II. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: Read the following passage and fill in each blank with the proper form of the verbs given in brackets.
Surviving in the Wilderness
Many people enjoy travelling through wild and deserted landscapes but few expect to end up in a genuine survival situation. The unexpected occasionally ___1___(happen), however, so you should be prepared. Imagine finding ___2___ in the middle of a wilderness with a broken-down jeep and hardly any food and water. What should your priorities be? Should you stay with your vehicle and hope ___3___(rescue)? Or should you search for civilization and risk getting even more lost? Should you spend time searching for water or food first? Or should you postpone worrying about food and water ___4___ you have managed to find or build a shelter? If you are not sure, keep reading—this article could save your life!
Priority 1 Shelter
Do not put off ___5___(make) a shelter—it should be your first priority. Try enlarging an existing, natural shelter, such as a hole in the ground below a(n) ___6___ (fall) tree. If you happen to be near a rocky coast, build a shelter and cover it with wood from the beach. If you are on the move, stop to build your shelter while it is still light.
Priority 2 Water
If you fail to find water, you will only survive for about three days (whereas you can survive for weeks without food). If there is no rain, try walking through vegetation early in the morning to collect moisture in clothing. Avoid drinking water___7___looks or smells bad.
Priority 3 Fire
Fire has many uses. It makes food more appetizing. If you can’t face eating raw worms, boil them in water to make a nourishing soup! Fire protects ___8___ dangerous animals, since many will not dare to approach it. And you can also use it for signaling to rescuers—___9___ they give up looking for you!
Priority 4 Food
It is quite easy to get food in the wild, if you know where to look. Many survival books suggest eating a small amount of unknown plants to test ____10____ they are poisonous. However, we do not recommend to do this, since some plants are so poisonous that even a very small amount can cause serious health problems.
1. happens
2. yourself/yourselves
3. to be rescued
4. until 5. making
6. fallen 7. that/which
8. against 9. before
10. whether/if
故填yourself/yourselves。
put off doing sth.
故填that/which。
故填against。
故填if/whether。
III. Vocabulary
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Most people do not realize that dreams take up about 25% of the night’s sleep, and each dream period lasts from five to 20 minutes. These is no doubt that dreams play an important role in our lives. If they can be correctly ___11___ — and that is a big “if” — we can come to understand ourselves better. Here, we look at three common dreams and what they ___12___ symbolize.
Dream 1: I can see their laughing faces. laughing at me. But they aren’t as smart. If they were, they’d be up here flying with me!
This dream has both positive and negative ___13___ . On the positive side, the dream may express a strong desire to travel and get away from everyday routine. It may also symbolize a powerful desire to achieve. On the other hand, this dream can mean the person has a problem or is afraid of something and they wish to escape. The dream could represent a(n) ___14___ complex, which the dreamer attempts to escape from by literally and ___15___ putting themselves up above others.
Dream 2: I’m moving fast now, but it’s still behind me. Doesn’t matter how fast I go, I still can’t escape.
Although this is a traditional symbol of health and ___16___ like the first one, it too can suggest the dreamer is trying to escape from danger. Usually, fear is the ___17___ emotion. By running hard, the dreamer can possibly escape the threat. However, they can also stop moving. This makes the fear even more terrifying. One possible interpretation suggests that the person is under pressure in their everyday life.
Dream 3: I’m sweating and my heart is beating. I’m trapped, trapped in my own bed.
This symbol is ___18___ with fear and embarrassment: suddenly the dreamer loses all power of movement. They try hard to move their arms and legs, but they simply cannot. Frozen in a terrifying situation with no escape, they become more and more terrified as the ___19___ go by. Another ___20___ context for this dream is failing to do something in public, often something that you are normally very good at, such as your job. Not only is this extremely embarrassing, but it also shows a deep-seated fear of losing a job and a livelihood.

Directions: For each blank in the following passage, there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
A hundred years ago, the largest city in the world was London, with a population of 6.5 million. Today it is beaten by Tokyo. With barely a quarter the population of London a century ago, the Tokyo metropolitan area has since ___21___ to 34 million, promoting it to first place in the global city league table. Tokyo’s phenomenal growth is largely due to a single factor: migration from the countryside to the city.
This ___22___ migration can now be seen in scores of cities around the globe. And it has brought us to a crucial moment in human history. In 1990, most people lived in the countryside, with a little over 10 percent of the world’s population living in ___23___. From next year, the UN Population Division predicts that for the first time in history, more people will live in cities than in the country, and the biggest growth will be in “mega-cities,” with populations over 10 million.
The ___24___ of mega-cities - there are now 20 in total - has brought with it huge environmental and social problems. Cities occupy just two percent of the land surface of the Earth but consume three-quarters of the resources that are used up each year. Their residents are making ruinous ___25___ on soils and water supplies for food and on forests for wood and paper.
___26___ the world’s population to the countryside isn’t an option. Dividing up the planet into plots of land on which we could all survive self-sufficiently would create its own natural disasters, not to mention being highly unlikely to ever ___27___. If we are to protect what is left of nature, and meet the demand to improve the quality of living for the world’s developing nations, a new form of city living is the only option. ___28___, governments, planners, architects, and engineers are beginning to wake up to this idea, and are dreaming up new ways to green the mega-cities. Their approaches ___29___ two main principles: recycle whatever possible and remove as many cars as possible. So as well as developing energy-efficient buildings, emphasis is being placed on increasing the use of ___30___ and redesigning how cities are organized to integrate work and living areas into a single neighborhood, rather than ___31___ cities into residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
Planners and architects now agree that to improve the social and environmental condition of cities the top ___32___ is to cut car use. They say zero-emission cars running on electricity or burning hydrogen are not ___33___. What is needed is a wholesale rethink of how new cities are laid out — and how existing ones expand — to ___34___ the need for cars in the first place. One way of achieving this is to build cities with multiple centers where people live ___35___ their work in high-rise blocks that are also near public transport hubs. In parts of the world this is already taking place.

V. Reading
Directions: Read the following two passage. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
It’s not always easy for wealthy people to decide who (or what) to leave their money to when they die and quite a few of them make some very unusual choices.
Due to her vast wealth, New York hotelier Leona Heimsley was able to leave $12 m to her dog, Trouble. The money for the dog’s welfare was left in the hands of Leona’s brother, Alvin Rosenthal. He also inherited money from his sister, but amazingly he received $2m less than the dog! Leona isn’t an exception. According to the Mail Online newspaper, there are roughly 1.5 million people in the UK along who plan to leave money to their pets. However, there are other extremely rich people who have very different ideas about who they should leave their money to.
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, is rumoured to be worth over $54b and he’s decided to leave the vast majority of this fortune to charitable causes. Of course, like most other parents, he could have chosen to leave his money to his children, but he hasn’t. When talking about his children’s inheritance he said, “It will be a minuscule portion of my wealth. It will mean they have to find their own way. They will be given an unbelievable education and that will be paid for. And certainly anything related to health issues we will take care of. But in terms of their income, they will have to pick a job they like and go to work.
Anita Roddick (1942-2007), founder of The Body Shop, also decided that she didn’t need to leave her money to her two daughters because they would be fine without it. She felt there were too many people in the world who had nothing and who needed this money far more than they did. She once told reporters that she was enjoying her money because whenever she wanted to, she could give away millions of pounds to human rights and environmental groups. Her fortune was said to be somewhere in the region of $50m. Some people thought she should have left at least some of that money to her children — she needn’t have given it all away. But that’s just what she did. ”I told my kids they would not inherit one penny,“ she said, and to their great credit Anita’s daughters supported their mother’s decision. Many people would have reacted very differently.

A. the population of the UK is smaller than other countries’
B. pets in the UK are luckier than those in other places

Posting 1. I haven’t got any formal qualifications - Will this stop me getting a good job?
I’ve been doing the same job for ten years, but it’s going nowhere. I’m bored and poorly paid, and the managers who are assigning jobs to me to do are much younger than me.
I want to get a better job, but I won’t be able to, because I haven’t got a degree. It seems really unfair.

My job involves controlling budgets and making decisions, and the work is challenging and enjoyable. We get on very well in the office and outside. Any advice?

You’re running late for work and you can’t find your keys: What’s really annoying is that in your search, you pick up and move them without realizing. This may be because the brain systems involved in the task are working at different speeds, with the system responsible for perception(感知)unable to keep pace.
So says Grayden Solman and his colleagues at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. To investigate how we search, Solman’s team created a simple computer-based task that involved searching through a pile of colored shapes on a computer screen. Volunteers were instructed to find a specific shapes as quickly as possible, while the computer monitored their actions.“Between 10 and 20 percent of the time, they would miss the object,”says Solman, even though they picked it up.“We thought that was remarkably often.”
To find out why, the team developed a number of further experiments. To check whether volunteers were just forgetting their target, they gave a new group a list of items to memorize before the search task, which they had to recall afterwards.
The idea was to fill each volunteer’s“memory load”,so that they were unable to hold any other information in their short-term memory. Although this was expected to have a negative effect on their performance at the search task, the extra load made no difference to the percentage of mistakes volunteers made.
To check that the volunteers were paying enough attention to the items they were moving, Solman’s team created another task involving a pile of cards marked with shapes that only became visible while the card was being moved. Again, they were surprised to see the same level of error, says Solman. Finally, the team analyzed participants’ mouse movements as they were carrying out a similar search task. They discovered that volunteers’ movements were slower after they had moved and missed their target.
Solman’s team propose that the system in the brain that deals with movement is running too quickly for the visual system to keep up. While you are searching around a messy house to find your keys, you might not be giving your visual system enough time to work out what each object is. Since time can be costly, sacrificing accuracy on occasion for speed might be beneficial overall, Solman thinks.
The slowing of mouse movements suggests that at some level the volunteers were aware that they had missed their target, a theory that is backed up by other studies that show people tend to slow down their actions after they have made a mistake, even if they don’t consciously realize the mistake.
43. What conclusion has Solman drawn from the first task?
A. More volunteers are needed to confirm the findings.
B. It happens very often that people miss what they intend to find.
C. Computers make negative effects on how people perform at the task.
D. Targets tend to be forgotten after people search for 10 minutes or more.
44. What can be inferred from the third task that Solman’s team created?
A. Cards marked with shapes may become a source of distraction.
B. Fewer errors will be made if people are forbidden to move cards.
C. People may be absent-minded even when they are moving something.
D. Volunteers prefer to use a mouse to control the objects on the computer screen.
45. What does“a theory”(in the last paragraph)refers to?
A. Mistakes will cause people to reduce the speed.
B. Our visual system can’t keep up with the brain system.
C. The faster people move, the more mistakes they will make.
D. People’s actions are independent of the mistakes they make.
46. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Better memory, worse search
B. Accuracy speaks louder than speed
C. Hurry up, or you will make mistakes
D. Slow down your search to find your keys
B 44. C 45. A 46. D
根据第二段“To investigate how we search, Solman’s team created a simple computer-based task that involved searching through a pile of colored shapes on a computer screen. Volunteers were instructed to find a specific shapes as quickly as possible, while the computer monitored their actions. ‘Between 10 and 20 percent of the time, they would miss the object,”says Solman, even though they picked it up.“We thought that was remarkably often.’ (为了研究我们是如何搜索的,索尔曼的团队创建了一个简单的基于计算机的任务,包括在计算机屏幕上的一堆彩色形状中搜索。志愿者被要求尽快找到一个特定的形状,同时计算机监控他们的动作。索尔曼说,‘在10%到20%的情况下,他们会错过物体,即使他们把它拿起来。我们认为这种情况非常常见。’)”可知,人们经常会错过他们想要找的东西。故选B项。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“To check that the volunteers were paying enough attention to the items they were moving, Solman’s team created another task involving a pile of cards marked with shapes that only became visible while the card was being moved. Again, they were surprised to see the same level of error, says Solman. Finally, the team analyzed participants’ mouse movements as they were carrying out a similar search task. They discovered that volunteers’ movements were slower after they had moved and missed their target.
根据最后一段“The slowing of mouse movements suggests that at some level the volunteers were aware that they had missed their target, a theory that is backed up by other studies that show people tend to slow down their actions after they have made a mistake, even if they don’t consciously realize the mistake. (鼠标移动的放缓表明,在某种程度上,志愿者意识到他们错过了目标,这一理论得到了其他研究的支持,这些研究表明,人们在犯了错误后往往会放慢行动,即使他们没有意识到错误。)”可知,此处的 a theory 指代people tend to slow down their actions after they have made a mistake, even if they don’t consciously realize the mistake,即:犯错会导致人们放慢速度。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“You’re running late for work and you can’t find your keys: What’s really annoying is that in your search, you pick up and move them without realizing. (你上班要迟到了,你找不到钥匙:真正烦人的是,在你找钥匙的时候,你在不知不觉中拿起并移动了钥匙。)”,最后一段“The slowing of mouse movements suggests that at some level the volunteers were aware that they had missed their target, a theory that is backed up by other studies that show people tend to slow down their actions after they have made a mistake, even if they don’t consciously realize the mistake. (鼠标移动的放缓表明,在某种程度上,志愿者意识到他们错过了目标,这一理论得到了其他研究的支持,这些研究表明,人们在犯了错误后往往会放慢行动,即使他们没有意识到错误。)”可知,专注于移动物体这个动作就会错过你想要的目标物体,因此要想达成目的,就需要放慢搜索速度,这是研究团队通过实验得出的结论,也是文章的标题。故选D项。
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

But people just jumped over the fence. The back of the sign was black with graffiti(涂鸦)there was wire across it, but they still got through. So I decided to improve the effectiveness of the security.
Now we have motion-detectors and cameras. Everything goes via the internet to a dedicated surveillance(监控)team watching various structures around the city. Even so, people still try to climb over the barrier, mostly innocent tourists surprised that you can’t walk right up to the sign. But they can get a closer look on one of my regular tours.
____50____ They want to light the sign, paint it pink, or cover it in something to promote their product. You’ll get a really enthusiastic marketing executive call up, terribly excited because they think they’re the first person to think of this or that idea. They mostly get turned down. That’s because we don’t like to change the image and we hope it will have the same significance for generations to come.
A. The letters in the sign weren’t straight and still aren’t.
