After some months, it was time for farming and the farmer was already old and weak and couldn’t dig the ground any more,so the old farmer wrote this letter to his son
in prison.“Son,this year I will not plant cassava and yam because I can’t dig the field,

    C
Leaf peeping, the practice of traveling to watch nature display the fall colors, is a
beloved annual activity, especially in New England. Typically, by the end of September,
leaves take on warmer colors throughout the U.S. But this year, many areas haven’t even
shaken off the green shades of summer. In Maine, forest rangers reported less than 70%
color change and modest leaf drop.
It’s commonly believed that trees, like people, must prepare for winter. When fall
arrives, and day length and temperature drop, trees respond by ending green substance
production and absorbing remaining nutrients, causing leaves to lose the original color.
Greens give way to yellows, reds and oranges that make for splendid autumn displays.
Warm fall temperatures can make the fall colors appear later. Worse, dry summers
can cause leaves to miss the fall color turn altogether. Delay of the start of the fall colors,
which has been moving later into the fall, could continue. “My observations in the last
decade have had more years that were later than what we consider historical averages. It
can be a trend as the planet warms,” said the expert Jim Salge.
It’s not just the plants that suffer. “Turning leaves offer an irresistible mass of color
which, by estimate(估计), brings in as much as billions of dollars a year in tourism in
New England,” said Andy Finton, a forest ecologist. That’s another good reason to focus
on preserving forests. Leaf peeping can stay part of the area’s feature if forests are given
enough protection. “If we can keep them unharmed, they’ll provide things we’ve
depended on, as well as fall inspiration,” said Finton. 28. What is special about the leaves in Maine this year?
    A. They take on warm colors. B. They drop earlier than normal.
    C. They totally miss the fall color turn. D. They stay green longer.
    29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A. Ways of trees surviving winter. B. Explanation of leaves changing color.
    C. Functions of the green substance. D. Effect of climate change on fall leaves.
    30. What is the “trend” according to Jim Salge in paragraph 3?
    A. The earth gets drier. B. The temperature gets higher.
    C. The earth gets warmer. D. The leaves delay color change.
    31. What’s the purpose of this text?
    A. To introduce leaf peeping. B. To report the right time for leaf peeping.
    C. To warn people to take care of forests. D. To call on people to admire fall leaves.
    D
Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term
“pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels
like someone who is working hard- he or she spends a long time in the 1ibrary and is not
afraid to push on late into the night - but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he
or she doesn't actually accomplish much.
    5

This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example,at Dartmouth
there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the
students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were
definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through(快速翻转) her chemistry
notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long
hours, these students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently
accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they’re
pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work- it’s how they've always done it, and
it's how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better
way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it.
It not only wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get
work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive(认知)science
research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the
material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To
understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula (公式): work
accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish
something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach
on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time. 32. Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?
A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B.Mike is sitting at a schoolroom in preparation for a final exam quietly.
C.Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
D.Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.
    33. Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that .
    A. they want to spend more time on study B.they are eager to follow their friends' way C. they have got used to their study approach D.they are unaware of their pseudo-working
34.What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?
    A. Last B. Best C.Least D.Worst 35.What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?
A.Concentration plays a key role in study.
B.The length of time on study counts.
C.Getting work done quickly means everything.
D.Effective study approach is very important.

The most relaxing colors are generally believed to be cool shades such as green and
blue. 36 So we can often see these colors in hospitals, test centers, and television
stations, where people may want some help to ease their nerves and bad emotions.
Home designers note that people often describe rooms painted blue and green as
relaxing and comfortable. As a result, architects often use colors from the cool part of the
color circle in bedrooms and bathrooms. 37
Driving down a highway. you’ll notice that some signs consist of white letters on a
dark green background. 38 Another place where we see green used is in the
“green room” of theaters or television studios because nervous performers are quieted by
the color. This is also the reason why doctors wear green clothes in the operating room.
And prison cells often paint their walls green for the same effect.
39 Our eyes sense color using tiny sensors sensitive to the red light, the
green light or the blue light. However, generally they are the most sensitive to the green
light. Researchers think that this sensitivity to green objects might affect hormonal
production that in turn influences the mood. What’s more, recent studies have shown that
when a person looks at the green colored paper or is placed in a green room, their heart
rate drops, blood pressure lowers, and muscles relax. 40 So next time you’re
feeling nervous or upset, please try to focus your eyes on something green instead of red.
    A. There was research into colors in ancient times.
    B. And painters often use blues and greens on walls and ceilings.
    C. Different colors can cause different psychological reactions.
    D. Engineers determine such signs won’t get people’s eyes tired.
    E. In contrast, hot colors cause these to rise.
F.It is agreed that the two can make us feel calm, balanced and less emotional.
    G. Scientists have found some evidence for the magic power of green. 语言运用(共三节,满分 45 分)

    A Pleasant Surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was
a piano shop on the street along which I walked to school every day. Whenever I passed
the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the corner of the shop
window. How I had been dreaming day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression,
and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order
to save money, even on cold winter days,my father would walk seven miles every day to
get to work. So he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I
wanted to play that piano so much, buying it was an extravagance(奢侈)well beyond our
    family's income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the
piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment the piano had gone. I should not have
been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford. Tears filled my eyes
when I thought of not being able to see that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After
about an hour, I returned home.I had just entered into our house when I heard my mother
calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the
    dining-room.
I could not believe my eyes._____________________________________________

    Paragraph 1:
I could not believe my eyes. The beautiful piano I had been longing for was
standing there in front of me. Excitement and happiness filled my heart.I couldn't
help crying and tears streamed down my face. My mother approached me,saying
they knew the piano was the very thing I had dreamed about and my father had
tried everything possible to realize my dream. I was on the point of saying
    something when the door opened.
    Paragraph 2:
As soon as my father appeared,I hugged him tightly."Thank you,Dad!"I said.I
could see a big smile on his wrinkled face.Regardless of the bad weather,my father
had gone to work every day to make money.I could not imagine how much effort
he had made! My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had at last
earned enough to buy the piano.Only then did I realize that no gift could measure
    up to my father's love.
