Welcome to our free resources for first aid
First-aid education has been included in the health curriculum for schools in England. Now, more children and young people will acquire the skills they need to save a life.
To celebrate the change, we’re launching a brand new teaching website. It’s aimed at all schools in the UK.
We understand that, for some people, teaching first aid can be quite frightening—especially if you’ve never done it before. So, we?ve designed these free resources to help you confidently deliver lessons in line with the new curriculum. Here’s how:
●Each first-aid skill focuses on one key action.
●The teaching resources provide you with all the guidance you need.
●The resources have easy-to-follow lesson plans that save you time in preparing for your classes.
This new interactive learning website will include:
●a multimedia library with supporting materials you need for each lesson
●different learning activities for those aged 5—18
●a full curriculum provided for the new requirements in England
How will it benefit learners?
Through all kinds of practical activities, learners will:
●have skills, confidence and willingness to act when someone needs first aid
●learn first aid for common injuries and what to do in an emergency
●develop basic life skills, including how to deal with challenging situations
●get other ideas such as kindness, safety and sharing learning with others
If you have any questions, please contact reducation@redcross.org.uk.

CPR(心肺复苏术) saves lives. It can really change someone?s life, as I found out for myself three years ago.
On October 14, 2009, my mom had an accident while playing soccer and was taken to hospital. The next morning, I was told that my mom had had a cardiac arrest (心脏停搏). I later learned that two players on the opposing team kept breathing air into my mother’s mouth and pressing her chest for seven minutes, as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. My mom stayed in the hospital for only ten days. I know that I am very lucky to have my mom here, because most people who have cardiac arrests and do not receive CPR within the first six minutes die.
My mom has used this experience to spread the word about CPR. She joined the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Support Group, which was set up to help survivors and their families through a difficult time. The support group also takes part in the Heart Walk every year, raising money for the American Heart Association. And she attends Lobby Day each year, convincing the New York State Legislature to pass a law that would make basic CPR and first-aid training a graduation requirement for high school students.
This task is not as difficult as it may first appear to be. Every student in New York State must take health class in order to graduate. Just one or two days of health class each year will ensure that every student in the state will learn this important skill. This training is also nearly free. There is no need for a professional CPR instructor because the American Heart Association has online videos that show the newest techniques in CPR. Also, most local EMS services will lend training models to schools.
My mom and her fellow survivors go to a high school each year to talk to the students about the importance of learning CPR. This training will not get you the official CPR certification (证书), but as my mom says, “You don?t need a little card to save someone’s life.”
4.How does the author feel about the two players?
A.Deeply grateful. B.Quite concerned.
C.A bit sorry. D.Rather frightened.
5.In what way did the authors mother change?
A.She made efforts to improve CPR.
B.She realized the key importance of law.
C.She paid more attention to her health.
D.She became an active CPR supporter.
6.What does Paragraph 4 say about the CPR training for students?
A.It may be turned down by a lot of students.
B.It requires little time and money.
C.It will become a graduation requirement.
D.It is difficult and dangerous.
7.What might the authors mother agree with?
A.It is challenging for many students to master CPR skills.
B.Every graduate should get an official CPR certification.
C.CPR skills are more important than CPR certifications.
D.High schools should make a special card for CPR learners.
C
Do you like to eat many different foods at the same time? Most of us do, but to buy twenty dishes at a restaurant is just too expensive for most Americans. A good way is to eat a potluck(百乐餐).
The idea is to have each family in a community prepare one or two dishes only and bring them to a large room. Many soups, salads, meats, hot dishes, cold dishes, desserts, and drinks are put on the table at one time. Each family member then takes a paper plate, a plastic knife, a fork, a spoon and a paper cup. In turn, they pick out the food they want to eat and fill their own plates with a balanced meal. Then, they sit with either their family or friends.
When they finish, they may go back to the table and eat more food for there is always more than the group can eat at one time. Following the meal, everyone puts their paper plates and cups as well as the plastic knives, forks, and spoons into the rubbish container.
At many potlucks, the people then begin having fun. A group of four men may sing as a Barbershop Quartet. A pianist or a violinist may play a solo. Often there is group singing. Sometimes there is a liars contest. Three people are chosen to tell a story. They leave the room and come back and two tell a true story while one tells a lie. The lie must be a clever story so it will be hard to choose which of the three stories is not true. The liars contest always causes everyone to laugh loudly.
Everyone leaves the potluck in good spirits as they have all eaten a very good meal and they have enjoyed themselves very much.
8.How does the author explain a potluck?
A.A meal contained in a pot that will bring you good luck.
B.An ordinary meal for several families.
C.A big meal for some special guests.
D.A meal where many families eat together each preparing one or two dishes.
9.How can people at a potluck enjoy themselves?
A.A group of three men may sing as a Barbershop Quartet.
B.A pianist or a violinist may play as a Barbershop Quartet.
C.Three people are often chosen to have a liars contest.
D.Three people are chosen to tell a true story.
10.Why is it hard for people to choose the lie in the liars contest?
A.Because the lie is also a true story.
B.Because the lie is told by a clever liar.
C.Because the lie is required to be a clever story.
D.Because the true stories are easy to tell.
11.What is the authors purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce a community activity.
B.To speak highly of a social activity.
C.To show a very effective way to eat well.
D.To show the importance of a potluck.
D
Most of us think of tears as a human phenomenon showing human emotion. But they’re not just for crying. All vertebrates (脊椎动物), even reptiles and birds, have tears, which are extremely important for maintaining healthy eyesight.
Now, a new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, shows that non-human animals tears are not so different from our own. The chemical similarities are so great, in fact, that the composition of other species tears—and how they’re adapted to their environments—may provide a new view in better treatments for human eye diseases.
Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals. In the new study, the tears of reptiles and birds were analyzed for the first time. Tears form a film(薄膜)—a very thin layer over the eye that consists of three ingredients: mucus(黏液), water, and oil. The mucus coats the eyes surface and helps to stick the film to the eye, the water is a natural salty solution containing proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.
Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears; the expression “crocodile tears”, which refers to a persons false emotion, comes from the tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.
But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag, a scientist at Iowa State University, in Ames. They help with vision and also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea, the eye?s clear outer layer.
By providing information about how to protect the vision of, for example, sea turtles, which are endangered, the study could provide some useful information for environmentalists. If we understand what makes up a healthy tear film, then we can understand how environmental effects can harm an animals eyes. Learning how reptiles and birds use tears may also inspire new treatments for conditions such as dry eyes, which occurs when there is not enough oil existing in tears. The disease, common in cats, dogs and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.
12.What do human and animals’ tears have in common?
A.Chemical composition. B.Harmful effects.
C.Emotional function. D.Flowing speed.
13.What does the underlined word “coats” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Dresses. B.Covers.
C.Forms. D.Cleans.
14.Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with?
A.More tears mean better vision.
B.The cornea has much nutrition.
C.Tears shelter eyes from being infected.
D.Weeping contributes to eye diseases.
15.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Tears, a barrier to eyes
B.A better treatment for eye diseases
C.Non-human tears promise new cures
D.Other species tears are similar to humans

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Imagine going to the doctor to get treatment for a terrible fever. 16 The robot detects the cause of your fever, travels to the appropriate system and provides medication directly for the infected area.
17 They are called nanorobot(纳米机器人) and engineering teams around the world are working to design robots that will eventually be used to treat everything from fever to cancer.
In recent years, researchers have been building nanorobots out of a familiar material—the same stuff that makes human life possible. 18 DNA is all around and in you—you just can’t see it. If you were to look inside almost any cell inside any living creature, you would find DNA.
This might sound surprising—especially since these nanorobots don?t need batteries(电池) or any power sources. Instead, they work by using the natural structure of DNA.The nanorobots “crawl”(缓慢行进)on DNA. Sometimes researchers refer to these things as DNA “spiders”. 19 A nanorobot could, perhaps, destroy just a cancerous cell, for example, but leave healthy cells alone.
20 But the future is bright for DNA-built nanorobots. One day, perhaps the DNA-made machine will swim around in the human body, delivering medicine to diseased cells or helping doctors diagnose problems. Or maybe they?ll help build the smallest computers the world has ever seen.
A.These nanorobots are made from DNA.
B.Nanorobots made from DNA aren?t useful yet.
C.This description will give you a simple picture of the legs of a DNA nanorobot.
D.In other words, the DNA nanorobot destroys the track as it goes.
E.Being able to make such a tiny thing move in a certain way might be useful for health.
F.Instead of giving you a pill or a shot, the doctor puts a tiny robot into your bloodstream.
G.In fact, we’re not that far off from seeing devices like this actually used in medical procedures.

Thanks to the Chinese government scholarship, I was able to come to China and realize my dream as 36 international student. In my two years of Master?s study, I collected a bunch of wonderful memories.
Two of them were joining in a hiking marathon and climbing to the top of a mountain. I did not win the marathon, 37 the sight of the beautiful landscape along the way was enough for me. In China, I found that hiking was one of the best leisure 38 (activity) for Chinese people.
The visit 39 Zijin Mountain last year was the most challenging yet very memorable to me because of the bad weather in winter and the long hours of journey 40 (reach) the top. The temperature at that time reached a freezing point. My hands were stone cold and my face 41 (go) very pale. When we reached the top, the scenery was just so 42 (attract). The sunset view was the best of all. One of my friends took a photo of 43 (I) and my Chinese friend. We stayed on the top for a while, until we felt that we should leave before we would 44 (total) lose our sensation(知觉能力) because of the low temperature.
I believe that 45 (climb) mountains gives someone a sense of direction and a motivation to reach his goal no matter how hard or unimaginable it could be.

第二节
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once upon a time, there lived a wise man. Everyone respected him and many people came to him asking for advice.
His son, however, was very lazy and wasted his time sleeping. The years passed, and time faded the youth of the wise man. He recognized the need to give something to his son so that he could take care of himself and his family.
One day, he called his son to his room and said, “My son, you are no more a kid now. I want you to find the real purpose of your life.”
Then he handed his son a bag. The son opened the bag. Inside were some food, a little money and a map. His father continued, “I want you to go and find a treasure. I have drawn a map of the place where the treasure is hidden. You need to go and find it.”
The son loved this idea. The next day, he set out on a journey to find the treasure. He had to travel really far across forests and mountains. Along the way, he met a lot of people. He was helped by some with food and by some with money.
Finally, after a long year, he reached his destination. He searched and searched, but found nothing. He spent two days looking and digging for the treasure. By the third day, he was so tired that he decided to leave.
On his way back, he met the same people who had helped him earlier. This time he stayed a few days with them and helped them in some way or another. He realized how nice they had been to a stranger who had nothing to offer them in return.
When he reached home, he realized it had been two years since he left the place. He walked straight into his father’s room. “Father,” he said. The father immediately jumped to his feet and hugged his son.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
The father asked, “Did you find the treasure?”
Paragraph 2:
The son continued, “But I did enjoy the journey on my way back home.”

第二节
Paragraph 1:
The father asked,“Did you find the treasure?”“The journey was fantastic. But forgive me, for I wasn’t able to find the treasure,” the son said. “There wasn’t any treasure, my son,” the father answered, smiling. “But why did you send me to find it then?” the son asked. “I will surely tell you why, but first you tell me how was your journey? Did you enjoy it?” “Of course not, Father! I was worried someone else would find the treasure before I did.”
Paragraph 2:
The son continued, “But I did enjoy the journey on my way back home.” He was excited. “I made many friends. I learned so many different skills. There was so much to learn that I forgot the pain of not finding the treasure.” The father said to him, “Everyone has a goal in life. But if you pay too much attention to the goal, then you will miss out on the real treasures of life. The truth is that life has no goal at all.Just experience it and grow with it every day.”
