Growing up, Danielle Belleny was always outdoors, picking up insects and investigating the animal world on her own. She hadn’t yet heard of wildlife biology, but that’s what she was learning about. She wanted to be a vet, a person who can treat sick or injured animals, at first. She said, “I always knew I wanted to work with animals, and as a kid, that was the only job I knew where I could do that. ’’ But when Belleny was in college, her dad advised her to learn wildlife biology instead of veterinary.
Later, Belleny started working on research projects. One project involved placing trackers on a bird called the northern bobwhite. For another, she spent time herding goats, as away to protect a grass habitat for endangered box turtles (龟) without hurting them.
Belleny’s working at Plateau Land & Wildlife Management. “In the mornings, I’m usually out the door before sunrise,” she says. She surveys birds, keeping track of different species. And she searches for signs of what other animals in the area are doing. Around lunchtime, she’ll return home and write up a report. In the afternoon, she leaves for another site visit. Landowners can request her services. She advises people on how to protect the wildlife that lives on their farm. Her work takes her all around Texas.
Outside of work, young Belleny has been bird-watching for seven years. Her first book This Is a Book for People Who Love Birds was published in May, 2022. Now she’s working on a children’s book about birding, which is scheduled to come out in fall 2023. As it traveled through the Swiss Alps,a 1.9-kilometer-long locomotive(机车) set the record for the world’s longest passenger train.
Trains have been running in Switzerland for 175 years. In late October, 2022, a festival was held to celebrate that fact. As part of the celebration, the Rhaetian Railway company decided to set the record. It wound through tunnels, mountains and valleys along the Albula Line attracting so many tourists every year, which was recognized as a protected site by UNESCO World Heritage in 2008.
The locomotive was made up of electric trains connected to each other. Each of those had four cars, which brought the train’s total to 100 cars. The trip covered about 25 kilometers and took a little over an hour. In that time, the record-setting train passed over 48 bridges and stably went through 22 tunnels.
Locals who love taking trains, train lovers and members of the press stayed at the top of the hills or in scenic valleys to watch the train make its leisurely(慢悠悠的) trip. At the festival, 3,000 ticket holders gathered in the village of Berglin and followed the journey through a live video feed(信息推送).
To prepare for the journey, Swiss engineers had been conducting trial runs for months, testing communication and safety facility to ensure a successful trip. The train took seven drivers and 21 other specially trained workers to run it. All parts of the train had to be kept running at exactly the same speed. To help the drivers communicate with each other, even when they were deep inside tunnels, making their way, the railway set up a special phone system.
“Finally, we have achieved this world record,’’ says railway director Renato Fasciati. “Not only did we have a wonderful railway festival here in Bergun, but we were able to present ourselves around the world as an amazing and creative mountain railway.”
8、Why did the company set the record for the world’s longest passenger train?
    A. To honor a big celebration. B. To call for green travel.
    C. To promote Swiss tourism. D. To protect the Albula Line.
9、What can we learn about the world’s longest passenger train?
    A. It aimed to deliver local people. B. It attracted a number of watchers.

Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes has very high levels of antioxidants(AOS,抗氧化剂).
AOS are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes(糖尿病). But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO Martin added two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon. Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
12、Why did Martin experiment on purple tomatoes?
    A. They are available easily. B. They have a special color.
    C. They don’t have enough AOS. D. They can stop some diseases.
13、What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice?
    A. Favorable. B. Unclear. C. Unsupportive. D. Doubtful.
14、What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. The environment affects GMO foods.
    B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
    C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
    D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
15、What’s the suitable title for the text?
    A. Different DNA Can Benefit Plant Growth
    B. Scientists Are Changing DNA of Tomatoes
    C. Tomatoes with Changed DNA Are Approved
    D. Human Health Depends on Changed DNA

To celebrate Fireman’s Day, a town’s special school for orphans(孤儿) held a special meet and greet with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses and buildings.
The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role. “Everybody has to be in the right place at the right time,’’ he explained to the children.
Captain Joshua suffered a noticeable burn mark above one of his eyes while fighting against the forest fire. A young boy named David approached Joshua, who noticed that the young boy had a birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark. David had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first. David turned to his teacher, Mrs. Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs-up.
“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which was why he wanted to learn as much as possible. Mrs. Humphries told the captain, “The reason why David is so interested in firemen is that a dangerous fire took his parents from him at a young age.” Hearing this, Joshua decided that the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.
That Saturday morning, Joshua showed Mrs. Humphries and David around the fire department. David was smiling from ear to ear. The three had hot dogs at the station. “I want to be a fireman to save many lives so that children don’t have to be sad. I want to be just like you when I grow up,” David said to Jonathan before saying goodbye to him.

本空前面句子中的“about 120 publishers presented more than 20,000 books”与本空后面句子中的“about 100 reading activities were held”在意义上是并列关系。
as a result of表示“由于”,属于固定短语。
分析句意可知,这里指“this year’s book fair”与“the one held in 2020”相比较。
分析句子结构可 知,本句的主干部分是“ the event ...attracted many relevant people at home and abroad”。 本空前面是“he core value of”,因此,这里填which指代 “ the event”,引导定语从句。
+ be+形容词+to do sth.

22 years later' after many years of retirement, Jonathan encountered a big fire. The electrical fire broke out in the kitchen while he was cooking. He and his wife Sarah were trapped in the fire while trying to escape. Luckily, their fire alarm had already gone off. In less than a couple of minutes, firefighters arrived and helped them. “Help! Help!” Jonathan shouted as the firemen entered their house. Firemen carried Jonathan and Sarah out of the burning house. They laid them down in the front yard to receive medical treatment.
Before the firemen left, Jonathan grabbed a man with a birthmark above one of his eyes. “D—David, is that you?” he asked as trying to catch his breath. Noticing Jonathan’s burn mark, David removed his hat and replied, “Captain Jonathan?!” The two shared a long hug tearfully. Just like David promised years ago, he achieved his dream of becoming a firefighter and saving lives. “David. Thank you for saving our lives. It’s just like you said!” Jonathan said. “No, it’s just like you said. Everybody has to be in the right place at the right time,” David replied with a smile.
