During the first COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Kirby White struggled to get enough disposable gowns (一次性罩衣), so she and her colleague Dr. Nicole Lowe decided to act. In March2020, they developed a gown that could be laundered and reused, allowing them to keep seeing patients at their Bendigo’s clinic.
“The second COVID-19 wave made it impossible for anyone to purchase disposable gowns, says Kirby, who explains one reusable gown lasts as long as 130 single-use gowns. “It was important to have a reusable gown. We didn’t know how long the pandemic would last so we needed a sustainable solution.”
Two weeks later, Gowns for Doctors was created. Taking to social media, Kirby, 36, shared the initiative (新方案) in a local Facebook group. Overnight, hundreds of volunteers put up their hands to sew (缝), donate fabric and distribute the gowns. She was blown away by the unbelievable response. “We had400 emails overnight! “Kirby says. “It’s the spirit that allowed us to send out so many gowns to people in need. Months later, Gowns for Doctors still has a lot of gowns if medical staff are in need of them. We are continuing to help those who need them.”
The success of the initiative has now gone global, after a company contacted Kirby to create a Barbie doll (芭比娃娃) in her image, celebrating all the healthcare heroes globally. “Seeing my one-of-a-kind Barbie doll for the first time was a heart-skip moment. There were tears of joy. She looks just like me! ”
After hand-packing every order, Dr. White loves seeing happy healthcare workers wearing their donated gowns. “We’ve been sent photos of medical staff wearing their gowns with big smiles,” she says. “Everyone has been so appreciative; we are inundated with thank-you cards. It’s so nice to see them.”
    4. Why did Kirby start to make reusable gowns?
    A. There was a lack of gowns’ materials.
    B. The number of the patients was large.
    C. There weren’t enough disposable gowns.
    D. The quality of the disposable gowns was poor.
    5. What did the volunteers do for the initiative?
    A. They wrote a lot of emails. B. They helped make the gowns.

根据第一段“During the first COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Kirby White struggled to get enough disposable gowns (一次性罩衣), so she and her colleague Dr. Nicole Lowe decided to act. In March2020, they developed a gown that could be laundered and reused, allowing them to keep seeing patients at their Bendigo’s clinic. (在第一次COVID-19疫情期间,Kirby White医生难以获得足够的一次性罩衣,因此她和同事Nicole Lowe医生决定采取行动。2020年3月,他们开发了一款可以清洗和重复使用的罩衣,让他们可以继续在他们Bendigo的诊所看病)”可知,因为没有足够的一次性罩衣,所以Kirby开始制作可重复使用的罩衣。故选C项。
    【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Taking to social media, Kirby, 36, shared the initiative (新方案) in a local Facebook group. Overnight, hundreds of volunteers put up their hands to sew (缝), donate fabric and distribute the gowns. (在社交媒体上,36岁的Kirby在当地的一个Facebook群组中分享了这一新方案。一夜之间,数百名志愿者动手缝制、捐赠布料并分发罩衣)”可知,响应新方案,志愿者们帮助制作罩衣。故选B项。

Some Asian children are becoming increasingly fat, a new report says. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) joint report was released on Monday. The two agencies call for better regulation of junk food and a limit on sugary drinks for children. They also call for action against malnutrition (营养不良), because a lack of food has prevented children who live in poverty growing normally and healthily-or rather, hurts their development.
Dorothy Foote is a UNICEF regional nutritional specialist. She says the lack of food affects children’s height and development inside their bodies. But at the same time, the area is facing high levels of overweight children.
The main reason for the food problems, the report says, is that there is more junk food available, which does not provide nutrition. Another problem is drinks with high sugar or high trans-fat, but low nutritional value. Lack of physical activity is also part of the problem, the report adds.
Foote says this is seen in nutrition across the area. She says people lack knowledge about what is needed and normal for healthy children’s development.
The economic growth in the area has brought unhealthy products to rural areas. Poor and middle-class families buy them and do not make the right choices to use healthier foods instead. Poor feeding practices, especially for children younger than two, mean ongoing high levels of malnutrition.
The report says governments need to regulate the marketing of junk food and sugary drinks to children. It also calls for better feeding practices for infants and young children, and treatment for severely malnourished children. And it says the countries should work to reduce poverty and make sure that children stay in school.
    8. What does the report focus on?
    A. The economic growth in Asia.
    B. Asian countries’ development.
    C. The education in Asian rural areas.
    D. Some Asian children’s health problems.
    9. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph5 refer to?
    A. The right choices. B. The high levels.
    C. The unhealthy products. D. The healthier foods.
    10. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. The children’s situations. B. The report’s suggestions.
    C. The governments’ efforts. D. The problem’s causes.
    11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. The reasons for children’s being hungry
    B. How to stop children from being overweight?
    C. Why children in Asia become overweight?
    D. Asian children face malnutrition or fatness
D 9. C 10. B 11. D

由文章第一段“Some Asian children are becoming increasingly fat, a new report says. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) joint report was released on Monday. The two agencies call for better regulation of junk food and a limit on sugary drinks for children. They also call for action against malnutrition, because a lack of food has prevented children who live in poverty growing normally and healthily-or rather, hurts their development. (一份新报告称,一些亚洲儿童变得越来越胖。联合国儿童基金会和世界卫生组织的联合报告于周一发布。这两个机构呼吁更好地监管垃圾食品,并限制儿童含糖饮料。他们还呼吁采取行动消除营养不良,因为缺乏食物使生活在贫困中的儿童无法正常、健康地成长,或者更确切地说,损害了他们的发展)”可知,报告关注的是一些亚洲儿童的健康问题。故选D项。

    【9题详解】
词义猜测题。由第五段第一句“The economic growth in the area has brought unhealthy products to rural areas. (该地区的经济增长给农村地区带来了不健康的产品)”可知,them指代的是前文提及的不健康的食品,即一些贫穷或中产阶级的家庭购买这些不健康的食品,而不是选择更健康的食品。故选C项。

    【10题详解】
主旨大意题。由最后一段“The report says governments need to regulate the marketing of junk food and sugary drinks to children. It also calls for better feeding practices for infants and young children, and treatment for severely malnourished children. And it says the countries should work to reduce poverty and make sure that children stay in school. (报告称,政府需要监管向儿童销售垃圾食品和含糖饮料。它还呼吁为婴儿和幼儿提供更好的喂养方法,并对严重营养不良的儿童进行治疗。它说,各国应该努力减少贫困,并确保儿童留在学校)”可知,最后一段主要呼吁政府采取一些措施。故选B项。

    【11题详解】

    D
If we continue at our current production rate, the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Today, there is a garbage island three times the size of France floating in the Pacific Ocean. However, in her presentation last week, Alexandra Cousteau, a world-renowned environmental advocate, offered a small sign of hope.
Cousteau’s talk, titled “Telling the Story of Our Water Planet: Innovation in Filmmaking and Social Media to Effect Environmental Change”, focused on using innovation and technology to create environmental solutions with a focus on restoration rather than preservation. She described our current approach to conservation as a “zero-sum game” between environmentalists and economists. An endangered species habitat can either be protected or developed; a polluted stream can either be cleaned or left to deteriorate (恶化). Both teams are on the defensive, yet playing a losing game.
In the 1970s, the environmentalist movement focused on conservation efforts. Cousteau said, “It was an effective tool then when plastics were young. But we have lost 50 % of our oceanic ecosystems since 1950. Conservation is no longer enough. “Cousteau urges us to create biological richness for the creatures still living in the sea.
Throughout her speech, Cousteau discussed the challenges facing our oceans and the solutions lying at our fingertips. She explained the power of seaweed farming to sequester (隔离) carbon. She talked of 3 D printing coral reefs rather than painstakingly growing. Most of all, she focused on the youths and our amazing power for driving practical change.
Cousteau said, however, there are challenges in the mission. Ocean conservation has inequalities (不平等) in its approach and implementation. Though the science exists, lawmakers need to employ these solutions efficiently and equitably, which is far easier said than done. Despite these obstacles, Cousteau’s message gave hope.
Modern environmentalism is no longer the work of a few, but the work of many dedicated individuals with a common vision for change. Together, we can regain hope and rebuild our oceans.
    12. Why is the World Economic Forum’s prediction mentioned?
    A. To share environmental solutions.
    B. To tell the content of Cousteau’s talk.
    C. To show the serious result of oceanic garbage.
    D. To show our current dangerous living condition.
    13. What does Cousteau want to express through the “zero-sum game”?
    A. The failure of protecting the environment.
    B. People’s awareness of protecting the Earth.
    C. The success of the environmentalist movement.
    D. People’s creative solution to protecting the Earth.
14 What does Cousteau think of the environmentalist movement in the 1970s?
    A. It should be continued.
    B. It should be prevented now.
    C. It was useful for biological richness.
    D. It was good but then had little effect.
    15. What can we know about Cousteau from the text?
    A. Her goal is difficult to achieve.
    B. Her focus on the youths’ efforts is wrong.
    C. She will rebuild the ocean by herself in the future.
    D. She believes in the present ways to protect the ocean.
C 13. A 14. D 15. A
由文章第一段前两句“If we continue at our current production rate, the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Today, there is a garbage island three times the size of France floating in the Pacific Ocean. (如果我们继续保持目前的生产速度,世界经济论坛预测,到2050年,海洋中的塑料将比鱼类更多。今天,有一个三倍于法国大小的垃圾岛漂浮在太平洋上。)”可知,文章提及the World Economic Forum’s prediction是为了引出本篇文章的主题,海洋当中的塑料问题很严重。故选C项。

    【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段的二三两句“She described our current approach to conservation as a “zero-sum game” between environmentalists and economists. An endangered species habitat can either be protected or developed; a polluted stream can either be cleaned or left to deteriorate. Both teams are on the defensive, yet playing a losing game. (她将我们目前的保护方法描述为环保主义者和经济学家之间的“零和游戏”。濒危物种的栖息地可以受到保护或开发;受污染的溪流可以被清理,也可以让它们变质。两支球队都在防守,但正在打一场失败的比赛。)”可知,提及zero-sum game是为了说明这是一场失败的比赛。故选A项。

由文章第三段“In the 1970s, the environmentalist movement focused on conservation efforts. Cousteau said, “It was an effective tool then when plastics were young. But we have lost 5o% of our oceanic ecosystems since 1950. Conservation is no longer enough. “Cousteau urges us to create biological richness for the creatures still living in the sea. (在20世纪70年代,环保运动专注于保护工作。Cousteau说:“当塑料还年轻的时候,这是一个有效的工具。但自1950年以来,我们已经失去了5%的海洋生态系统。保护已经不够了。“库斯托敦促我们为仍然生活在海洋中的生物创造生物丰富的生物丰富性。)”可知,Cousteau 认为在20世纪70年代的环保运动有效但现在保护已经不够了。故选D项。

    【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Cousteau said, however, there are challenges in the mission. Ocean conservation has inequalities in its approach and implementation. Though the science exists, lawmakers need to employ these solutions efficiently and equitably, which is far easier said than done. Despite these obstacles, Cousteau’s message gave hope.(然而,库斯托说,特派团存在挑战。海洋保护在方法和实施方面存在不平等。虽然科学存在,但立法者需要高效和公平地使用这些解决方案,这说起来容易做起来难。尽管存在这些障碍,库斯托的信息还是带来了希望。)”可知,她的想法说起来容易做起来难,即比较难实现。故选A项。

根据前文“As a way to connect the mind, body and spirit, now, yoga is practiced or celebrated all over the world by adults and teens.(作为一种连接思想、身体和精神的方式,现在,瑜伽被世界各地的成年人和青少年练习或推崇)”以及后文“How can yoga actually benefit children in the long run?(从长远来看,瑜伽是如何让孩子受益的呢?)”可知,前文没有提及孩子做瑜伽,所以孩子应在空处提出,所以B项“It is also practiced by young children.(小孩子也会练习)”符合文意。故选B项。
根据本段小标题“It helps with self-control.(它有助于自我控制)”以及前句“Studies show that kids who routinely practice yoga are also less impulsive.(研究表明,经常练习瑜伽的孩子也不那么冲动)”可知,空处位于本段段尾,应是对本段的总结或者补充说明,所以F项“They also have more patience while waiting for positive rewards.(他们在等待积极回报时也有更多的耐心)”是对前一句的补充说明,符合文意。故选F项。
根据本段小标题“It reduces stress and anxiety.(减少压力和焦虑)”以及后文“These techniques help kids comfort their minds, which in turn comforts their bodies, so yoga is a great tool for kids to use to work through their stress and anxiety.(这些技巧帮助孩子们安抚他们的心灵,进而安抚他们的身体,所以瑜伽是孩子们用来克服压力和焦虑的好工具)”可知,本段主要讲瑜伽帮助孩子减少压力,后句讲了技巧的结果,所以空处应讲具体的技巧,所以G项“Yoga helps children practice breathing techniques to calm anxious nerves.(瑜伽帮助孩子们练习呼吸技巧来舒缓焦虑的神经)”符合文意。
可知,E项“Yoga lets children focus on one manageable task at a time.(瑜伽让孩子们一次只专注于一件容易完成的任务)”是对前句的补充说明,符合文意。故选E项。
分析设空,可知空处是下文的小标题,小标题是对下文的高度总结,根据后文“Another incredible benefit of yoga is that regular practice helps children learn to believe in themselves and their own capabilities. They will feel proud of themselves when they master a new move and can demonstrate all the different poses that they know.(瑜伽的另一个不可思议的好处是,经常练习可以帮助孩子们学会相信自己和自己的能力。当他们掌握了一个新动作,并能展示他们所知道的所有不同的姿势时,他们会为自己感到自豪)”可知,本段是在讲述瑜伽能提高孩子的自信,所以C项“It boosts self-respect and confidence.(增强自尊和自信)”符合文意。故选C项。

Since I was a young boy, I have had a dream to get a closer to understanding bear’s life in the wild. I also know getting close to a bear in the wild is amazing but also full of danger.
Bears should be contacted closely in a safe distance. So when I was in senior high school, my father decided to go camping at a research camp outside “the bear of the world”— the town of Nigeria.
That day, once we arrived the destination, we put up the tent and took out our food, and most importantly, we set up our camera and got ready for getting close to the bear through taking photographs. At that time, a male bear which was surrounded by a high, wire fence followed his nose to our camp, met us and stared at our food. It seemed that it was hungry and attracted by our food.
Frightened, we knew some bear defense actions. One is that we can climb up quickly into a tree and hide ourselves in the branches. Another is that once you must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear come up and smell you all over, you hold your breath, and pretend to be dead as much as you could. The bear will soon leave you, for it is said a bear will not touch a dead body. So we kept taking some photographs.
Suddenly, the bear yelled at us and kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子). Even worse, another bear appeared and tried to tear down the fence. Of course, making the best of this close encounter, I took some pictures of the bear with scary.
My father feared the fence wouldn’t last through 25 more minutes of the bears, punishment So he called the camp managers for help. Unluckily, they would not arrive until half an hour. They suggested we use pepper spray (胡椒喷雾剂) which can burn the bears, eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. What was worse, we didn’t bring it.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few minutes later, my father looked at the big tree beside us. “Let’s climb up quickly into the big tree,” my father said. So I first climbed up into the tree with my camera and then my father, we hid ourselves in the branches. And the bears yelled at us and kept trying to tear down the fence with their paws. 25 minutes later, the fence was torn down and the bears were going around under the tree. Luckily, we were safe and awaited the camp managers’ coming. During the time, we took some wonderful photos.
Half an hour later, the camp managers with protection equipment arrived. They asked us not to move. We felt good at the moment. They wore professional clothes and protection equipment and approached them carefully, spraying their face with pepper spray. The bears ran to the broken fence and disappeared in the forest. Finally, we climbed down from the big tree and blessed ourselves from danger with the camp managers’ help. What a challenging and unforgettable experience and what meaningful photos about the bear’s life!
