Arbeia Roman Fort (城堡) and Museum

    Location and History

Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian’s Wall. It was the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been a World Heritage (遗产) Site. Built around AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers who were stationed along Hadrian’s Wall. The fort has been gradually uncovered and some original parts have been revealed. There are reconstructions that show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have looked.

    The Reconstructions

The reconstructions of the Commanding Officer’s house and soldiers’ quarters are strikingly different. The accommodation for soldiers is dark and uncomfortable, while the Commanding Officer’s house is spacious and luxurious, with courtyards with fountains for him and his family to enjoy.

    The Museum

Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time. You will see weapons, tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also discover how the Romans buried their dead and see tombstones (墓碑) which survive to this day. There is a “hands-on” area allowing visitors to dig on a certain site and study their findings with the help of museum staff. You can piece together pottery (陶器), or try writing just as the Romans would have done. For children, they can build this ancient Roman fort with building blocks by themselves.

M-U-R-R-A-Y-A is the word that pushed Zaila Avant garde, 15, to victory in the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The annual event took place in July, 2021, in Florida.

After correctly spelling Murraya, which is a type of flowering tree, Zaila became the first Black American contestant ever to win the national title. She is the second Black winner, after Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica, who won the bee in 1998.

Since 1925, the Scripps spelling bee has promoted literacy. Competing in the event helps students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies and develop self-confidence.

Zaila’s parents introduced her to basketball when she was a young child. After receiving a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records on her eighth birthday, she set her sights on becoming a record holder. “When I looked in the book,” she said, “I decided that I wanted to be in it.” Now, at the age of 15, Zaila holds three world records.

The third﹣generation hybrid rice which was developed by Yuan Longping, the "father of hybrid rice",and his team underwent its first public yield(产量)monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety, G3﹣1S/P19, came to 1046.3 kg per mu about 667 square meters, based on two plots of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central China's Hunan Province.

"Some previous high﹣yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important characteristics of the third﹣generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency. " saidQianQian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.

Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third﹣generation hybrid rice is easier to be planted by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not "ideal conditions" carefully selected beforehand but were close to the paddies(稻田) of ordinary farmers.

Nowadays, China's average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu. Ordinary farmers can produce 600kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second﹣generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third﹣generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu. China now feeds around 20 percent of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's arable(可耕种的)land.

At present, Yuan's team has nine third﹣generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third﹣generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development of China's rice production with higher quality and yield.

28What feature of the new hybrid rice doesQianQian mainly talk about

AIt saves a lot more water.BIt achieves a higher yield.

CIt saves much more farmland.DIt has a shorter growing period.

29Why is the new hybrid rice not tested in ideal areas

AThe ordinary farmers master planting technology.

BThe researchers want to reduce the experiment cost.

CThe growing conditions the new hybrid rice needs are simple.

DThe previous rice farming provides researchers with experience.

30What is the fourth paragraph mainly about

AThe high output of the third﹣generation hybrid rice.

BThe promising future of the new hybrid rice variety.

CThe advanced technology of the research on hybrid rice.

DThe differences between the three hybrid rice varieties.

31Which one could be the best title of the text

    AThe Development of China's Rice

BThe High Yield of the New Hybrid Rice

CThe Contribution of the Great Scientist

DThe Way to Feed the World's Population

Students and Technology in the Classroom

I love my blackberry (黑莓手机)— it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices (设备) and truly communicate with others.

On one occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule-no laptops, IPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students think that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration (专心) and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a rally good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

32Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ______.

Athe course material Bothers’ misuse of technology

Cdiscussion topics Dthe author’s class rules

33The underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means ______.

    Aexplore Baccept Cchange Drefuse

34According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ______.

Akeep students from doing independent thinking

Bencourage students to have deep conversations

Chelp students to better understand difficult themes

Daffect students’ concentration on the teacher’s ideas

35It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ______.

Ais quite stubborn in teaching Bwill give up teaching history

Cwill change his teaching plan soon Dvalues technology-free dialogues in his class

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Technology is here to stay. ___36___. However, they are often unsure on how to help children use technology responsibly and keep a balance between online and offline time. Here are some tips.

    Have a device contract(合同)

Having a device usage contract allows parents and children to work through what responsible technology usage looks like in your family and ensure that everyone is aware. ___37___. Kids are more likely to make sense of the reasons you have for restriction.

    ___38___

Although this tip seems like common sense, it is often difficult due to the demand of work and the expectation of being constantly connected. By ensuring you build offline time into your own day and communicate that with your children, they will see the value and benefits. Whether you are reading a book or just taking a walk, letting your children be aware of your offline actions will encourage them to do the same!

    Encourage non-tech activities

One great way to keep kids off their screens is to ensure that they have other activities to fill their time. ___39___. These activities are also great ways to help children to develop their social skills and confidence.

    Tech-free family time

Once a week, pencil-in a “tech-free family time” in your schedule. It can be a meal or trip. To help increase the success of outings, try designing special activities, i. e., going to the beach to build a sand castle that looks the same as a photo you have found online. ___40___

    AModel good technology use

    BCommunicate with children

CA little extra planning goes a long way

DThe contract is helpful to the settlement of conflicts

EParents are seeing more technology in their homes and jobs

FAlso, drafting the contract together promotes understanding

GThis can come in a variety of forms: soccer, fencing and more

In the early 19th century, when an outbreak of cholera hit Europe, millions of people died from the disease. As a young doctor, John Snow became 57           (frustrate) because no one knew how to prevent or treat cholera. In time, he rose to become 58           famous doctor. However, he never lost his desire to destroy cholera once and for all.

In general, doctors in those days had two contradictory theories to explain how cholera spread. Snow subscribed 59            the second theory. It was correct, but he still needed proof. 60            (consequence), when an outbreak of cholera hit London in 1845, Snow began to investigate. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost destroyed America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation (破坏) and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the unforgettably initial shock; he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, heartbroken, saying: “My, son!” “My daughter!” Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there’s nothing you can do!”

To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins saying, “Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home.” To which this loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”

The police came and said, “You’re angry, anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!” To which he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped.

The Greatest Scientist in My Heart

Madame Curie was a world famous woman scientist, who was born in a teacher’s family in Poland in 1867 and died in 1934.

From her early childhood, she loved to study and hoped to become a great scientist. She finished middle school at the age of 16. At 24 she left for Paris and entered Paris University. In Paris she lived a very simple life and studied very hard. Madame Curie devoted her whole life to the study of science. She won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903 and for chemistry in 1911.

It is not easy for a woman to succeed in her work. It is even more difficult for a woman to win the Nobel Prize twice in her life. So Madame Curie will always be remembered as a great woman.

    第二节续写(满分25分) (One possible version)

Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...Then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son’s voice. After screaming his son’s name, “ARMAND!” he heard back, “Dad?! It’s me, Dad!” The faint but familiar voice brought tears of relief to his eyes. “What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked anxiously, digging more forcefully with his bare hands.

“There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad,” Armand replied, “We’re scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you’re here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us.” “Come out, boy!” the father yelled eagerly. “No, Dad! Let the other kids out first, because I know you’ll get me!
