China covers large areas and has a big population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese has become a hot one: the way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0. 25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying enough vegetables and meat for a week is normal. Also, you can buy a small amount(数量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing(储存) food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

三、 My name is Tom. I live in a small village in China. I live far from my school. It's about 4 kilometers. There is a big river between my school and the village, and the river runs too quickly for the boat, so it's not easy for us to go to school. We always go on a ropeway to cross the river. It's dangerous. But we aren't afraid. We love our school and our teachers. Our teachers are friendly to us, just like our parents. We have a dream to have a bridge. And we will study hard to make our dream come true.
四、 Great changes have taken place in people's lives in the past 20 years. In many ways, people live better than before, as we can see from the following points.
In the past, every family had several children. Many of the children couldn't get a good education. Now, families have fewer, but healthier children. Many of the children can go to college.
Historically, people kept in touch with relatives or friends mainly by sending letters. Now people can talk to others on the telephone or the Internet at home.
Transportation has also changed. People used to go to work on foot or by bike. Now some rich people go to work by car.
Lastly, big families used to have small rooms and the whole family had to live in a small apartment. These days, as more and more buildings have been built, more and more people have moved into big and bright apartments with several rooms.

Great Changes in My Hometown
In recent years, great changes have taken place in my hometown. I have experienced the changes myself.
Three years ago, there were fewer flowers or trees here. The river was dirty and smelt terrible because some factories poured the waste water into the river. We didn't dare to drink the water any more.
But now everything has changed a lot. The flowers and trees are here and there. The air is fresh and the water is clean. And you can see bees and butterflies dance. Most of the people have realized the importance of protecting the environment. To save energy and reduce air pollution, they often walk or ride bikes to work instead of driving cars.
Now people are living a comfortable life.
