A Colorado woman who lost the diamond engagement ring given to her by her fiance shortly before he died was reunited with the precious item weeks later by a man who found it in the mud.
Raquel Aiken said she had just finished a game of tennis in Denver a few weeks ago when she apparently dropped her ring on the ground while fishing her keys out of her purse. She said she didn't realize what had happened until much later.
Aiken told KDVR-TV about her missing ring, and the story came to the attention of Dude Olguin,an employee at Brewery Bar II in Denver, when he overheard some customers talking about it.Olguin said he wondered if the woman from the story was the owner of the ring he recently found.
"I was getting ready to go to my third job the next day.I was just going to my car,and I just happened to look down," Olguin told KDVR-TV. "My first reaction, you know, temptation—maybe go pawn it or to find a jeweler to tell me more about it," he said. "But really,my faith told me just to hold onto it and just wait and listen."
Olguin asked Aiken to meet him at the restaurant. "He went to his car,and came back with the ring," Aiken said. "Immediately I was in tears,I couldn't believe it.It's a miracle." She said the return of the ring was especially meaningful. "It definitely reconnected me again with my fiance," Aiken said. "The fact of where it was found and how it was found and an employee that works here at a place he loves. The whole connection is really, really amazing and a true blessing."

Scientists estimate that more than 95 percent of Earth's oceans have never been observed, which means we have seen less of our planet's ocean than we have the far side of the moon or the surface of Mars. The high cost of powering an underwater camera for a long time,by tying it to a research boat or sending a ship to recharge its batteries,is a steep challenge preventing widespread undersea exploration.
MIT researchers have taken a major step to overcome this problem by developing a battery-free,wireless underwater camera that is about 100,000 times more than other undersea cameras. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and transmits image data wirelessly through the water.
The autonomous camera is powered by sound. It transforms mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment. After capturing and encoding (编码) image data, the camera also uses sound waves to transmit data to a receiver that reconstructs the image.
Because it doesn't need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before ,enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. It could also be used to capture images of ocean pollution or monitor the health and growth of fish raised in aquaculture farms.
"One of the most exciting applications of this camera for me personally is in the context of climate monitoring. We are building climate models, but we are missing data from over 95 percent of the ocean. This technology could help us build more accurate climate models and better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world," says Fadel Adib, associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
    8. What does paragraph l mainly tell us? ______
    A. The introduction of new batteries.
    B. The emphasis on scientists' leading work.
    C. The advertisement for underwater cameras.
    D. The difficulty of widespread undersea exploration.
    9. How is the camera powered? ______
    A. It is charged by batteries.
    B. It uses sound waves to transmit data.
    C. It changes sound waves into water energy.
    D. It changes mechanical energy into electrical energy.
    10. What does the underlined word "retrieval" mean in paragraph 4? ______
    A. Being fetched. B. Being destroyed.
    C. Being out of control. D. Being reconstructed.
    11. What can we learn about the MIT researchers' camera? ______
    A. It affects climate change efficiently.
    B. It will be widely used in some fields.
    C. It will help know more about Mars' climate.
    D. It monitors the health and growth of new species.
    D
It's one of the ultimate tests of willpower:you've been wandering around the market for hours and you're tired and hungry. Then you catch a smell of something fragrant (香的) and delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening.Junk food companies are well aware that the smell of their product sets off a desire in your brain and that you'll pay for that later. It is a response that has been researched, and you'd better believe your favorite fast-food chains have marketing teams that are using that research to their advantage.
Let's take a closer look at this process.Have you ever noticed that whatever indulgent food (放纵型食品) catches your attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it?A couple of minutes later you are standing in line, and it isn't quite as appealing as it was just moments ago,but now you've invested time,so you trust your first feeling to treat yourself.
But a recent statement says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.Dipayan Biswas,a marketing professor, found there is a direct connection between how long a person is exposed to indulgent food smells and choosing healthier foods. "The results of a series of experiments show that extended exposure of more than two minutes to junk food smells leads to fewer purchases of unhealthy foods compared with no smell or a non-junk-food-related smell," reads the summary of his study.
What appears to be going on here is that the brain doesn't necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell and a pleasant taste. "Extended exposure to an indulgent food smell brings pleasure in the mind, which in turn reduces the desire for actual consumption of indulgent foods," he explains. So next time you feel you don't have the willpower to resist cookies, smell all that sweetness for just a minute or two.To your brain it's the same as actually eating cookies, and the purchase desire would decrease.
    12. What can we learn about junk food smells from the first paragraph? ______
    A. They hardly affect people's food choices.
    B. They can make a difference in marketing.
    C. They are unlikely to fool wise customers.
    D. They finally decrease people's purchase desire.
    13. What does the second paragraph basically serve as? ______
    A. An example. B. An argument. C. A comparison. D. A comment.
    14. Which statement will Biswas probably agree with? ______
    A. The influence of food smells changes over time.
    B. The senses of taste and smell are closely linked.
    C. The behavior of smelling food doesn't equal eating it.
    D. The brain can't tell where sensory pleasure is from.
    15. What is the best title for the text? ______
    A. Train your brain to resist junk food
    B. Smells of junk food can keep you off it
    C. Watch out for tricky marketing tools
    D. Food addiction is never about willpower
Some people love a great thunderstorm;others are frightened by the first flash of lightning or sound of thunder. (1) But there are easy steps you can take to protect your home and your life from lightning.
    Protect Electronics from Severe Weather
    (2) It can follow the wires or phone lines into your room—ruining computers,TVs and other electronics. One protection against electronics being "fried" by lightning is simply to unplug them whenever a rain or a storm is coming.Disconnect Internet and satellite dish connections no matter where they are.
    Reduce the Risk of Fire
Lightning rods (避雷针) can protect a building from catching fire. (3) They just provide a path for the electricity to reach the ground more safely. The rods at the top of the building are only the first part of a good system. When lightning strikes, the electricity needs to move to the ground.Wires conduct electricity from the lightning rods to metal rods buried in the ground. (4) Understand Lightning
When lightning hits the ground,a tree,a tower or even a building,it may also spreads along the ground,so being near something that's struck by lightning is almost as dangerous as being hit directly by lightning. (5) The Empire State Building gets struck by lightning around 20 times every year. Its lightning rod protects the structure,as well as the people inside.

A.It can even strike the same spot more than once.
B.You might want to consider protecting an entire building.
C.When this happens, anything in its path could be in danger.
D.But the chance of lightning striking your house doesn't change.
E.Each connection must be secure so lightning doesn't jump to the building.
F.Lightning hitting your roof or nearby power lines is terrible but not worst.
G.Whether you love or hate them, thunderstorms produce dangerous lightning.

Afternoon was Mrs. Conroy's favorite time of day. After a day's hard work, her eyes were tired and her feet hurt. She enjoyed the nice long nap she took on the bus. Mrs. Conroy had made friends with the bus driver, Mr. Angstrom. He always woke her up before her stop. She usually felt fresh when she got off the bus.
But today was different. Mr. Angstrom wasn't driving. A small man in a wrinkled uniform sat in the driver's seat.
"Where's Mr. Angstrom?" asked Mrs. Conroy, dropping her money into the box.
"I don't know. Sick, I guess. I just work here, lady." Step to the back seat.
Mrs. Conroy hoped that Mr. Angstrom was all right. She didn't like this new driver. She decided not to sleep on the way home today. She didn't want to ask this driver to wake her. He didn't look like the type who'd want to do anyone a favor.
Mrs. Conroy tried to keep her eyes open, but the gentle rocking of the bus had a calm effect. Within a few minutes her eyes closed. With her head dropping to her shoulders, Mrs. Conroy fell fast asleep.
The next thing Mrs. Conroy knew, a hand was on her shoulder. Someone was shaking her awake.
"Wake up, lady. We've come to the end of the line. Wake up."
Mrs. Conroy blinked(眨眼)and opened her eyes. The bus driver looked down at her."Time for you to get off the bus."
Mrs. Conroy peered out the window. "Where am I?" she asked. "I was supposed to get off at Essex Avenue."
"You're at the last stop, lady. Come on, get off the bus. I have a schedule to keep to."
Mrs. Conroy was having trouble waking up. The bus driver took her arm and helped her down the bus. "Wait a minute," she said in a sharp voice. "This isn't Essex Avenue. Where am I? How can I get home?"
"Can you ride me back ?" she begged. "Sorry, lady. It's against the rules." he said as he closed the door.
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
