In the story Snow White, the jealous queen decides to get rid of Snow White once and for all with an apple dipped in deadly poison (毒药). The seeds and pits (果核) of all these fruits contain a chemical called amygdalin (苦杏仁苷). Inside an animal's stomach, amygdalin turns into a strong poison called cyanide (氰化物). And cyanide can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them.

Still, don't worry if you accidentally swallow a few apple seeds. Each seed has only a very tiny amount of poison. You'd have to eat a large bowlful of seeds to feel any effect.
