Below is a list of activities that will get you excited and add a bit of fun into your schedule at the same time.
Ready, set, play!
Join a team sport
Playing sport as part of a team can help you get active while making friends and feeling part of your community. This list of links will lead you through to sports clubs and fixtures across the state, or you can use the My Community directory to search for your sport of choice.
Make date night active night
Date night (or any time you hang with loved ones or friends) doesn’t have to be spent sitting in a cinema. Get active on your next date by going bowling, playing laser tag or paintball, or sinking balls at minigolf.
Catch and kick
Anyone with kids will know that sometimes entertaining them takes priority over looking after your own health. Kill two birds with one stone and take them to the park to kick a footy or throw a ball back and forth. Once everyone’s practised their kicking, throwing and catching skills, take things to the next level by asking them to throw or kick long and make you run for it.
Take the stairs
An oldy but a goody, taking the stairs instead of a lift is great for working the major muscle groups in the legs. It might not seem like the most fun option for a workout, but you can fit a surprising amount of activity into every day by taking the stairs whenever they are an option. And if you get hooked(喜欢上), you can even become a competitive stair climber.

Going to school can be a demanding obstacle for many, but some people are more than up for the challenge. For Dylan Kuehl, being a student has been a challenging joy. The 38-year-old has had a passion for studying, and believes that the more he leans, the more he learns to see the world differently. This open-minded approach and enthusiastic mindset is all the more inspiring as Kuehl has Down syndrome. He knows the struggle of breaking new ground from a lifetime of experience of being different. He has sustained his ability to shine as a unique individual by graduating from The Evergreen State College in Washington State. Kuehl is the first person with Down syndrome in the college’s 51-year history to earn a four-year degree. Not only that, but this also makes him the first person with Down syndrome in Washington state to achieve this remarkable milestone.
Kuehl’s passion for creativity led him to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree. He enjoyed classes inpainting and dance as part of his curriculum(课程), but his primary focus was writing. Out of 900 graduates, he was one of three to be selected to give an address at the graduation ceremony.

Parents are an enormously powerful force in the lives of children. Whether Johnny can read, whether Johnny knows right from wrong, whether Johnny is a happy, well—adjusted kid, or shy and bad—tempered, has a whole lot to do with the kind of parenting Johnny has received. If Johnny’s mom and dad have been able to come through with lasting, determining, loving attention, the odds are Johnny is on track to become a productive, compassionate citizen. If they have not, Johnny is in trouble—and so is our nation.
Thirty years ago Chicago sociologist James S. Coleman showed that parental involvement mattered far more in determining school success than any quality of the formal education system. Across a wide range of subject areas, in literature, science and reading, Coleman estimated that the parent was twice as powerful as the school in determining achievement at age fourteen. Psychologist Lawrence Steinberg, who recently completed a six—year study of 20 ,000 teenagers in nine different communities, confirms the importance of parents. Steinberg shows that one out of three parents is “seriously disengaged” from his or her adolescent’s education, and this is the primary reason why so many American students perform below their potential—and below students in other rich countries.
A weight of evidence now demonstrates obvious links between absent parents and a wide range of behavioral and emotional problems in children. A 1997 study of 90 ,000 teenagers—the Add Health Project undertaken by the Carolina Population Center and the Adolescent Health Program at the University of Minnesota—found that youngsters are less likely get hopeless, use drugs or become involved in crime when they spent significant time with their parents. This study found that only the physical presence of a parent in the home after school, at dinner and at bedtime significantly reduces the incidence of risky behavior among teenagers.
8. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Children should be taught to be successful in life.
B. Parents’ character has a deep influence on children.
C. Children are affected by many factors during the growth.
D Parents should be strict with their children about behaviors.
9. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Odds. B. Children. C. Citizens. D. Parents.
10. What’s the purpose of Lawrence Steinberg’s research?
A. To find out why there are so many crimes.
B. To know the importance of parents’ company.
C. To get ways to prevent teenagers’s bad behaviors.
D. To find links between parents’ education and crimes.
11. What ’s the author’s attitude towards parents’ company with children?
A. Intolerant. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
B 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“Parents are an enormously powerful force in the lives of children. Whether Johnny can read, whether Johnny knows right from wrong, whether Johnny is a happy, well—adjusted kid, or shy and bad—tempered, has a whole lot to do with the kind of parenting Johnny has received.(父母在孩子的生活中是一股非常强大的力量。Johnny是否会读书,是否能明辨是非,Johnny是一个快乐的、适应能力强的孩子,还是害羞、坏脾气的孩子,都与Johnny所接受的教育方式有很大关系。)”可以推断出,孩子的学习能力,判断是非能力和性格是什么样的,跟父母的教育有很大的关系,父母对孩子有很深的影响。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“If Johnny’s mom and dad have been able to come through with lasting, determining, loving attention, the odds are Johnny is on track to become a productive, compassionate citizen.(如果Johnny的父母能够给予他持久的、坚定的、充满爱的关注,那么Johnny很可能会成为一个富有成效、富有同情心的公民。)”以及划线词所在句“If they have not, Johnny is in trouble—and so is our nation.(如果他们没有,Johnny就有麻烦了,我们的国家也有麻烦了。)” 所以,they指代的是Johnny’s mom and dad。
根据第二段“Psychologist Lawrence Steinberg, who recently completed a six—year study of 20 ,000 teenagers in nine different communities, confirms the importance of parents. Steinberg shows that one out of three parents is “seriously disengaged” from his or her adolescent’s education, and this is the primary reason why so many American students perform below their potential—and below students in other rich countries.(心理学家Lawrence Steinberg最近完成了一项针对9个不同社区2万名青少年为期6年的研究,证实了父母的重要性。Steinberg指出,三分之一的父母“严重脱离”他们对于青少年的教育,这就是如此多的美国学生表现低于他们的潜力,甚至低于其他富裕国家的学生的主要原因。)”可知,Lawrence Steinberg的研究目的就是为了证明父母陪伴的重要性,缺乏父母的陪伴,会导致青少年表现较差。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一句话“Parents are an enormously powerful force in the lives of children.(父母在孩子的生活中是一股非常强大的力量。)” A.
D
Climate change may increase the risk of viruses becoming capable of infecting new hosts in the Arctic, suggests a study of genetic material from a Canadian lake.
Canadian scientists found that an increase in glacier melt at Lake Hazen, the Arctic’s largest lake by volume and another location was linked to a greater risk of viral effects, where a virus infects a new host for the first time. Melting glaciers (融化的冰川) were considered a result of climate change globally.
The team from the University of Ottawa, led by Audree Lemieux, gathered soil and other items from the lake and sequenced (序列) the RNA and DNA in the samples. The researchers found characters of viruses and their potential hosts including animals, plants and so on. They then ran an algorithm (算法) recently developed by a different research team, which assesses the chance of coevolution (共同进化) among unrelated groups of organisms. The algorithm allowed the team to measure the risk of spillover, and suggested this was higher in lake samples nearer to the point where larger branches — carrying more meltwater from nearby glaciers — flow into the lake.
“Our main finding is that we show that for this specific lake, the spillover risk increases with the melting of glaciers. We’re not crying wolf.” says Lemieux.
She says the risk of infectious diseases coming from the Arctic is low today due to the region’s lack of “bridges”, such as mosquitoes, that can spread viruses to other species. However, the researchers note that climate change not only melts glaciers, but is also expected to cause more species to move towards the poles, which they warn “could have dramatic effect in the High Arctic”.
Exactly how glacier melt might increase spillover risk isn’t entirely clear from simply running the algorithm. Co-author Stephane Aris-Brosou says one idea is that extra run-off simply increases the mixing of species because their local environment is disturbed, physically bringing together viruses and potential new hosts that wouldn’t otherwise meet each other.
12. Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?
A. Glaciers have slowed in melting process.
B. A new host in the Arctic has been affected.
C. Scientists guess viruses will come in the Arctic.
D. Viral spillover will appear in the Arctic in time.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. What we can do to stop the viruses in the Arctic.
B. Why Branches of the lake are keys in spilling over viruses.
C. How scientists calculate the risk of spillover in the Arctic.
D. What signatures of viruses and their potential hosts shows.
14. What does Lemieux mean by saying “We’re not crying wolf.”?
A. The virus spillover will happen with glacier melting.
B. Viruses won’t spread widely due to lack of bridge.
C. Scientists have made great efforts in preventing viruses.
D. There is no need to worry about the viruses in the Arctic.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Viruses Appearing in Two Places in the Arctic
B. Glacier Melting Resulting in the Virus Spillover
C. Scientists’ Calculation about the Viruses in the Arctic
D. Climate Change Linked to Risk of Viruses in the Arctic
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段第一句“Canadian scientists found that an increase in glacier melt at Lake Hazen, the Arctic’s largest lake by volume and another location was linked to a greater risk of viral effects, where a virus infects a new host for the first time. (加拿大科学家发现,在北极体积最大的湖泊Lake Hazen湖和另一个地方,冰川融化的加剧与病毒感染风险增加有关,病毒在那里首次感染了新的宿主。)”可知在北极首次有新的宿主被感染。故选B。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段第一句“The team from the University of Ottawa, led by Audree Lemieux, gathered soil and other items from the lake and sequenced (序列) the RNA and DNA in the samples. (来自渥太华大学的研究小组由Audree Lemieux领导,他们从湖中采集土壤和其他物品,并对样本中的RNA和DNA进行测序。)”以及最后一句“The algorithm allowed the team to measure the risk of spillover, and suggested this was higher in lake samples nearer to the point where larger branches — carrying more meltwater from nearby glaciers — flow into the lake.(该算法使团队能够测量病毒传播的风险,并表明在更大的分支——携带更多来自附近冰川的融水——流入湖中的点附近的湖泊样本中,这一风险更高。)”
“We’re not crying wolf.” ,用来表示所说的话并不是危言耸听,结合划线句前“Our main finding is that we show that for this specific lake, the spillover risk increases with the melting of glaciers.(我们的主要发现是,对于这个特定的湖泊,病毒溢出的风险随着冰川的融化而增加。)” 故选A。
根据文章第一段“Climate change may increase the risk of viruses becoming capable of infecting new hosts in the Arctic, suggests a study of genetic material from a Canadian lake.(一项对加拿大一个湖泊遗传物质的研究表明,气候变化可能会增加病毒在北极感染新宿主的风险。)”

The Smile
I was in grade 7 and was the topper of my class. Friends surrounded me everywhere and I was the star of the school. My parents started creating special spaces at home to display all my medals, certificates and awards. Guests who came home, teachers who met my parents, friends and everyone who met my parents always had these words to say, “You have a very talented child. You are very lucky.” I was filled with happiness and pride when I heard these words and I knew that I had made my parents very happy.
Days rolled by, and I grew stronger and smarter and I was no match for anyone in any field. Things were fine until one day. I came back home with an award I won for standing first in the speech competition at school. Filled with pride, I gave it to my mother and waited for her beautiful smile. She smiled and congratulated me and asked, “Did your friends participate in the race? Did they run the race with you? What were their positions in the race?” I was a little angry. I have won the first place and why would my mother want to know about my friends. In fact, I do not even remember who was second and third or who participated because I was focused to be the first and the other positions were of no significance to me. I managed to tell her that I was very tired and I do not remember everything.
I started noticing a change in my mother, especially her smile. It was not the same lovely smile that I used to see. She started asking about my friends who were average achievers and who I do not even consider my equals now. I do not even know where they sit in my classroom. I was meant to be the first and I did not want to look back to see who was behind. I started ignoring her questions about my friends and I managed to change the topic.

Paragraph 2:
I was on the track field the next day at school ready to run the 200m running race.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
One day, it was too much to handle when I was getting ready for the sports competition when she asked why I was not practicing with my loser friends. I told my mother that I was meant to be the first and I had no business to be with friends who are not ambitious. My mother patiently listened to me and told me that in the name of success I have become like a horse with blinds that makes its vision focus only on what is in front and not bother about what is around. I have forgotten to enjoy the simple little things in life, spending time and helping my friends in their difficulty, being their support, learning together. I realized my mistake and decided to change.
Paragraph 2:
I was on the track field the next day at school ready to run the 200m running race. The race began and in no time, I was in lead. Suddenly, I heard my friend fall to the ground. With no second thoughts I ran to him, lifted him and helped him finish the race. I helped my friend to sit down and relax and while doing so in the corner of my eye, I knew there was someone who was looking at me. It was my mother. Her eyes were filled with tears and there I saw what I have not seen for years.
