let them know they are making progress. Also, teachers can create learning contexts that track children’s own progress over time, such as report cards that display their changes in learning and performance.Of course, temporal comparisons are not a panacea; we should never push children too much to improve themselves. The road toward self-improvement is paved with struggles and setbacks. Rather than making children feel bad for those failures, we should encourage them to learn from their imperfect past self-and thus help youngsters become better than before.24What can we know about the strategy mentioned in paragraph 2?AIt is in high-performing children’s favor.   BIt stresses the importance of teamwork.CIt may make all the children more confident.  DIt may discourage high-performing children.25What does the research finding suggest?AChildren have a desire to feel proud of themselves.BTemporal comparisons make for self-improvement.CChildren need to be exposed to various comparisons.DSocial comparisons give children a sense of superiority.26What does the underlined “panacea” most probably mean?ACure-all. BRoutine. CPriority.  DBenefit.27Which of the following may the author agree with?AFailure can be avoided by equality.   BComparisons will lead to failure.CFailure is an opportunity to learn.  DComparisons are difficult to abolish.C  Antioxidants (抗氧化剂) are found naturally inn plants like blueberries, blackberries, and red cabbage. Scientists believe antioxidants may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of antioxidants in them.    British scientist Cathie Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of antioxidants by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.    A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO, or “genetically modified organism”. For hundreds of years, farmers have created new kinds of plants by mixing existing plants together using natural methods. GMO plants are different because the plants’ DNA has been changed by scientists. Scientists who do this usually think they’re improving the plants in some way.    After working on developing purple tomatoes for years, Dr. Martin’s experiment worked. Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes. Though the color is unusual, what’s really special about the tomatoes is that they have very high levels of antioxidants. Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes. Soon, Dr. Martin and other scientists created a company to promote the tomatoes.    The company tested its tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice who were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than the mice who were fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like.    And GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t “natural”. There are still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment and other plants, but most scientists agree that food from GMO crops is safe to eat.     On September 7, the government approved a GMO plant designed to target human health. Dr. Martin and her company plan to introduce the tomatoes at farmers’ markets across the US in 2023. They also hope to sell the seeds to people who want to grow their own.28What is the function of paragraph 1?A. To define a concept. B. To bring in the topic of the text.C. To add background information.     D. To introduce the benefits of antioxidants.29What makes purple tomatoes really special?A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.C. Their proper size.  D. Their pleasant color.30Why are GMO foods refused by people?A. They are expensive to buy. B. They are intended for animals.C. They are thought to be harmful. D. Their appearance isn’t appealing.31What is the government’s attitude towards GMO crops?A. Opposed. B. Unclear. C .Positive.  D. Concerned.DHow might architecture aid in solving the housing crisis and help build a more sustainable future? In 2019, 3D printing company WASP and Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) revealed their concept to design the first 3D printed house made entirely from clay. Today, the joint project, known as TECLA, is finally complete and on display near Bologna, Italy.Over the past few years, a number of 3D printed homes and communities have been conceptualized. While previous structures were made from concrete or plastic, TECLA was built from soil found at the site mixed with water, fibers from rice husks () and a binder (粘合剂), the last of which is less than 5% of the total volume. Printing with clay does have its weaknesses. It’s a much slower process than quick-drying concrete — the design can be printed in 200 hours but the clay mixture can take weeks to dry, depending on climate, and it also has height limitations.Building homes from earth, Cucinella pointed out, is not new. “The challenge was really using an old material in the history of architecture with new technology to find a new shape of a house,” Cucinella said. To that end, the Crane WASP printers mixed water with the local earth, and then printed the 60-square-meter TECLA model layer by layer. The design features two circular spaces joined together with skylights, inviting full natural light inside. The residence includes a living area, a bedroom and bathroom. Its furniture, including tables and chairs, can also be printed using WASP’s machinery, while components like doors and windows were fixed post-printing.The idea behind TECLA isn’t necessarily to copy the same home for any environment, but to adjust the design based on the location. “We are not producing one type of house that you can print and use everywhere, because it’s different if you design a house in the north of Italy, or in the middle of Africa,” Cucinella explained. “The house responds to different climates.” Additionally, the building process can be easily taught and widely used.32What is the disadvantage of printing with clay?A3D printers are costly.    BClay is not strong enough.CIt’s not easy to mix rice husks with clay. DIt takes a long time to dry the mixture.33Which of the following best describes TECLA?AIt is air-conditioned.   BIt is the first 3D printed house.CIt is fully equipped.   DIt adopts a solar heating system.34What is the significance of TECLA?AIt adapts to different climates.   BIt limits the height of buildings.CIt uses few binders in printing.   DIt can be moved without effort.35What is the best title for the text?AThe challenges for 3D printing  BIs this 3D printed home the future of housing?CThe ways to renew 3D printing machinery  DCan we simplify the instructions on 3D printing?二、七选五How to be funnyHumor can help you connect with other people and make unpleasant situations a little more bearable. Being funny might seem like it takes a lot of work, but it’s actually not that hard once you tap into your inner sense of humor. ____36____Learn a little about what makes you laugh. Laughter itself is unconscious. While it’s possible for us to keep ourselves from laughing, it is very hard for us to produce laughter on demand, and doing so will usually seem “forced”. Fortunately, laughter is very contagious. ____37____Learn to laugh in boring or unfunny circumstances. It’s good to know that the less funny a place is, the easier it becomes to add the element of humorous surprise. ____38___ This is why The Office, the originally a BBC 2 show that was remade by NBC, uses an office as its setting: it’s about as boring as it gets. We’re not used to looking at an office as a funny place, so when it is funny, it’s especially funny.____39____ Being funny doesn’t come in a “one-size-fits-all” package. What makes you funny is unique to you and the way you observe the world. Trust that you do have a funny bone. ____40____ And all children express humor naturally from kindergarten age, using humor to entertain themselves and others. It’s already in you-you just need to bring it out!ATrust in your inner sense of humor.BAs babies we laugh from four months of age.CMaybe you don’t think you’re naturally funny.DStudies have shown that humor makes us laugh the most.EThere are things you can do to make yourself and other people laugh.FIn a social context, it’s easy to start laughing when others are laughing.GIt might be easier to get people to laugh in an office workplace than in a comedy club.第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30)第一节(15小题;每小题1,满分15)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。    I’m someone who never went to university but always thought about it. He bent down and asked the little girl, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know from Daddy that a miracle can save him. Therefore, I want to use my money to buy it.” “Well, take me to where you live and I’d like to see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”Paragraph 2:That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. After examining the sick boy lying in bed, he turned to the little girl and said with a gentle smile, “I happen to have the miracle that you need.” He completed the operation on Andrew without charge and saved him. Luckily, it wasn’t long before he recovered. The whole family were so delighted that they determined to extend their gratitude to the surgeon. To the parents’ surprise, the surgeon told them that it was the little girl that created a miracle. What touched him was the faith of the little girl.
