Discuss the following questions:
- Have you ever climbed mountains?
- Did any accidents happen during your climbing?
- What did you do to overcome it?
二、目标
- Students can find the main idea of the passage.
- Students can understand and read the passage.
- Learn some new words and expressions, such as climber, accident, situation, kilo, rock, knife etc.

- Students read the article quickly and find out what the passage is mainly about.;
2. Students read the passage and answer the following question:
(1) Where did the accident happen on April 26, 2003?
It happened in Utah, America.
(2) Why couldn’t Aron move?
Because his arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock.
(3) How did Aron free himself?
He used his knife to cut off half his right arm.
四、后教
- Translate the article with the students together.
- Explain the important and difficult points.
- Language points:
(1) have problems breathing
breathe /briːð/ v. 呼吸
breathe 既可以作及物动词, 也可以作不及物动词。作及物动词时宾语一般是air。
速记小法:动词breathe的读音为/briːð/,名词
breath 的读音为/breθ/。
e.g. The air was so cold that we could hardly breathe.
空气非常寒冷, 我们难以呼吸。
Every morning we get up early, breathe the fresh air and hear the birds sing in the woods.
每天早晨我们都早起, 呼吸新鲜空气, 聆听树林里鸟儿的啼叫。

(2) cut ourselves
ourselves / aʊə(r) 'selvz/ pron. 我们自己
e.g. At the party, we enjoyed ourselves with our friends.
在聚会上, 我们和朋友们过得很快乐。
We learned to cook all by ourselves.
我们都是独自学习做饭。
ourselves 是人称代词we的反身代词。

(3) As a mountain climber, Aron is used to taking risks.
be used to 习惯于……
be /get used to
“习惯于……”, to 是介词, 后面使用名词、代词或动名词作宾语。be 强调状态, get 强调动作。
take risks 冒险
take risks 相当于take a risk, 意为“冒险”。
