Most 15-year-olds are worrying about their math homework and trying to fit in with other kids their age. But Henry Patterson is busy running a successful online business instead.
Patterson, a teenager from Bedfordshire, a county in the East of England, started a business called Not Before Tea when he was just nine. He began by selling sweets, but soon turned to household products like wash bags and soft toys. The items he sells came from the characters of a book he wrote called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip.
Patterson’s early school years were difficult, as he didn’t do as his peers did. He saw the world differently and was rarely invited to parties or play dates. He also spoke with difficulty, which made him feel even more lonely.
But these things didn’t hold him back. To cheer himself up, Patterson gradually buried himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them. His characters started to become popular. He tried very hard to express himself and talk to bigger audiences. His business has earned him 65,000 pounds (566,221 yuan) and he has spoken at the National Retail Business Awards for Teenagers.
Besides this, he does his best to keep his schoolwork as a priority (优先项). He takes his homework with him to events and does it on the train or after a presentation. Two years ago, he wrote a book called Young and Mighty. It describes his search for success and happiness. “The real point of the book is to help people my age think about how to make their way in the world,” he wrote.

Have you ever found yourself waiting at the stop for your bus to arrive and ask a stranger a common question? Perhaps you’ve stood in line waiting for a coffee and feel the need to just look over to the person next to you and ask about the weather.
This is small talk, and despite the name, it’s actually a big part of daily life.“Small talk may seem unimportant, but it’s a natural way for people to connect. It may seem like a waste of time. But it plays an important role in our social interactions. Big relationships are built on small talk,” Lindy Pegler, who has a master’s degree in psychology, wrote on Medium. In fact, we spend a lot of our time making small talk. Often, we find ourselves making small talk with the same people on a regular basis. Coming up with small conversations is the foundation of these relationships.
The benefits of such conversations can actually lead to our happiness and benefit our lives as a whole. In a study conducted by The New York Times, researchers found that having a healthy amount of acquaintances and keeping these relationships contribute to one’s sense of belonging to a community.
So how does one start making small talk? It can be as simple as complimenting (称赞) one’s shirt, asking about their day or commenting on the traffic. “First and foremost, small talk is an act of politeness,” Pegler noted. “Our small talk at our first meeting is our chance to show who we are,” she added.
Who knows where this can lead? Nowadays, the small connections we make can lead to big results. You might find someone who has a common interest, or maybe even someone who turns out to be a close friend. There is one thing for sure: Making small talk can brighten our day — even if it’s just a nice comment or a thoughtful question.
So the next time you find yourself waiting for the bus or checking your watch while you wait in a line, take the opportunity to look up and talk to someone around you. After all, it takes a small connection to lead to a larger one.
8. What does Lindy Pegler think of small talk?
A. It wastes too much time. B. It is a pointless conversation.
C. It is connected with your social status. D. It is important when bonding with others.
9. What does the underlined word “acquaintances” mean?
A. people who love you B. people who you like
C. people who you have met, but knows little D. people who you know more about
10. How do regular social interactions with acquaintances influence people according to researchers?
A. They help people find out who they are.
B. They help people develop communication skills.
C. They allow people to improve their manners.
D. They bring people happiness and a sense of belonging.
11. What are people advised to do when making small talk?

C. Make it important and deep. D. Choose pleasant surroundings.

I woke up with drool (口水) on my pillow this morning. I wouldn’t have minded except it wasn’t mine. The alarm clock rang, and I reached over to turn it off. As I laid my face back down on the pillow, I felt the wet, slimy drool on my pillow case. I opened my eyes and saw a smiling, panting (喘气的), furry face looking down at me. I tried to get up, but she was too fast. My face was suddenly covered in kisses with one going straight up my nose and another right in my ear. I laughed, reached out, picked her up and held her away from my wet face. It was just another morning in a life with dogs.
Why do we welcome them into our homes and our hearts? We know that we are most likely going to outlive them and have our hearts broken when they age quickly and die after ten to fifteen years. We know that there will be vet bills, flea baths and enough fur to make a vacuum cleaner cry. We know that our ears will ring from the barking, that we will be picking up poop (大便) every single day and that we will never get to finish a full sandwich again.
Yet, when we are feeling down or blue, there will always be a soft head on our lap needing to be petted. When we get home after a long day’s work, there will be a happy face at the door waiting for us. Our lives will be full of balls to throw, bellies to scratch, and love and loyalty that will warm our hearts and cheer us up.
For thousands of years, dogs have been our best friends. They remain one of the greatest gifts life has ever given us. Even if they can’t love us for the rest of our lives, they will always love us for all of theirs.
12. How does the author probably feel about his dog every morning?
A. Horrible. B. Impatient.
C. Glad. D. Excited.
13. The purpose of paragraph 2 is to ________.
A. explore why we like dogs.
B. show how dogs can be a burden.
C. give examples of dogs’ bad behavior.
D. describe how dogs can be charming.
14. What does the last sentence of this article mean?
A. Life is never perfect.
B. Dogs are beneficial.
C. Dogs are devoted to their owners.
D Dogs’ owners live longer than them.
15. The writer wrote this article mainly to ________.
A. show the impact of a dog’s company
B. show the importance of raising dogs
C. show that having a dog is worth all the trouble
D. show the advantages and disadvantages of raising dogs
C 13. B 14. C 15. C

根据最后一段前两句“For thousands of years, dogs have been our best friends. They remain one of the greatest gifts life has ever given us.(几千年来,狗一直是我们最好的朋友。它们仍然是生命给予我们的最好礼物之一)”可知,狗已经陪伴我们千年,对我们非常忠诚是我们最好的礼物之一。由此推知,最后一句话的意思就是狗对他们的主人很忠诚。故选C。

上文“Learning a foreign language is one of the hardest things a brain can do and commonly considered a process full of barriers.”(学习一门外语是大脑最难做的事情之一,通常被认为是一个充满障碍的过程。) 下文“Here are some of difficulties faced by many language learners. Also, some useful suggestions will be given.”(以下是许多语言学习者面临的一些困难。
该段下文“Some of us find the initial stage of learning a new language very challenging. 【19题详解】
根据该段标题“Problems with grammar.”(语法问题)可知,该段讲的是关于学习外语的语法方面的问题。以及下文“After all, you can speak a language without knowing grammar.”(毕竟,你不懂语法也能讲一门语言。)
上文“Some believe that the language is hard and that, even if working very hard, they might not succeed.”(有些人认为语言很难,即使很努力,他们也可能不会成功。) 以及下文“Then unavoidably the performances are poor.”(那么不可避免的表现就很差。)
