Although in the 17th century in the United States fine art and folk art had similar qualities, a difference between them began to appear as time went on. In the 18th and 19th centuries artists studied overseas and came back to paint portraits of upperclass families in American society. The less fortunate artists traveled around their own areas and created pictures of the countryside
society. Anyway, artists got trained and those simple works improved a lot.

Around 1930, folk art began to take on a new meaning and was considered as an expression of the common people and an expression of a small cultural class. Folk art is never the product of
art movements, but comes out of craft(工艺) traditions. This art is based not on measurements or
calculations and rarely goes with the standards of realism. It goes straight to the bases of art which the folk artists feel naturally.

The period 1930~1960 was the time when folk artists began to receive recognition. They often began their art careers late in life and use art as an outlet(发泄) for their energy. Their
materials were cheap and simple, their subjects were different, but their creativity flowed. Doing their own things became the standard, and was what made folk art so attractive.

Although it is hard to explain folk art, one thing is certainit touches us in a special way because the artists show us how he or she brought beauty into their everyday life. Since folk artists
come from all walks of life, each piece of art created is one of a kind, emphasizing(强调) color,
simplicity of line and vivid, simple form. Most importantly, it shows the history of American life.

    56. What was folk art around 1930 based on according to the second paragraph?

    A. The tradition of the upper class. B. The progress of art in that period. C. The standards of realism. D. The natural feel of the artists.
    57. Why did folk art become popular during the period from 1930 to 1960? A. Artists had the freedom of expression during that period.
    B. Artists didn’t need to spend money on materials. C. The subjects were simple and different.
    D. Works showed the history of American life.

    58. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to . A. speak highly of folk art
    B. compare folk art and fine art

    C. tell the history and characteristics of folk art in America

    D. explain the development and changes of American art

    B
You might notice something new in the next few years as you watch Disney programs: Starting in 2015, there won't be any candy, sugarycereal or fastfood commercials aimed at kids. The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday became the first major media company to banads for junk food on its TV channels, radio stations and websites. It hopes this will stop kids from making poor food choices.
The ban would apply to(适用于) Disney XD and Saturdaymorning children's programming on
Disneyowned ABC stations, as well as Radio Disney and Disneyowned websites aimed at families with young children. In addition, Disney plans to make changes to its kids' menus at theme parks and resorts. Fastfood options will be replaced with healthier choices, such as
    smoothies(沙冰), apples, vegetables and yogurt.
In addition to candy bars and fastfood meals, other foods that don't meet Disney's nutritional(营养的) standards will be banned from the company's kidtargeted media. Any cereal
with 10 grams or more of sugar per serving will be off the air. There will be no ads for full meals of more than 600 calories. Juices with high levels of sugar and foods with too much salt will also be pulled.
Even though many fastfood chains and food companies offer healthier options, like apples and salads, Disney said it could still deny(拒绝) the companies' ads. Leslie Goodman, Disney's senior
vice president of corporate citizenship, said a company that wants to advertise will need to show that it offers a range of healthy options.
Disney isn't the only one pushing away unhealthy foods. Last week, New York City Mayor
Michael Bloomberg proposed a ban on drinks over 16 ounces sold in movie theaters, restaurants
and convenience stores in the Big Apple. He says large, sugary drinks are partly to blame for obesity. Getting rid of junkfood ads could make it easier to keep a family on a healthy diet, says Nadine Haskell, a mother of two sons, 8 and 11, from Columbus, Ohio. "If they see a commercial on TV, then the next time we go to the grocery store they'll say they want to try it," said Haskell.

The British government grants(授予) licenses(许可证) for people to operate radio and TV stations, but over forty years ago the only radio stations that existed legally in Britain were run by the BBC, the stateowned broadcasting company. However, the government’s power only
extended(延展) to the country itself and the seas around it up to three miles from the shore. The
Irishman who founded Radio Caroline simply put the radio equipment on a boat and anchored(用 锚固定) it just outside the threemile limit.

Why would anyone go to so much trouble to start up a radio station? One major reason was the BBC’s policy on the kind of music it broadcast. During a period when pop music was extremely popular, te BBC played very little of it on its radio stations. As a result, there were large numbers of young people who wanted to listen to a particular type of music but couldn’t. Only after Radio Caroline went on the air, young people could enjoy pop music broadcast in English all day.

Additionally, there was another reason for Radio Caroline’s popularity. The disc jockeys(唱 片音乐主持人) didn’t have the typical BBC pronunciation, which, even over forty years ago, was
considered by many to be too formal and oldfashioned. Instead they spoke with regional accents. The audiences loved it and soon many listeners were turning in to Radio Caroline.
Then other pirate(无执照的)radio stations began to spring up(涌现出来) and soon the authorities were being forced to face the new situation created by the pirate radio stations. These
had shown pop music was here to stay, and that young people desperately(极度地) wanted to

listen to radio stations that played it. So the BBC decided to start up its own pop music radio station, Radio 1, and before long Radio Caroline disc jockeys were working there.

In a further development, the British government decided to allow commercial radio stations to operate in the country. This meant that stations could now do legally what Radio Caroline had been doing illegally. Not surprisingly, Radio Caroline found itself in serious financial difficulties. Today, Radio Caroline still exists but it’s no longer as popular as it was over 40 years ago.

    62. More than forty years ago, the British government .

    A. banned all private radio stations B. forbade the BBC to broadcast pop music

    C. set a limit to the number of private TV stations

    D. encouraged people to enjoy pop music

    63. What was the main reason for the Irishman to set up Radio Caroline?

    A. BBC’s policy on music. B. The demand for formal pronunciation.

    C. The problems of BBC’s pronunciation. D. The small number of pirate radio stations.

    64. According to the text, Radio Caroline made history by . A. forcing the BBC to change its policy on pop music
    B. making pop music more popular in England

    C. driving the BBC to start up new radio stations

    D. raising fund for commercial radio stations in England

    65. The purpose of the text is to show .

    A. how pop music was well accepted in England

    B. what contributions Radio Caroline made

    C. how pirate radio stations developed in England

    D. how the BBC is attractive to its listeners

    V. 阅读表达 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

Researchers found that women are overcome by a burning desire to share gossip (流言蜚语)as soon as they hear it. They will typically tell the secret to at least one other person in 47 hours. Depending on who the gossip is about, their boyfriend, husband, best friend or mother is most
likely to be the recipients (接受者)of the information.

The study of 3,000 women aged between 18 and 65 also found that four out of ten admitted they were unable to keep a secret—no matter how personal or secret the news was. It was also found that alcohol usually gives us a helping hand to let out secrets—with more than half admitting a
glass or two of wine could get them to dish the dirt.

Michael Cox, UK Director of Wines of Chile, said, “It’s official that women can’t keep secrets. We are really eager to find out with this survey how many secrets people are told. What we don’t count on is how quickly these are passed on by those we trust. No matter how precious the piece of information is, it often comes out within 48 hours.”

Three quarters say they are able to keep quiet about a secret, and 83 percent consider themselves
100 percent reliable within each group of friends. Yet, four in ten admit to gossiping to a close friend from another friendship group. Nearly half (45 percent) disclose secrets just for the weight to be lifted from their shoulders. More than four in ten think it is acceptable to share a friend’s secret with someone who doesn’t know him or her.

Private issues, true cost of purchases and affairs emerged top of the secretkeeping list, with girls most likely to share a secret chatting facetoface, on the phone or via a text message. Fortunately, over a quarter (27 percent) said they forgot what they were told the following day.

    66. Please explain the underlined words “dish the dirt” in English. (No more than 5 words.)

    Dear Tony,

How is everything going? I’m writing to share with you my recent visit last week.

Last Sunday afternoon, my classmates and I paid a visit to the City Gallery by bus, where an exhibition was being held. There were many famous pictures of successful artists, among which are the Racing Horse by Xu Beihong, the picture of shrimps by Qi Baishi, and many Cubist works of the western artists, which are also pretty impressive.

This experience to see the exhibition makes me start to develop an interest in art. Though I can't fully understand the meanings of the pictures, still I appreciate them very much. I’m crazy about the paintings of Qi Baishi. Those little shrimps in the picture look so lively that I really want to learn how to draw them.

Would you like to tell me what you did recently? I’m looking forward to your reply.

    Yours
