Still burned or buried. But is it a proper way?Waste pollutes the environment, harms people’s health and causes animals to die. It also gets in the way of green and sustainable development. We can’t make money at the cost of the environment. We should leave clean water and green mountains to our next generations(一代人). China is getting really serious about waste now. We are taking less waste from developed countries. From January 2018, China started to stop 24 kinds of waste coming into our country. And more laws and rules about dealing with waste have been made. Anyone who breaks the law will be punished. China also tries to put waste into good use. One example is the waste electricity factories. They burn waste to make electricity in a green way. No harmful gases or water will get into the environment. The Chinese government is encouraging people to do waste sorting(分类). (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2 ③=Paragraph 3 ④=Paragraph 4 ⑤=Paragraph 5 ⑥=Paragraph 6) A. B. C. D. C Dr. Dolittle lived in a small town called Puddleby. Everyone in the town knew him. The dog and children ran after him. He lived in a small house, but he had a large garden. He kept many animals in his garden. His favorite animals were Dab-Dab, a duck; Jip, a dog; Gub-Gub, a baby pig and Polynesia, a parrot. He also kept some fish, rabbits, a squirrel, a cow, a baby cow, a horse, chickens and so on. Dr. Dolittle didn’t have many patients. Most people didn’t like all of his animals, so when they were ill, they went to a doctor in another town. “But you don’t have any money,” his sister told him. “You need patients.” “I have a patient,” Dr. Dolittle answered. “The cat’s-meat-man. He’s the man who sells me meat for the cat.” “He doesn’t pay you enough to live on,” his sister told him. “Then I’ll sell everything I have,” he said. And he did. He sold most of his furniture. He also sold most of his clothes. Then he had enough money to buy food for himself and his animals. One day, the cat’s-meat-man said to him, “Why don’t you stop being a doctor for people and become a doctor for animals instead? I’m sure that you know a lot about animals — more than most vets. You wrote a wonderful book about cats. I’d send all the people with sick dogs or cats to you.” When the cat’s-meat-man left, Polynesia, the parrot, flew onto the table. “He’s right, Doctor,” Polynesia said. “You should become an animal doctor.” “There are a lot of vets,” Dr, Dolittle said. “Perhaps there are a lot of vets. But you’d be the best vet of all. I’m not the only animal that can talk. All the animals can talk. Each kind of animal has its own language. I’ll teach you mine if you like.” “Yes, please,” Dr. Dolittle said. He opened a drawer (抽屉) and took out a notebook and pencils. “Will you teach me the parrot’s ABCs first?” he asked. Polynesia agreed to teach Dr. Dolittle the parrots’ language. Later that day, Jip came into the room. Polynesia said, “He’s talking to you, doctor.” “I don’t think he is,” Dr. Dolittle said. “He’s just scratching (挠) himself.” “Dogs talk with their ears, their noses, and their tails,” Polynesia told him. “They don’t always make a noise. Do you see how he is moving his nose now?” “Yes.” “He is telling us that it has stopped raining, and he wants to ask you a question.” Every day, Dr. Dolittle learned the languages of the animals. When people found out he was now an animal doctor, they brought their sick pets to him. One day, a horse said to him, “You’re a much better animal doctor than the vet. You knew I couldn’t see well, and you made glasses for me.” The horse was very pleased. He could see very well. He told all his friends how clever Dr. Dolittle was, and they told all their friends. Soon, many animals came to see him. He had a different door for each animal, and he wrote the name of each kind of animal above each door. HORSES, COWS...Before long, every animal that lived in or near the small town became the doctor’s patient. He was very happy, and he liked his life very much. And it’s a good thing that she has already started her work, because space gardening can be really hard.As usual, astronaut George White looked into the closed plant room. He had planted Dr. Williams’s quick-growing seedlings in it, but none of the stems were showing. He opened the room to check and found the problem. The stems weren’t growing upward and the roots weren’t growing downward. On Earth, gravity (重力) helps a plant’s stems and roots to find “up” and “down”. However, in the space station, there was almost no gravity.Dr. Williams suggested a solution: give the plants more light, as plants also use sunlight to find their way. And it worked. When the plants had more light, the stems turned up and the roots went down. Now Dr. Williams was free to worry about the next problem: Would her baby plants live to flower? Can we grow food on a space journey? Many plants died in the space station. Dr. Williams thought she knew why: the space plants were hungry for air. Plants live by taking up CO2 from the air. Since a plant uses it up in the air around, the plant needs moving air to bring more CO2 close to its surface. On Earth, the air is always moving. Gravity pulls down cold air, and warm air rises. And with these air movements, plants get enough CO2.Many earlier experiments with plants in space had used closed rooms. Dr. Williams tried a new greenhouse that had a fan to keep the air move. The plants loved it. They flowered and even produced more seeds. Using Dr. Williams’s method, astronaut George completed the first seed-to-seed experiment in space, and moved one plant closer to a garden in space.“And this,” says Dr.Williams, “is good news for long-term space travel.”( ) 52. Why have Dr. Williams’s team tried to grow plants in space? A. To produce fresh air for astronauts. B. To help astronauts relax themselves. C. To provide food for long space journeys. D. To make the space garden more beautiful.( ) 53. How did light help solve the problem mentioned in Paragraph 3? A. It caused the gravity to change. B. It encouraged the plants to grow faster. C. It helped the plants to grow in the right direction. D. It showed the astronauts where to plant vegetables.( ) 54. Why did many plants die in the space station? A. The light was too strong. B. There was too much CO2. C. There was not enough room to grow. D. The air condition was not good enough.( ) 55. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refers to________. A. the moving air B. the closed room C. the space journey D. the space garden( ) 56. What can we learn about Dr. Williams’s team from the passage? A. They mainly live on fresh vegetables. B. When he arrived at school, it was half past eight. He was a little worried. He ran quickly to the gate. It was closed too. Then he saw an open window on the first floor. It was the headmaster’s office. Bob looked into the room. No one was there. He quickly climbed up and jumped into the room, just then he heard someone was talking outside the door. He looked around and hid himself under the sofa. One minute later, the headmaster came in. He turned on the light and sat on the sofa. Then he began to read. Bob lay under the sofa and looked at the headmaster’s feet for half an hour. He was too afraid to move. Finally the headmaster stood up and walked towards the door. ‘Thank Godness, he did not find me under the sofa,’ thought Bob. Then the headmaster stopped.
