The World’s Deadliest Beaches Dangerous sea creatures, big waves, and air pollution are just some of the many things you need to take caution to when visiting the world's deadliest beaches.

    Cape Tribulation, Australia

Cape Tribulation is said to be unsafe due to its huge amount of dangerous animals. There are tons of jellyfish and it is not safe to swim near the mouths of the rivers because of crocodile warnings. Poisonous(有毒的)snakes and cassowaries have also been found. According to The Cairns Post, a 46-year-old woman is believed to have been taken by a crocodile while swimming at Thornton beach, a beach in Cape Tribulation.

    Gansbaai, South Africa

Also called “Shark Alley”, this beach is known as the world of the great white sharks. It is so filled with sharks that they have actually created shark tours for tourists. The locals claim that visitors have a 99 percent chance of seeing a great white shark from April to September. In 2011 a man going diving was attacked by two sharks. His body never returned to the surface.

    Nazare, Portugal

Also known as “Portugal’s Monster”, Nazare is a wonderful vacation destination with some of the biggest and deadliest waves ever surfed. “In Nazare,” a Hawaiian surfer told Time, “the ocean is known as a place of death, not of riding waves.” Nazare’s waves are created much larger due to the Nazare Canyon. They are so dangerous that big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira was nearly killed during a wipeout in 2013.

    Snake Island, Brazil

Snake Island, also known as Ilha de Queimada Grande, is home to “the world’s deadliest snake” —the golden lancehead viper. Its poison is said to easily melt human flesh. Access to this island has been banned due to people being killed in the past.

    21. What can we do in Gansbaai according to the text?

    A. Observe jellyfish.  B. Enjoy shark tours. C. Swim safely.  D. Feed sharks.

    22. What kind of risk do people face in Nazare?

    A. Air pollution.  B. Crocodiles.  C. Big waves.  D.Poisonous fish.

    23. Where are people at the great risk of snakes?

    A. In Cape Tribulation and Ilha de Queimada Grande.

    B. In Cape Tribulation and Portugal’s Monster.

    C. In Gansbaai and Ilha de Queimada Grande.

    D. In Portugal’s Monster and Ilha de Queimada Grande.

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called "Brownie". My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.

One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of my Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.

Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked () or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.

Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

24What would Brownie do when someone was ill in the family?

ALook at them sadly. BStay with them.

CPlay games with them. DTouch them gently.

25We can infer from Paragraph 2 that Brownie ________.

Awould eat anything when hungry Bfelt sorry for her mistake

Cloved playing hide-and-seek Ddisliked the author's dad

26Some people got frightened by Brownie when she ________.

    Asmiled Bbarked

Crushed to them Dtried to be funny

27Which of the following best describes Brownie?

    AShy BPolite CBrave DCaring

    C

It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It's then that you might want to cat something sweet, perhaps a Coke or a chocolate bar to lift your mood. After all, it's popularly believed that a "sugar rush" gives us energy.

But a study published in Neuroscience and Biobehavoral Reviews in April suggests that sugar can make us feel worse rather than boost our moods.

The German and UK researchers studied the effect of sugar on various aspects of mood, including anger, alertness(警惕性), depression and tiredness.

They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense(强烈的) over time.

According to the researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly leading to a burst of energy and a short "feel good" period. However, a they begin to digest(消耗)the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling.

To remain on a "high", people are likely to cat more and more sugar until they become addicted to it. As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people feeling tired and less alert.

But the study findings needn't make us think we must give up sweet food altogether. According to the World Health Organization, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as these make up less than 5 percent of daily total energy intake.

So the next time you feel tired and can't concentrate, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. Maybe a spot of exercise at midday would be a better idea!

    28. What does the underlined word "boost" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. improve    B. harm     C. control   D. change

    29. How did the people feel in the end after they had sugar in the study?

    A. They felt relaxed.      B. They felt more tired.

    C. They were more alert.     D. They felt energetic.

    30. What do we learn from Paragraphs 5-6?

    A. Our mood is connected to our blood sugar levels.

    B. Taking in more sugar benefits mental health.

    C. Getting caffeine is another way to relax.

    D. Sugar and caffeine have the same effects.

    31. What would the author suggest people do when they are tired?

    A. Give up sweet food.      B. Have a bar of chocolate.

    C. Do some exercise at midnight.    D. Eat proper foods with natural sugars.

    D

Want to get your packages delivered via robots? Now there’s an app for that. If you live in Washington D.C., or Redwood, you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding it’s own business, but attracting the attention of many curious onlookers.

The autonomous machines were part of a pilot program(试点计划)last year by Starship Technologies focusing on delivering meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world. This week, the company unveiled plans to broaden its delivery service beyond food to include packages, a move that led it to declare itself “the world’s first robot package delivery service”. The next time you order food, this cute robot might roll up to deliver it. The package delivery service is not available to everyone yet.

The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect obstacles from 30 feet away. “The robot can operate through anything,” Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starship’s D.C. office, said, “If you had something in the way---a stick--- it’s able to climb sticks.”

To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the company’s app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address”, a unique address inside a Starship facility, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon.com. Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text notification通知)that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot. The robots are opened by customers via a mobile phone code.

Barriers exist for robotic ground delivery, with many states requiring that humans be in control of delivery robots. Those regulations haven’t stopped Starship Technologies from accumulating experience on streets around the globe ahead of the company’s latest launch. The company says its robots have covered more than 125,000 miles in more than 100 cities in 20 countries.

    32. What can we know about the robotic delivery?

    A. It is part of a trial project by Starship Technologies.

    B. You can use the service free of charge via smart phones.

    C. The robots are opened by customers with a text notification.

    D. The robotic delivery is available to everyone at present.

    33. What does the underlined word “unveiled” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Revised.            B. Released.           C. Restored.         D. Reset.

    34. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A. The good news of the service.

    B. The disadvantages of the robotic delivery.

    C. How the robotic delivery works.

    D. Robotic delivery develops despite challenges.

    35. What is the best title for the text?

    A. A New Robot Was Invented          B. Wheelless Robots Are on the Way

    C. Packages Will Be Delivered by Robots     D. How Robots Deliver Packages

    第二节 (5小题;每小题2分,满分10)
