What impresses yu mst when yu think back t yur years at university? Fr me, it is my first Greek
philsphy class frm Dr. Degenaar at Stellenbsch University.
Dr. Degenaar came int the lecture rm n the first Friday mrning f the term and asked us t write dwn
ur wn definitin f the “sul”. Here was the “teacher” asking us what we thught — it was an almst literally
mind-blwing experience. He was nt telling us what he thught but asking us hw we saw smething. The
fllwing discussin was interesting. That was my first experience f real learning in a classrm.
Almst 50 years have passed since that experience. Of the ther lecturers wh “taught” me during that year, I
remember they “taught” me the histry f Greek philsphy, but I remember little f that histry and abslutely
nthing f thse lecturers. And mst f what I remember abut Greek philsphy is what I learned in Dr.
Degenaar’s class, fr my wn interest.
I tk further curses with Dr. Degenaar in the fllwing years. Like the first class, there was little “lecturing”
at us, but far mre invlvement f us all in a prcess f mutual (共同的) discvery in which we learned a lt abut
each ther and the imprtant issues f the day. The excitement f discvery stays with me. Then it tk me almst
anther 20 years t get a deeper understanding f what had happened in that lecture hall: experiential learning.
Traditinally, learners have been seen as “empty cntainers” waiting t be “filled” with learning given them
by the teacher. The learner is thus dependent n the teacher fr what t think and hw t think. Cmpliance (遵从)
is rewarded and s independent and riginal thinking is nt develped.
In cntrast, in experiential learning, the learner is encuraged t think fr himself / herself, nt t repeat the
thught patterns f the teacher. The learning happens nt because f what a “teacher” r “lecturer” says but because
f what the learner des. In this sense, I think this is the best way t learn and everyne shuld adpt it and learn
    frm it.

    24. What did the authr think f his first Greek philsphy class?
    A. Amazing. B. Cnfusing. C.Bring. D. Challenging.

Wrldwide, the quantity and diversity f insects are decreasing: scientists have reprted mre and mre
evidence fr this in recent years. Researchers we the decrease in insect numbers n the ne hand t the increase in
large mnculture (单一栽培), but als cite climate change with increased temperatures and drught as a cause.
Hwever, these findings seem t have their defects, says animal eclgist Prfessr Jrg Muller. Amng ther
things, thse studies dn’t represent the diversity f insect species well enugh r nly cnsider shrt perids f
    time and small areas.
A research team nw study further and they find anther key factr in the verall decreasing f insects.
During their study, they placed traps t cllect flying, crawling (爬行) and jumping insects in the spring f 2019 in
a wide range f places. These traps were lcated at 179 sites, frm the lwlands t elevatins (海拔) abve 1,100
meters in the Bavarian Frest and the Alps. They were lcated in frests, n grasslands and fields as well as in
ppulated areas, set in semi-natural, agricultural and urban landscapes. The researchers emptied the traps every 14
days fr an entire vegetatin (植物) perid. They determined the quantity f the insects caught and identified the
    individual species using DNA sequencing.
Interestingly, temperature at the lcal site as well as annual temperature has nly psitive effects n the
quantity and diversity f insect ppulatins. The frm f land use, n the ther hand has different effects n
quantity and diversity. “We bserved the largest difference in insect quantity between semi-natural and urban
envirnments. In the city, the quantity was 42 percent lwer. Insect diversity was 29 percent lwer in agricultural
envirnments cmpared t semi-natural habitats. There were even 56 percent fewer endangered species in
agricultural areas,” says Uhler, first authr f the study.
“These different patterns f quantity and species diversity are an imprtant warning sign fr researchers,”
summarizes Uhler. Fr insect mnitring, ne shuld nt cnclude that a decrease in quantity als means a decrease
in species diversity. Based n the new findings, researchers stressed the imprtance f having green spaces in cities
and twns. Meanwhile, existing agri-envirnmental plans shuld be further expanded t imprve bidiversity.
    28. What des “defects” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Values. B. Faults. C. Risks. D. Effects.
    29. What did researchers fcus n when designing the experiment?
    4
    A. The fd surces fr the insects. B. The ptential threat t insects.
C.The verall health f the insects. D. The variety f the insects.
    30. Which f the fllwing leads t the increase f insects accrding t the new study?
A.The lcal temperature. B. The mre land use.
C.The changes in habitats. D. The rise in agricultural areas.
    31. What d researchers encurage us t d t prtect insects?
    A. Replace the agricultural fields with parks.
    B. Prvide mre man-made habitats fr them.
    C. Pay attentin t insects’ quantity rather than their diversity.
    D. Create mre green spaces in urban envirnments.

Our brain can map ur surrundings, which is called spatial memry — ur ability t remember certain
lcatins. New findings suggest ne majr feature f ur spatial recall is efficiently lcating energy-rich fd. The
study’s authrs believe spatial memry ensured that ur hunter-gatherer ancestrs culd first identify the lcatin f
reliable nutritin, giving them an evlutinary (进化的) leg up.
In the study, researchers bserved 512 participants fllw a fixed path thrugh a rm where either eight fd
samples (样本) r eight fd-scented cttn pads (垫子) were placed in different lcatins. When the participants
apprached a sample, they wuld taste the fd r smell the cttn and rate hw much they liked it. Fur f the
fd samples were high-calrie, including cakes and ptat chips, and the ther fur, including cherry tmates and
    apples, were lw in calries.
After the taste test, the participants were asked t identify the lcatin f each sample n a map f the rm.
They were nearly 30% mre accurate in mapping the high-calrie samples versus the lw-calrie nes. And they
were als 243% mre accurate when presented with actual fds, as ppsed t the fd smells.
The study shws that thse with a better memry fr where high-calrie fd resurces wuld be available
were likely t have a survival r fitness advantage. Memry has evlved s that we can remember things that aid
ur survival. Therefre, it’s unsurprising that we remember infrmatin abut fitness particularly well. And that
    includes the high-calrie cntent.
We tend t think that humans have lst the sharp sense f smell seen in many ther wild animals in favr f
sharp eyesight. And t a large degree, we humans have develped that way. But the new findings highlight the ften
underestimated ability f humans’ sense f smell.
One disadvantage f ur spatial skills is ur mdern taste fr junk fd. With a less than 30-year lifespan (寿
命), diseases such as diabetes weren’t a cncern fr ur ancestrs. But in tday’s wrld, this is a prblem when
we’re still walking arund with “a Stne Age brain”. Nw ur taste fr sweet and fat makes us reach fr sugar ver
vegetables and cntributes t glbal besity (肥胖).
    32. What can we learn abut spatial memry?
    A. It has quite limited functins.
    B. It cntributed t human beings’ evlutin.
    C. It makes us feel energetic and healthy.
    D. It started frm ur ancestrs’ hunting activities.
    33. Which f the fllwing might the participants f the study map best?
    A.Pictures f ptates.
    B. Fresh apples.
    C. French fries.
    D. Cttn pads with sweet smells.
    5
    34. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. Our mind fails t match current fd-rich circumstances.
    B. Our spatial skills functin unsatisfactrily nwadays.
    C. Our brain evlves mre slwly than ur taste fr fd.
D.Our ancestrs were unlikely t fall ill.
    35. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Mdern peple, simple brains
    B. Humans’ excellent memry fr high-calrie fds
    C. Efficient memry, reliable nutritin
    D. The evlutin f humans’ spatial memry
