In college, I wrote an article about Christmas Eve to catch the spirit of this special night for my family. I got an A, and even better was this view from my professor, ''I believe you have found a direction for future job.''
My article described our traditions: turkey, church, two presents. A lot of it was about my Aunt Bud,the head of my mom's family. We were lucky we lived closest, so she spent holidays at our house. Sadly, she's gone now. Like so many wonderful spirits, she died too young, just after she was ready for an easy life. But she's not really gone. She visits us all often, in the form of a cardinal---her favorite bird.
One June day, I called my mom. ''What are you doing?'' I asked. ''Sitting here looking at the tree,''she said, pointing to the tree in the middle of our yard. It was about a foot tall when my dad planted it; today it towers over the roof. ''There are cardinals all over it,'' Mom said. ''I've never seen so many.'' I wasn't surprised. ''Mom,you know what day it is, right?'' I said. ''It's Aunt Bud's birthday.'' So of course, she had come to visit-with friends.
In this part of our Readers, we've collected moving stories about unusual events that happened around the holidays. This year we focus on people who showed a kindness that made a forever difference in someone's life. ''Angels in action,'' we call them. I hope your angels visit you this holiday season. Please write to me at letters@rd.com and share your stories with us.

57. What is the purpose of this text?

Have you ever wondered how an insect would taste? ''They are crisp and crunchy (酥脆的). Because of the protein (蛋白质) they provide, I eat them for nutrition(营养),'' Yang Xingyu, who prefers fried insects, told China Daily.
A growing number of people have edible(宜吃的) insects on their plates, such as beetles (甲虫) and bees. They can be fried, boiled in soup or even mixed with dessert. About 2 billion people have already added insects to their diets, according to a report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
Insects are rich in protein and vitamins. Guo Jianjun, a professor at Guizhou University, told China Daily that insects are known as ''God's last piece of cake for mankind'', with their huge potential not yet fully known.
''For example, most of the fat in insects is unsaturated fatty acid (不饱和脂肪酸),'' Guo said, adding that it is good for the heart and brain. The insects are sometimes used in medicine as well. Researchers have been studying how eating insects can increase human's immune (免疫的) function.
More importantly, insects are found in large numbers throughout the world and have strong reproductive (繁殖的) abilities. Thus, they can play an important role in fighting food shortages as the global population continues to increase worldwide.
The global population is expected to rise to 8.5 billion by 2030, and about 10.4 billion by the 2080s, according to a UN report in July.
Huang Dawei at China's Insect Industrialization Professional Committee told China Daily that the global population is rising much faster than the availability (可用率) of food. Thus, developing new food sources is an immediate need.
Raising and eating insects can help the environment. For example, pigs produce 10 to 100 times more greenhouse gases per kilogram than mealworms(黄粉虫).
''Waste from the production and processing of other food materials can be used as feed for edible insects,'' Huang said, adding that this could also reduce costs for producers.
58. Why does Yang Xingyu eat edible insects, according to the text?
A. To show she is brave. B. To get more nutrition.
C. To draw the public's attention. D. To develop new food sources.
59. What does the underlined word ''potential'' in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Influence. B. Numbers. C. Possibilities. D. Popularity.
60. What can we know about the benefits of edible insects, according to the text?
A. They are good for people's eyes. B. They are easy to find and cook.
C. They can replace medicine. D. They can help reduce world hunger.
61. What's the advantage of raising insects, compared with traditional food sources?
A. It uses less space. B. It takes less time.
C. It makes more money. D. It produces less pollution.
D
The fridge is considered necessary. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food list appeared with the label: ''Store in the fridge.''
In my fridge-less fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthy. The milkman came every day, the shopkeeper, the baker, and the ice-cream man sent things two or three times each week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and the rest bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten(腐烂的) food. Thirty years on food-sending have stopped.
The invention of the fridge contributed little to the art of food storage. Many well-tried techniques already existed -- natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...
What fridges did improve was marketing -- marketing electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the world in search of a good price.
Therefore, most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics(热带地区) where they might prove useful, but in the rich countries with proper temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges keep humming(嗡嗡) away , and at large expense, busily keeping an artificially(人工)-cooled space inside an artificially-heated house -- while outside, nature provides the wanted temperature for free.
The fridges' effect upon the environment has been clear, while its contribution to human happiness makes no difference. If you don't believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cupboard and turn off your fridge next winter. You may not eat the hamburgers, but at least you'll get rid of that terrible hum.
62. ''In my fridge-less fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily.'' suggests that _______.
A. the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge in his fifties
B. the author was not used to fridges even in his fifties
C. there was no fridge in the author's home in the 1950s
D. the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s
63. Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?
A. Because people would not buy more food than was necessary.
B. Because food was sent to people two or three times a week.
C. Because food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.
D. Because people had effective ways to preserve their food.
64. Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author?
A. Inventors. B. Customers. C. Producers. D. Travelling salesmen.
65. Which phrases in the fifth paragraph shows the fridge's negative effect on the environment?
A. ''Hum away continuously''. B. ''Climatically almost unnecessary''.
C. ''Artificially - cooled space.'' D. ''With mild temperatures.''

In South Korea, smart-phone cases(手机壳) come with rings fixed on the back to prevent owners from dropping them. This makes people look like they are seemingly married to their phones. In many of Seoul's most Instagrammable(网红)coffee shops, couples on dates spend more time looking at their screens than each other.
Walk around the streets of Seoul or any other South Korean city, and there is a real risk of bumping into people whose eyes are fixed on their smart-phone screens. The study shows that around 370 traffic accidents yearly are caused by people using smart-phones. The facts don't include those who bump into lamp posts and the like while watching the latest videos.
The government tried to fight the ''smombie''(a combination of ''smart-phone and ''zombie''(僵尸) by giving out hundreds of stickers around cities reminding people to ''be safe'' and look up. This seems to have had little effect even though, in Seoul at least, it recently replaced the stickers with plastic boards.
Early last year, the government began to use floor-level traffic lights in smomibe hot-spots in central Seoul. Since then, the experiment has been spread around and beyond the capital. For the moment, the government is keeping old-fashioned eye-level traffic lights as well. But in future, the way to look at a South Korean crossroads may be down.

Since he couldn’t speak French, he had to use English. He stopped a teenager and asked him
the way in English. To his surprise, the teenager shook his head and walked away. Then a young
lady did the same thing. It seemed that everyone refused to help him. At last an old man told
