An 11-year-old boy has become a hero since his quick thinking saved two lives. Davyon Johnson helped save a choking classmate and a woman attempting to escape a fire. On Dec. 8, 2021 the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department honored Johnson for his heroics at a meeting. At the event, Undersheriff Greg Martin gave the sixth-grader a certificate naming him an honorary deputy for the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office. “We are all so proud of you, Johnson!!” wrote the sheriff’s office in a post on Facebook on Dec. 14, 2021.
The Muskogee Public Schools recognized Davyon Johnson during the meeting Tuesday. Principal Latricia Dawkins considered Johnson a hero in an interview. “He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. Johnson immediately ran to the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Dawkins said, “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same.
Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there. After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. “She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said.
LaToya, the boy’s mother, said, “I don’t feel surprised at my son’s actions. I’m just a proud mom.”

Scott Edwards paused his cross-country bike trip when he saw a flash of black, white and red. It was a red-headed woodpecker (啄木鸟). He saw their black and white wings while riding. He was phoning to his friend from his tent in Illinois later that night. “I got my first good look today. I hadn’t seen the red head until that day, so was very excited,” he said.
Edwards is a bird researcher at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Over this past summer, he rode across the United States. In some degree, he did go to see the country. But he also used the trip to do some serious bird-watching, which is something he’s been doing for more than 40 years.
When he was growing up in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City, there were lots of trees. When he was 9 or 10, a neighbor took him bird-watching. Edwards has been doing it ever since. But finding those birds is getting more difficult. “The number of birds is dying down,” he says. And Edwards is hardly the only one to notice it, Scientists around the world have been finding the same thing. A 2018 study by Bird Life International concluded that birds around the world are in trouble. There are about 1,000 species of birds. Four in every 10 species of them are decreasing in number, the study found. That’s true for all kinds of birds living in all types of habitats.
Some birds, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker and California condor, are specially endangered. Only a few members of these species remain in the wild. Others are often seen at backyard gardens. But even common birds are less common than they were just 50 years ago. And that’s now true almost everywhere.
8. Why did Edwards feel excited?
A. He found his tent.
B. He took a bike trip.
C. He got his first tent.
D. He saw a woodpecker.
9. What has Edwards been doing for many years?
A. Traveling around the United States. B. Going on a trip.
C. Doing bird-watching. D. Studying at Harvard University.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Birds are in crisis.
B. The interest of Edwards is meaningful.
C. Birds try to adapt to new habitats.
D. The childhood of Edwards is wonderful.
11. What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A. Humans should save birds by raising them in gardens.
B. Humans should protect birds from dying out.
C. Humans should set up a large habitat for birds.
D. Humans should know more about birds’ habitats.
D 9. C 10. A 11. B

Others are often seen at backyard gardens. But even common birds are less common than they were just 50 years ago. And that’s now true almost everywhere.(一些鸟类,如红冠啄木鸟和加州秃鹰,是特别濒危的。

Besides, 95 percent of rare and endangered plants in South China will be effectively protected, thus to provide plant resources for green development.
China is one of the countries in the world with the richest biodiversity, having more than 37, 000 known species of higher plants, accounting for about one tenth of the world’s total.
The South China National Botanical Garden, together with the national botanical garden in Beijing, has formed a system of collection and complete the retention of wild plant groups, which is helpful to maintain the country’s plant diversity.

根据第三段第二句“The garden has three research centers, two national-level field stations and three key laboratories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. ”(园区内设有三个研究中心、两个国家级实验站和三个中国科学院重点实验室。)可推断出,该植物园配备精良。故选A。
根据倒数第三段“Besides, 95 percent of rare and endangered plants in South China will be effectively protected, thus to provide plant resources for green development.”(此外,华南地区95% 的珍稀濒危植物将得到有效保护,为绿色发展提供植物资源。
根据第三段第一句“The South China National Botanical Garden aims to strengthen the conservation, scientific research and knowledge broadcasting of tropical (热带的) and subtropical (亚热带的) plants.”(华南国家植物园旨在加强热带及亚热带植物的保护、科学研究及知识广播。)
通读全文可知,文章第一段“China’s second national botanical (植物学的) garden, South China National Botanical Garden, was set up in Guangzhou on July 11th, 2022.”(2022年7月11日,中国第二国家植物园——华南国家植物园在广州成立。)

They will feel proud of themselves when they master a new move and can demonstrate all the different poses that they know.(瑜伽的另一个不可思议的好处是,经常练习可以帮助孩子们学会相信自己和自己的能力。

Andy rode slowly on his way to school, daydreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the sky. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm (一大群) of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and they seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding with great speed but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings (蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to lie in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson’s home. “Bees don’t like smoke,” he thought. “They couldn’t get into the house.” Andy raced towards the Nelson’s house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon. But he tried his best to keep calm so that he could come up with an idea to escape from the dangerous situation. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam which was often used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden.

Without hesitation, Andy jumped off his bike and dived into the cool water. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mr. Nelson happened to be home and seeing the tired and wet boy, the owner took him inside. After knowing what Andy had experienced, he praised the boy and rang his mother.
In no time, his mother appeared in front of him. Seeing Andy, his mother anxiously asked whether he was injured. Andy answered it was the dam that saved him. His mother laughed with relief and said he really needed that fishing break to help him recover. But Andy did not hear her. He was thinking his father’s words “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic.” And he realized how important it was to listen to parents.
