Britain seems to have great creativity—especially in the performing and visual arts.
    Theatrical tradition
Theaters in Britain date back at least to the 16th century, and the most famous playwright is of course William
Shakespeare. A company was founded in his name, with a stage at his birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon. It has trained
generations of actors. In the 20th century, classical and more modern plays were also performed at many regional
theaters, where actors and writers gained experience.
    Film stars
The world of film-making has involved British creative talent from the beginning. Charlie Chaplin, born in
poverty in London’s East End, began as a child entertainer in music halls. He then became a pioneer of silent movies
in Hollywood and created many black-and-white classics during the First World War. British actors, who were often

classically trained in theater, like Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness, became household names after the Second
    World War.
    Supporting talent
Film-making creativity has been supported by two major studios. Productions at Shepperton have included
Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi and Ridley Scott’s Alien. Pinewood’s most famous products must be the James Bond
films. Both theater and film have their own annual festivals, including one of the biggest festivals—in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh.
    Visual expression
The visual arts also show Britain’s creative spirit, from Romantic Age painters like Turner and Constable to
groups such as the Pre-Raphaelites and the modernist sculpture of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Today’s
famous artists—Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin—are regularly in the newspapers, and their works are sold at high prices.
    21. Which of the following helps actors and writers a lot?
    A.Musical theaters. B. Stratford-Upon-Avon. C. London’s West End. D. Regional theaters.
22.What can we learn from the passage about Charlie Chaplin?
    A. He came from a rich family.
    B. He went to theater school as a child.
    C. He began as a child entertainer in Hollywood.
    D. He contributed to the early film industry in Hollywood. 23.What do we know about Damien Hirst and TraceyEmin?
    A. You have to pay a lot to buy their works. B. They have both invented new art forms.
    C. They mainly learnt from Romantic Age painters.
    D. You can buy their works from many major galleries.
    B
Twelve years ago, Danny called me from a dark, damp subway station. “A baby!” he shouted. “Get down here,
and flag down a police car or something.” By nature, Danny is a very calm person, so when I could almost feel his
heartbeat through the phone line, I ran.
When I got to the subway station, Danny was holding a light-brown-skinned baby, about a day old. The baby
had been wrapped (被包裹) in an oversize black sweatshirt and left on the ground in a corner behind the gate.
What neither of us knew, or could have assumed, was that Danny had not just saved an abandoned infant; he
    had found our son.
Three months later, Danny appeared in family court to tell the story of finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge
asked, “Would you be interested in adopting this baby?” The question surprised everyone in the courtroom, except
    Danny, who answered, simply, “Yes.”
“But I know it’s not that easy,” he said.
“Well, it can be,” said the judge before giving orders to allow me to be a parent-to-be.
My first reaction, when I heard, went something like, “Are you crazy? How could you say yes without asking me?
In three years as a couple, we had never discussed adopting a child: I was an devoted playwright ( 剧 作 家 )
working as a part-time word clerk. Danny was a respected yet wildly under-paid social worker. We had a roommate,
who slept in our living room, to help pay the rent.
We knew how many challenges couples usually faced when they want to have a baby. And while Danny had
    patience and selflessness, I didn’t know how to change a diaper ( 尿 布 ), let alone nurse a child. I didn’t trust the
social system and was sure there would be difficulties. Also, I couldn’t handle parenthood. So I promised myself I
    wouldn’t devote to it.
The caretaker held the baby and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the
innocence and hope he showed to me, I, like Danny, completely fell for him.

    24. Why did Danny call the author?
    A. Because he found their lost son.
    B. Because he found a deserted baby and needed some help.
    C. Because he had a heart trouble.
    D. Because someone gave birth to a baby there.
    25. What’s the reaction of the author after hearing Danny’s answer to the judge’s question?
    A. Very excited . B. A littleangry.
    C. Worried. D. Disappointed.
    26. Eventually, what would the couple do according to the last paragraph?
    A. They would send the baby to somebody.
    B. They would adopt the baby.
C.They would leave the baby at the court.
    D. They would bring up the baby together with the judge.
    27. According to the passage, what conclusion can we draw on the couple?
    A. Outgoing and friendly. B. Hardworking and serious.
    C. Kind and caring. D. Cold and indifferent.
    C
Soil creates life from death. The production of more than 95% of the food we eat relies on soil. But this
precious resource is eroded (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing crops,
fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.
Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their prologue
( 前 言 ) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil management a federal
priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes and consequences of its erosion.
In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions—many of them simple, and some centuries old.
They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including planting diverse crops in rotation ( 轮 种 ),
increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able to produce
rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of fertile soil.
Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away? The answer, not surprisingly, rests in
global capitalism. Farmers' profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to field every
season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real top-down change in how
agricultural production is managed. "The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted to farmers and environmental
activists," they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in which farmers are less independent
business people growing and selling food, and more government-supported land workers managing both food
production and soil protection. This should be the core of agriculture.
Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply and
thoughtfully in our farmers so that they can invest deeply and thoughtfully in the land. This is the future of farming.
    28. What is the function of paragraph 1?
    A. To begin a story. B. To introduce the topic.
    C. To warn people of a danger. D. To mention a fact. 29. What are the main contents of the book A World WithoutSoil?
    A. A letter to the government. B. The future of farming.
    C. The basic science of soil and the causes and consequences of its erosion.
    D. Some possible solutions.
    30. What do Handelsman and Cohen advise?
A .Farmers should invest in the most profitable crops.
    B. Only environmental activists need to take up the burden of protecting soil.
    C. The whole world just needs to make a few possible changes in the management of agricultural production.
    D. Farmers should work the land with the help of government

    31. What’s the type of the passage?
    A. Biography B. Book review
    C. Planting guidelines D. A tale

Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings( 幼 苗 )aboard the Tiangong space station and this
experiment may offer key insights into how astronauts can grow food to support long—term space missions, experts
said on Monday. This experiment is the first to produce the complete life cycle of the plant, which begins with a seed
and ends with a mature plant producing new seeds.
The breakthrough was conducted in the Wentian space laboratory, which was launched into orbit on July 24,
2022. Three astronauts were conducting the experiment smoothly and testing the plants according to the plan.
“The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher of the task, adding that the
experiment also contained seedlings of a small flowering plant often used by scientists to study mutations( 变 异 ).
“The astronauts will keep monitoring the plants, and if it is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds
and bring them back to Earth for further studies,” she noted
The flowering stage is crucial for plant reproductive development. “We want to investigate how microgravity
can affect the plant flowering time and whether it is possible to use the microgravity environment to control the
    related process,” she said.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds of rice and other crops to space to help them mutate and produce
higher yields once they were planted on Earth. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the tough
conditions of space such as microgravity and lack of air.
Rice has been a main food for astronauts since the early days of space exploration. Freeze—dried chicken and
rice was the menu for the Apollo 11 mission, which carried the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969.
“But if we want to land on and explore Mars, bringing food from Earth is not enough to provide for the
astronauts’ long journey and mission in space. We have to find a food source for long term space explorations,”
    Zheng added.
    32. What’s the significance of Chinese recent space rice experiment?
    A. It enables human beings to move to another planet.
    B. It helps people get a better idea of the human life cycle.
    C. It inspires more other countries to do space explorations
    D. It makes it possible to carry out long—term space missions 33. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. The mutation. B. The experiment.
    C. The exploration. D. The space mission. 34. Why have crop seeds been brought to space since the last century?
    A. To promote genetic changes and increase crop harvest.
    B. To figure out how to create an earth—like environment.
    C. To study the impact of microgravity on crop growth.
    D. To develop new crop species with strong ability to adapt.
    35. Where is the text most probably from?
    A. Amedical report. B. A fashionmagazine.
    C. A science newspaper. D. A historybook.

Reading Every Day, Lots of benefits
As is well-known, reading is much more ben eficial than just amusement . Reading printed books for some
time every day can make you smarter, kinder and more relaxed. 36 For instance, before they’ ve
fully developed their reading skills, kids can benefit from having access to printed materials and being read to
regularly. Getting kids exposed to books, magazines, e t c at an early age can help encourage them to be life- long

that reading for just 30 minutes has similar stress-reducing effects to doing 30 minutes of yoga.
Reading can help put your phone away at night.
If you’re too busy to read during the day, consider choosing a good book to read as part of your bedtime
routine. Reading a good book before going to bed is a great choice to be away from your phone— something most
of us admit to doing. Research has shown that smart phone use at night makes it harder for people to fall asleep
and leads to an overall decline in sleep quality. 39
    Reading helps b u i l d u p family bond.
Reading doesn’ t have to be a solitary ( 独 自 的 ) activity. When parents read out loud to their children, they
can pass on the benefits of reading and encourage meaningful interactions. 40 A recent study found that
printed books, in contrast to tablets( 平 板 电 脑 )and e- readers, can promote the deepest connections between
    caretakers and children.
    A. Reading can lower stress.
    B. Children should be positive to read various books.
    C. And the positive effects can be felt at any age.
    D. This effect possibly has something to do with the way such books are written.
    E. To gain the positive effects of reading to kids, parents should stick to common books.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital (音乐演奏会)was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it
for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing thing into something
worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom
suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families to visit them that
often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the
recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage
House seemed like a win-win situation because not only could I play more songs, but I would
also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the
    coming including many old classics.
When the exciting day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking
through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious
grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just
waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-
haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded
room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables, isolation hung like a dark
    cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced
herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

    第二节
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the
whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the
piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and
announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.”
Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano
and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to
animatedly dance in the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others
tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far
better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have
the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading
to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

W: That’s right. I’m interested in Chinese culture. Maybe you can tell me something about it.
M: Sure, but not right now since I must go to the library. How about tomorrow?
    W: OK.
    Text 10
Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April
26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting
pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a
    businessman.
However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring the nature. At first, John spent
    7

his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed
observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing
their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t
have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family,
so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn
some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We’re lucky now to have so many paintings of American
    birds by John Audubon.
