Ask people in the UK what the words “Sunday roast” mean to them, and they’ll probably take
you back to their grandmothers’ dining rooms — maybe with a few stories of “the greatest puddings” and “the best ever steak”. But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the DailyMail, just one in 50 British families sits down to this weekly meal together.
There are many reasons why the roast is becoming less popular. In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook. Nowadays,
people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven up.
However, a recent article from The Telegraph warned against being carried away by our tight
schedules: “It would be a shame to let this fine old tradition disappear.”
The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it. The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share good food and chat with family and friends. “For busy moms and dads, even if you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and the TV only once a week and turn the Sunday roast into a real family event, children can have fun cooking the food and clearing up together.” 48.Why do people pay less attention to Sunday roast?
A. They have a busy lifestyle. B. They have no interest in cooking.
C. They don’t think it worthwhile. D. They are living in the modern society.
49.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A recent article. B. A traditional kitchen.
C. The fine old tradition. D. The Sunday morning activity.
50.How does the author feel towards Sunday roast’s dying out?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Sorry.
51.What is the best title for the passage?
A. Sunday—Best Time for Family B. Sunday Roast Dying Out
C. It’s the Perfect Time for Us D. Let’s Sit Down Together
D
When you don’t have a car and need to get around, are you more likely to call for an Uber or Lyft,
or a cab? Last Friday, Lyft—the ride-sharing company, went public as its stocks (股票) started trading on the market. Lyft has become the first big initial(最初的) public offering of the “gig economy”
age. While the company is not making profits yet, it is changing the meaning of work. What is gig economy and what makes it so appealing(吸引人的?
Gig works are independent contracts or part-time jobs such as Uber. In the gig economy, companies hire independent contractors instead of full-time employees. This is different from traditional companies where full-time workers hold a lifetime career. In the past, only small companies hired contractors, while today, employers like Amazon and Google rely on temporary workforce. These companies save costs as they are not legally required to provide healthcare benefits, retirement savings or paid time off to gig workers.
Gig work appeals to different people for different reasons. For some, it affords flexible timings
and for others who are looking for full-time jobs, it provides a source of income to support themselves. Some people work a full-time job and supplement (补充) their salary with gig jobs such as driving for
Uber or Lyft.
Joining the gig economy may be simple, but maintaining a steady career is easier said than done. Gig work comes with unsteady pay and workloads. You’re your own boss. It sounds fun, but when you have no self-control and an unsteady job, you might splurge all your money the first week and live on bread pieces for the rest of the month! Besides a strong sense of responsibility, gig workers have to stay up to date to get companies to hire them.
Despite the challenges gig workers face, nearly 60 million Americans are part of this workforce.
As this number grows, we have to see how society and companies adapt to this new world of work!
52. What can be learned about Lyft from the passage?
A. It has built up a large fortune.
B. It employs a fixed number of full-time workers.
C. It appeals to people as a means of public transport.
D. It marks the arrival of gig economy age.
53. Who are most likely to become gig workers?
A. People seeking for a steady income. B. People in need of flexible working hours.
C. Those desperate to get paid vacations. D. Those concerned about retirement accounts.
54. What does the underlined word “splurge” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Spend money freely. B. Save money automatically.
C. Earn money quickly. D. Assign money casually.
55. What is the message mainly conveyed in the passage?
A. Gig workers have to face some potential challenges.
B. Gig workers have to possess some much-needed qualities.
C. The appearance of gig companies will solve the job problems.
D. People should adjust to new work trends with the rise of gig companies.

Did you know that about 90% of people in the world are right-handed? Although this subject is rarely discussed, life is often difficult for lefties in a right-handed world.
Many cultures have not been friendly to lefties over the years. 56 In Latin, it was
connected with something “unlucky” and “evil”. In Old English, “left” meant “weak”. In Islamic culture, people commonly use their left hand to clean themselves after they use the toilet, so many Muslims feel the left hand is unclean.
Because of these ideas, parents often force their left-handed children to write with their right
hands. 57 Studies show that forcing left-handed children to use the right hand can cause
learning disorders and speech issues. Besides these challenges, lefties must use tools which aren’t made for them. Most scissors, knives, and musical instruments are designed for righties. Using these items can be difficult or even dangerous for lefties.
58 Some believe that it occurs due to gene movements in the spinal cord before birth.
Another study has said that there are social reasons why few people are lefties. People may choose to become right-handed to fit in with others.
Though there are challenges, being left-handed can be good in many ways. 59 This is
because right-handers who play against them are not used to their moves. Some studies have also found that on average, left-handers are better at remembering things and dealing with difficult math problems.
Today, society’s ideas about being left-handed have started to change. More and more people
believe that being left-handed is a gift to a person instead of a curse (诅咒). 60 It’s on August
13 and called International Lefthanders Day. Left-handed people gather together to celebrate. This special day lets people know that it’s OK if things aren’t all right all the time.
A. Left-handers have some disadvantages.
B. There’s even a special day for left-handers.
C. Being a left-hander sometimes does better jobs.
D. For starters, left-handers might do better in sports.
E. Scientists still aren’t sure why people become left-handed.
F. Unfortunately, this can cause problems with their development.
G. The word was linked to negative ideas in several languages.

M: Yes, but soon I got tired of running to the library to find information, so I started buying country song books and building my own library.

W: Hi, Paul. I have been meaning to talk to you.
M: Hi, Susan. What’s up?
W: Well, I have this great job that is to manage a store in the shopping center.
M: So what is the problem?
W: Well, one of my classmates just told me about a summer job that’s on offer. He thinks I might be able to work in the office of the Lake Hotel here in town.
M: That sounds like a good chance. Why not take it?
W: I’d love to, especially since I’m studying hotel management. It would be a great way to get some useful experience in my field. But I wouldn’t be making as much money as I would in the store, not to mention the free time I could get there.
M: How much is paid for the work in the hotel?
W:$300 a week--$200 less than working in the store.
M: Well, if I were you, I would take the job in the hotel anyway. You could always get a job during the school term next year to make a few more dollars.
W: I think you’re right.
(Text 10)
M: My job is model-making. I make small copies of large buildings. It might seem a strange job, but I knew when I was at school that it was what I wanted to do. So I did a college course, not in art or design as you might expect, but in woodwork. Because of the concentration on fine detail it requires, it was perfect for a model-maker.
I’ve done quite a few jobs now. The toughest task I’ve ever had was from Ireland. I was asked to do a model of part of a large house which had burnt down years before. I’ve done all sorts of buildings since, everything from large castles to the most ordinary farmhouse. The one I liked most, though, was where I had to rebuild a theater. The original building was gone, but this time there were detailed drawings to work from. My model was then shown in an exhibition in London. It was fun because I could go and look at it every day if I wanted to. Generally, I don’t see my models again after I’ve delivered them, as 80% of them are shipped out to Japan or Canada, with the rest shared between England and France.
