Tips for Learning English
_____1_____
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it— again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
______2______
The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English”.
_____3_____
There are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. The closer ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm (节奏) or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become.
_____4_____
This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.
_____5_____
Many people think that exercises and tests aren’t much fun. However, if you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Start now by doing some of the exercises and tests on this site, and return in a few days to see what you’ve learned. Keep doing this and you really will make some progress with English.
A.Use All of Your Resources
B.Speak Without Fear
C.Watch English Films and Television
D.Do Exercises and Take Tests
E.Surround Yourself with English
F.Listen to Native Speakers as Much as Possible
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear.
The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it.
However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. Listen to Native Speakers as Much as Possible尽可能多地听母语人士讲话,切题,故选F。
This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors.
Many people think that exercises and tests aren’t much fun. However, if you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Do Exercises and Take Tests做练习和做测试,切题,故选D。
Going to a boarding school is a new experience full of excitement of the unknown. Socialization is a big thing for students and it is common to feel a little uncomfortable going into a situation where everyone is a stranger. You may probably miss your friends from former school. Trying actively to find new friends can help ease the feeling of being lonely. A boarding school is a great chance to make new lifelong friends. The question is: How?
___6___
You may find you have lots of things in common with your roommate, but even if you are completely different from each other, with a little effort and understanding, the two of you may become best friends.
___7___
If you leave your door open, this shows that you welcome visitors. As a result, people will naturally stop in and say hello. Closed doors are not likely to bring many visitors and those who stay locked up in their rooms may give others the impression of being cold. Other students will be less likely to stop in and build a new friendship.
___8___
Getting involved in organized socialization is a great way to meet new people. It also helps you get more familiar with the campus. By staying active in school groups such as clubs and organizations, you can meet lots of people with whom you share common interests.

21.__________________
On the Mediterranean island of Majorca in Spain, the locals are angry. Too late. In the last quarter of 20th century, they obtained profit from foreign visitors wanting to buy up property on their beautiful island. Suddenly, it occurred to Majorca that the island no longer belonged to them. Its 630,000 inhabitants(居民)are increasingly convinced that the 14 million visitors a year are far too much of a good thing. Water is in short supply, pollution is worsening, and there is no affordable housing left for them to buy.
22.__________________
Tourism is the world’s largest and fastest growing industry. In 1950, 25 million people traveled abroad; last year, it was 750 million. The World Tourism Organization predicts that 1.6 billion people, by 2020, will travel each year, spending over two trillion(万亿)US dollars.
23.__________________
The host country may not see many benefits. In Thailand, 60% of the $ 4 billion annual tourism income leaves the country. Tourists arrange by travel companies tend to stay at a big foreign-owned hotels, buying few local products. Mass tourism(团队旅游)usually leaves little money inside the country and most of the money goes to the airlines, the tour operators, and the foreign hotel owners, who are the final winners of tourism.
24.__________________
These days the industry’s most urgent question may be how to control the flow of tourist. A typical example of this is Italy, where great cultural centers like the Florence and Venice can’t handle all the tourists they get every summer. In Florence, it’s half inhabitants have to live with the pollution, traffic jam, and crime caused by 11 million visitors a year. Now there is talk about how to solve these problems, like raising hotel taxes, or even changing admission to some public squares. The idea is to discourage at least some visitors, as well as to pay for cleaning up the mess.
25.__________________
For many poorer countries, tourism may still offer the best hope foe development. The Vietnamese are doing their best to open up their country. Libya has paid $ 1 million for a study. They all wanted tourists. Yet if something isn’t done, tourism seems certain to become the victim of its success. Its effect on the environment is a major concern. For this reason, tourist organizations need to have second thoughts about what exactly they are trying to sell.

Develop Better Relationships with Neighbors
Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water:we don’t know how much we depend on them until we don’t have them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here is how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.
31._________ Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s names. But it’s okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you’ve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how their kids are (whether they’re babies or in college), whether they could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they think of the price at the local supermarket.
32._________ These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing of the past. But your new neighbors may be feeling lonely and unsure, especially if they’re far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.
33.__________ Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’ve finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking — and the talk will be good.
34.__________ If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a get-together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to everyone who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an idea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for appropriate food and music.
35.___________ In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor gorgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If you’re truly concerned, you’ll know when your neighbor needs some cheering up — a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when it’s needed. All it takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respect for their feelings.
31.根据空格后叙述的是“Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s names. But it’s okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you’ve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello.( 邻居们常常连彼此的名字都不知道。但是,即使你在隔壁住了好几年,你也可以主动打破沉默。大多数邻居都喜欢和墙那边的人闲聊。所以当你看到他们在院子里工作时,微笑,挥手,打招呼。)”可知,邻居之间不要太生分,一定要见面打声招呼。因此要开始交谈,因此C.Strike up a conversation(开始交流)符合语境,故选C。
32.根据“But your new neighbors may be feeling lonely and unsure, especially if they’re far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye. E.Reach out to the newcomers.(接触你的新邻居)符合语境,故选E。
33.根据本段叙述的是“Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’ve finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking — and the talk will be good. (你从邻居那里借来的任何东西,比如工具,只要修好了,一用完就归还。更换你、你的孩子或你的宠物弄坏或弄脏的任何属于你邻居的东西。确保你的车没有挡住他们的门口。这种随意的考虑行为会让你的邻居说话——而且谈话会很好)”可知给别人方便,同时给自己也带来了方便。因此避免引起不方便,因此F.Avoid causing inconveniences(避免引起不方便) 符合语境。故选F。
34.根据“If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house?.( 如果你重视与邻居的友谊,那就花时间与他们在一起。有什么比邀请邻居参加非正式的烧烤、泳池派对或假日开放日更好的会见方式吗?)”可知,可以邀请邻居在一起聚会、度假等,因此要抽出时间搞好关系,因此D.Make time for friendships.(为了友谊,要花一些时间)符合语境,故选D。
35.根据“In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. (在一段良好的关系中,重要的其实是小事。下大雨时,帮老邻居把邮件送来)”可知,要帮助邻居做一些小事。如:下雨天帮助老人去邮件。因此要关心一些细节小事,因此B.Care about the details.(关注细节) 符合语境,故选B。

Five Things Nobody Told Me about College
As I type this, I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5 things nobody told me about college:
___36___
Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to pursue within the first quarter of attendance. During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR), I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that’s what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.
___37___
In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take full advantage of the conferences, research, internships (实习), and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor’s office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.
___38___
College is where you meet your bridesmaids, groomsmen, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in. You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.
___39___
As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor (校长), asking him for support towards my initiatives (提议), met with the Vice Chancellors, and cooperated with my teaching assistants to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.
___40___
At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all of your tuition (学费) to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create stories that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.

A.The mistaken belief
B.The need for tolerance
C.Unpunctuality at dinners
D.Punctuality and confidence
E. Self-discipline and punctuality
F. Avoid anxiety by being punctual
41.
There is the belief that, if you arrive at an appointment late, you will be considered important. This is a mistaken view. Being unpunctual, we are not respectful of others ; we are interfering (扰乱)with another man's time. We must realise that keeping appointments or being punctual is a contract that is silently agreed and we are expected to respect this contract. It is only natural that we lose faith, trust and confidence in a person who is tardy(延迟的).
42.
To be punctual one has to have self-discipline(自律), and the lack of it affects others. A school boy or girl is unpunctual because he or she does not have the necessary human virtue of self-discipline. It is also a mark of disrespect for a system or an institution. Unpunctual people seldom realise that their habit cause problems to others. A salesman who is not punctual may not make a sale if he arrives late for an appointment. If one is late for a job interview, it is not likely that he will get the job.
43.
Being punctual, we can avoid anxiety. Imagine the anxiety if you do not want to be considered unpunctual. You will be anxious if you set out for a dinner late. The person who sets out late might be careless in driving. He will ignore traffic rules. A traffic jam, flat tyres, etc. can delay him further. Happy and calm is the man who takes all these possibilities into consideration and arrives at the appointment either early or on time.
44.
Many of those who attend dinners are notorious (声名狼藉的)for unpunctuality. They ignore the appointed time and leave their homes only after the fixed time. They are indifferent to the inconvenience caused to others. If the self-centred guest arrives late, the nine others at the table set for ten will have to wait. The host is put in an unpleasant situation and this man seldom thinks of the inconvenience caused to all -the waiters, the management staff, etc. It is necessary for us to think of others and be considerate to them.
45.
However, we cannot always be intolerant (无法容忍的) of tardiness, for ordinary living requires some tolerance. There can be a busy executive who fights to keep to his schedule. Such a person may be forgiven if he is late, but not those who are deliberately late to create impression.
In modern society, punctuality is a necessary virtue. It is a recognition of the importance of other people.
【答案】41.A 42.E 43.F 44.C 45.B

45.根据这段的句子“However, we cannot always be intolerant (无法容忍的) of tardiness, for ordinary living requires some tolerance.(然而,我们不能总是无法容忍迟到,因为普通的生活需要一些容忍)”以及下文内容可知这段的大意是:需要容忍,故选B。
A.Come in with something to say.
B.Prepare general comments.
C.Bring materials with you.
D.Don’t make them wait.
E. Have no fear.
F. Go it alone.
One of the best things you can do any time in the semester is go see the professor. So hoof on over to an office hour and have some one-on-one face time with someone who’ll help you master the material and improve your grade, to boot. But how should you have this conversation with the professor? Here are five insider tips about how to make that office hour really count:
46. No need to get all bent out of shape about going to see the professor. The professor would actually like to see you and answer your questions. Believe it or not, he or she is on your side and is eager to see you do well. And besides, he or she has seen many students stupider than you, so nothing you’re gong to ask will set the record for stupidity.
47. Even though you might feel more comfortable going with a friend or partner, the office hour will go better if it’s just you and the professor. You’ll get in more questions, the discussion will be tailored to what you need most help on, and two-party communication is almost always more productive than committee work. You friend can wait outside for the discussion.
48. If you can’t make the official office hours, most professors are willing to make individual, appointments to help you out. If you’re lucky enough to land such an accommodation, though, be sure you’re 100 percent on time. There’s nothing that ticks off a professor more than making him-or herself available for a custom office hour only to find that you don’t care enough to come on time. And besides, the professor might leave after ten minutes, which would make your trip a total loss.
49. If you’re meeting with the professor to go over a paper or test, or to ask questions about a particular lecture or reading, make sure you bring that paper or test, or your lecture notes or a copy of the article. The professor doesn’t remember the comments he or she wrote on your individual piece of work—though he or she will be able to recall them after just a brief glance at your work. And if you have your lecture notes or the article in hand, you and the professor will be able to examine specific points that are confusing to you, rather than just talking in a general way about the contents.
50. Office hours almost always go better if you bring a few specific questions to the meeting. It’s almost never good to start a meeting with general comments such as: “I didn’t understand what you said about [main topic of the course]”or “I couldn’t understand any of your lectures last week.” Much better is to come in with two or three conversation-starters, about a specific concept, point, or problem you didn’t understand. Keep in mind that in a fifteen-minute office hour (which is how long these things usually last), two or three questions are usually the most you’ll have time to discuss.
【答案】46.E 47.F 48.D 49.C 50.A
46.根据“No need to get all bent out of shape about going to see the professor. The professor would actually like to see you and answer your questions. Believe it or not, he or she is on your side and is eager to see you do well. (去见教授不必害怕。教授其实很想见你,回答你的问题。信不信由你,他或她是站在你这边的,渴望看到你做得好)”可知,去见教授不必害怕,其实教授也很想见到你,而且他们也很渴望你做的很好。所以E项“不要害怕”适合做本段的段首句。故选E。
47.根据“ Even though you might feel more comfortable going with a friend or partner, the office hour will go better if it’s just you and the professor. (尽管与朋友或伴侣在一起可能会让你感到更自在,但如果只有你和教授,办公时间会更好)”以及“You friend can wait outside for the discussion.( 你的朋友可以在外面等着)”可知,本段建议你应该是独自一个人去教授的办公室,这样效率会更高。所以F项“独自去吧”适合做本段的段首句。故选F。
48.根据“If you can’t make the official office hours, most professors are willing to make individual, appointments to help you out. (如果你不能安排正式的办公时间,大多数教授都愿意单独预约来帮助你)”以及“If you’re lucky enough to land such an accommodation, though, be sure you’re 100 percent on time.( 不过,如果你有幸获得这样的安排,一定要百分之百准时)”可知,和教授约定好时间后,一定要准时到达,不要让教授等待。
49.根据第二行“If you’re meeting with the professor to go over a paper or test, or to ask questions about a particular lecture or reading, make sure you bring that paper or test, or your lecture notes or a copy of the article. (如果你与教授会面是为了复习一篇论文或测试,或者就某个讲座或阅读提出问题,请确保你带来了那篇论文或测试,或者你的课堂讲稿或文章的副本)”可知,本段建议去见教授时要随身携带相应的材料。所以C项“随身携带材料”适合做本段的段首句。故选C。
50.根据“Much better is to come in with two or three conversation-starters, about a specific concept, point, or problem you didn’t understand.( 更好的方法是带着两到三个谈话的话题,谈论一个你不理解的具体概念、观点或问题)”可知, 本段主要建议在开始和教授的对话之前,首先要准备好一些想要讨论的问题,不理解的概念,观点等,也就是准备几个要说的东西。 故选A。
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A.Manufacturing industry in information economy
B.News in the age of information
C.Argument about individual accounts and their reliability
D.Be your own investigative journalist
E. Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers.
F. Information is presented in an entertaining way.
51.______
With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson.
52.______
There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he’s right about something they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrong they say “to some extent, Lord Copper.” It seems reasonable to suppose that, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them.
53.______
In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it is likely to be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story.
54.______
There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check.
55.______
Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.
51.根据下文“With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. 52.根据下文“There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. 53.根据下文“In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it is likely to be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story.”(在新闻不受官方控制的国家,新闻很可能由依赖广告的商业组织提供。新闻必须吸引观众,维持收视率。我怀疑,有些故事之所以能在电视上播出,只是因为碰巧有令人兴奋的画面可以展示。在英国,我们有小报,数百万人只是为了娱乐而阅读它们。历史背景或统计数据的空间越来越小,它们更难作为耸人听闻的故事呈现出来。)可知,人们为了娱乐阅读,即信息以娱乐方式呈现。entertainment和选项中entertaining都和娱乐有关, F项“Information is presented in an entertaining way. (信息以娱乐的方式呈现)”符合做本段小标题。故选F。
54.根据下文“There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check.”(有一种观点认为,随着互联网的普及和录制声音和图像的廉价技术,我们都将能够找到我们想要的确切信息。 argument和选项中的argument一致,C项“Argument about individual accounts and their reliability(关于个人描述及其可靠性的争论)”符合做本段小标题。故选C。
55.根据下文“Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.”(也许是时候做点什么了,我指的不仅仅是改变你对电视频道或报纸的选择。 D项“Be your own investigative journalist(做自己的调查记者)”符合做本段小标题。故选D。

D.Respect to All Team Members
E. Measuring Progress against Goals
F. Common Goals with Challenging Target
Team Building Means More than Throwing a Few People Together
“Teamworking” is found everywhere within just about every organization. You can’t get away from “teams” that are supposed to be able to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Or so the theory goes.
There are five measures that need to be taken before you can get the most out of a team:
66._________
There must be a clear reason for the team to exist. And all the members should realized the value and significance of what they are going to do. What they are hoping to achieve should be something achievable but at the same time tough and inspiring enough to attract the members and keep their motivation alive. What is more, they should also be well prepared for the possible difficulties they may come across in the process.
67._________
Team members must be able to express their opinions freely without fear of being criticized and they must have the feeling that their suggestions will be taken seriously. This is an important point because the team may need to resolve some complex or thorny issues. For example, it may discuss a sensitive topic. Should they keep their conclusion within the team or share it with other employees. This is an issue in itself that all the members should agree on frank discussion is required.
68._____________
It is easy to think that a junior team member may have less to contribute than more experienced ones. This is not only demoralizing or discouraging, it also makes no sense—people that have nothing to contribute should not have been selected for the team in the first place. Since they have become members of your team, you need to make sure that each of them has an opportunity to add his or her thoughts to discussions.
69.____________
Disagreements are natural and, in fact debate and discussion should be encouraged. A team made up only of “yes men” can make disastrous decisions that few people honestly agreed with in the first place. Consequently, there should be rules on how lengthy disagreements should be handled. For example, team meetings may not be the most appropriate place for a discussion that involves only two people, so “under-the-table” method may be effective.
70.___________
Most high-performing teams are well organized. A good organizer should be able to play to individuals' strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses. It should be someone who can act as a promoter and a constant reminder of what the team needs to achieve. He must ,above all, be skilled in sharing responsibility and setting tasks to others coaching them to achieve tasks, and providing constructive feedback on how the tasks went.
Team building isn't as simple as just throwing a few people together. It requires, much more, but motivating people is most essential. Successful team working is not marked by how much progress the team makes toward its goals, but by how confidently each of its members completes his or her assigned tasks with a sense of achievement and pride.
【答案】66.F 67.C 68.D 69.B 70.A
66.根据“There must be a clear reason for the team to exist. And all the members should realized the value and significance of what they are going to do. What they are hoping to achieve should be something achievable but at the same time tough and inspiring enough to attract the members and keep their motivation alive. What is more, they should also be well prepared for the possible difficulties they may come across in the process. (团队的存在必须有明确的理由。所有成员都应该意识到他们将要做的事情的价值和意义。他们希望实现的目标应该是可以实现的,但同时又足够艰难和鼓舞人心,以吸引成员并保持他们的动力。更重要的是,他们还应该为在此过程中可能遇到的困难做好充分的准备。)”可知,团队需要成员设立可能实现的目标和困难的目标。所以和F项“Common Goals with Challenging Target (普通的目标与挑战性目标)”一致,故选F。
67.根据“Team members must be able to express their opinions freely without fear of being criticized and they must have the feeling that their suggestions will be taken seriously. This is an important point because the team may need to resolve some complex or thorny issues. (团队成员必须能够自由表达自己的意见,而不必担心受到批评,并且他们必须感到他们的建议会被认真对待。这一点很重要,因为团队可能需要解决一些复杂或棘手的问题。)”可知,成员们可以在团队中自由发表意见,成员们共同商讨,所以和C项“Open Communication (公开交流)”一致,故选C。
68.根据“It is easy to think that a junior team member may have less to contribute than more experienced ones. This is not only demoralizing or discouraging, it also makes no sense—people that have nothing to contribute should not have been selected for the team in the first place. Since they have become members of your team, you need to make sure that each of them has an opportunity to add his or her thoughts to discussions. (人们很容易认为,资历浅的团队成员的贡献可能比经验更丰富的团队成员要少。没有什么贡献的人当初就不应该被选入团队——这不仅令人沮丧,而且毫无意义。因为他们已经成为你团队的成员,你需要确保他们每个人都有机会将他或她的想法加到讨论中。)”可知,不能根据经验,差别对待团队成员,应该一视同仁,尊重每个成员。所以和项D“Respect to All Team Members (尊重所有团队成员)”一致,故选D。
69.根据“Consequently, there should be rules on how lengthy disagreements should be handled. (因此,应该有关于如何处理冗长分歧的规则。)”可知,本段主要讨论如何解决分歧和冲突。所以和项B“Conflict Solving (解决冲突)”一致,故选B。
70.根据“Most high-performing teams are well organized. (大多数高效团队组织良好。一个好的组织者应该能够发挥个人的优势,帮助他们克服自己的弱点。它应该是一个可以充当推动者的人,并不断提醒团队需要实现的目标。最重要的是,他必须善于分担责任,将任务分给其他人,指导他们完成任务,并就任务的进展提供建设性的反馈。)”可知,本段主要介绍一个好的组织者具备的特点和领导能力。所以和项A“Leadership (领导才能)”一致,故选A。
Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A.When a child should learn to read
B.Why it is fun to teach a child reading
C.What if a child has reading problems
D.How you prepare a young child for reading
E. What is the best way to teach a child reading
F. Whether reading early promises later achievements
71.______________
Learning to read early has become one of those indicators — in parents' minds at least – that their child is smart. In fact, reading early has very little to do with whether a child is successful academically. Research has shown that difficulty with reading is often due not to inferior intelligence but to differences in the developmental wiring of each individual child. In some cases, there are neurological problems and developmental lags that can be overcome with proper training.
72.______________
Traditionally, American schools teach children at age six, but many schools begin teaching informally in kindergarten and pre-kindergarten. If parents start too early to encourage reading, and a child does not immediately succeed, the parent has a hard time relaxing and letting the child go at his or her own pace.
73.___________
Over the years, research has proved that the use of both the “whole language" method and the "phonic" method works best for a child to master reading. While the whole language approach, which includes reading to children and getting them interested in both the activity of reading and the story they are reading, is helpful, phonics must be taught. Children must be taught that one of the squiggles they see is a "p" and another a "b". Getting the print off the page requires a different ability than being able to understand the meaning of what is written.
74._______________
You can start developing the skills needed in reading at a very young age without putting any pressure on children. Besides reading to them, parents can start "ear training" their child by playing thyme games. This develops the child's ability to recognize different sounds. In reading to children, parents also can point to words as they go, teaching the child that the funny lines on the page are the words you are saying. All this should be a fun activity.
75._____________
Once a child is in school, the learning of reading is inevitably more serious. For children who have some kind of reading difficulty, you must get a professional diagnosis. While the teacher might say the child is merely disinterested but will get over it, disinterest or poor performance in reading can stem from a number of things, some being very specific learning disabilities that can be identified and worked on. But it is very tricky for parents to deal with their own child's learning disabilities.

How to Fight Smog
Illness and deaths due to air pollution have become common. But through the combined efforts, we can affect the quality of our air. Try these suggestions from Canadians for small changes we can make that will add up to cleaner air for us all.
___76___
One way to help decrease vehicle emissions is to learn where the products you buy come from. For instance, if you’re picking up a few apples, go for the ones from your area rather than such faraway places as Chile and New Zealand. This doesn’t necessarily mean favouring Canadian goods — if you live in B.C., buy a Washington apple rather than an Ontario one. Pay attention to labels, and you may be surprised by how far your sugar, vegetables and soap travel to get to you.
___77___
Another easy way is to use energy-saving bulbs rather than traditional ones — they may cost more, but not only do they use much less electricity, they last a lot longer, too. The most important places to place such bulbs are where you make the most use, such as motion sensor lights outdoors or lights that get left on for long periods of time. And don’t think you have to change every bulb in the house (although that would be nice) — just switching one or two will be amazingly different. (Encourage your friends to make the change as well!)
___78___
Not only does meat production consume large amounts of water and electricity, the animals eat a lot of food — and that food has to come from somewhere. In much of the world, valuable forest land is being cleared to make way for agriculture, leaving fewer trees to act as the planet’s lungs. In fact, there isn’t enough land on Earth to produce meat for everyone on the planet. Simply try having a vegetarian dinner a couple times a week, for instance — you’ll be reducing our need for cultivated land, not to mention harvesting the health benefits of eating less animal food.
___79___
You’ve probably seen those houses that have those huge trees next to their home. Whether by design or accident, those trees can reduce energy by up to 25%. You can plant trees to the south and west sides of your home. In this way, they can provide you with some significant shade and reduce your room temperature by as much as five degrees centigrade. After all, your home’s temperature all depends on the sun. The more shade the better when we’re looking at energy efficiency.
A.Buy locally.
B.Eat less meat.
C.Use mother nature.
D.Switch your lightbulbs.
E. Save energy in the house.
【答案】76.A 77.D 78.B 79.C
One way to help decrease vehicle emissions is to learn where the products you buy come from. For instance, if you’re picking up a few apples, go for the ones from your area rather than such faraway places as Chile and New Zealand.(帮助减少汽车尾气排放的一个方法是了解你购买的产品来自哪里。 A项Buy locally(在本地购买),符合文意,故选A。
Another easy way is to use energy-saving bulbs rather than traditional ones — they may cost more, but not only do they use much less electricity, they last a lot longer, too.(另一个简单的方法是使用节能灯泡而不是传统灯泡——它们可能更贵,但它们不仅用电量少得多,而且使用寿命也长得多)可知,这段推荐大家使用节能灯泡。D项Switch your lightbulbs(换掉你的灯泡),符合文意,故选D。
Simply try having a vegetarian dinner a couple times a week, for instance — you’ll be reducing our need for cultivated land, not to mention harvesting the health benefits of eating less animal food.(例如,简单地尝试每周吃几次素食,你将减少我们对耕地的需求,更不用说减少吃动物食品的健康好处)可知,这段主要建议人们少吃肉。
You’ve probably seen those houses that have those huge trees next to their home. Whether by design or accident, those trees can reduce energy by up to 25%.(你可能见过那些旁边有大树的房子。

So, don’t forget to eat something for the breakfast.
B.If you ate your last meal right before going to bed, the calories accumulated from this meal could be twice the amount accumulated from a same meal if you ate it another time during the day.
C.Many people stop doing exercise when they eat less. When you do this, your body will burn less fat. So even if people take in less calories, they get rid of less too. The balance is then unchanged.
D.People gain fat not from the food they eat, but from the number of calories in the food. For example, a bunch of vegetables has just one tenth the calories contained in a small bit of chocolate cake. So make sure you have adequate regular meals, but firmly say no to various snacks, milk tea or even instant noodles.

本段第一句“Order a clear soup, and have it before the main food.…”。
本段“Apples are full of fiber and water …Studies show that people who eat at least three apples or pears a day may lose weight,...” (Eat an apple or more a day)与本段内容吻合。

A. How to lose weight如何减肥?A项的关键词是:lose weight ;选项B. Eat an apple or more a day每天吃一两个苹果。关键词是:Eat an apple ;选项C. Talk it up 站起来说。
Look at your three middle fingers of your left hand. Is your index finger(食指)longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two the same height? Find the scenes that best matches your hand and see if it is an accurate description of your personality.
___87___.
If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, researchers shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You’re more likely to take risks, and you’re good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solves.
___88___.
If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and arrogant. You are not necessarily introverted, but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you’re trying to complete a project. You are a goal-oriented(面向目标的)go-getter who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you’re always wishing for more.
___89___.
If your index finger and ring fingers are roughly the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and pitiful. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a bad temper that can scold unexpectedly when you’re pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight, but God helps the person who pushes you into one!
A.Longer ring finger: The Hardworking One
B.Index and ring finger are the same length: The Peacemaker
C.Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One
D.Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker
根据“If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, researchers shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. ”可知,无名指较长的人善于交谈。故选D。
88.本文的结构是由一句话总领下一段,所以根据下一段的“If your index finger is longer than your ring finger”可知,本空是食指比无名指长的人的性格。故选C。
89.根据下一段“If your index finger and ring fingers are roughly the same length”可知,本空是食指、无名指一样长的人的性格。故选B。

___90___
If you normally get up at 7:30 a. m., try getting up at 7:00 a. m. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be the time that you use to exercise, to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.
___91___
Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones. The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won’t miss the important ones.
___92___
If your colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don’t just eat up time, but they also break your concentration.
Stay Focused on Your Work
A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When you’re working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you’re facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it’s easier to deal with.
A.Do the Important Tasks First
B.Take Breaks When Necessary
C.Reduce Interruptions
D.Get Out of Bed Earlier
【答案】90.D 91.A 92.C

A.Slow Down Your Life
B.Escape Now and Then
C.Separate Your Actions
D.Allow Yourself to Be Weak
E.Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying “No”
F.Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect
How to Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.
100.________
When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.
101.________
The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner.
If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it's not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.
102.________
“I can handle stress” is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with—until one day they break.
Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These signals can come from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases.
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, “I can't manage that.”
103.________
“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier.” This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, corners, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.
Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous:driving a car, crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
104.________
Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired(some people fall asleep after a few miles).
100.本段主题句是段首句“When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn’t even know you had. (当你专注于一件事的时候,你会发现你拥有自己从未意识到的能量。)”,集中于一个任务时,人的能量比自己知道的更大。其后作者用搬运两头猪的例子对任务分解的好处加以说明。本题答案选C“分解你的行动”。故选C项。
101.在本段中,作者首先用段首句“The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations.(所有职业的工作压力都在增加。)”提出了工作压力的原因,而在段尾则提出了解决该问题的办法“The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.(解决办法同样简单:拒绝接受私人生活或工作生活中的这么多工作任务。)”
102.本段第二句“People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with—until one day they break.(能够处理压力的人被赋予了越来越多的压力——直到有一天他们崩溃了。)” 在本段的最后一部分作者提出了对策“If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, ‘I can't manage that.’(如果你有这些症状,改变你的生活目标,降低你的压力耐受性。坦率地说:‘我做不到。’)”,其意可归纳为D选项:Allow Yourself to Be Weak“允许你自己脆弱”。故选D项。
对此,作者在本段第一部分的结尾提出“Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.(只有那些接受这一现实的人,才能过上真正充实的生活。)”
104.本段的主题句就是段首句“Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work.(成功的人都有他们自己可以逃离的空间,以便更好地工作。)”

A.The great impact and progress in genetic engineering
B.Worries about privacy protection
C.Worries about medical use of genetic engineering
D.Genetic knowledge helps to predict diseases
E.Genetic knowledge may not be properly used
F.The application of genetic engineering in the medical fields
111.__________
Current research into the human gene system is helping us understand why people have predispositions(易患某病倾向)to certain diseases.Knowing our genetic makeup can help us to judge whether or not we may be stricken by particular illness, such as cancer.Even before birth, we are able to do genetic screenings to determine what a child's genetic disorder will be.Scientists have already isolated and identified the genes responsible for the more than 4,000 genetic diseases that affect human beings.
112.__________
The implications of this knowledge are astonishing. In addition to predicting genetic predisposition towards diseases, gene therapies may provide new treatments or cures for serious diseases.Millions of people already use genetically engineered drugs to treat heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and strokes (中风). But with the research that is now being conducted, we may find cures to many more diseases. In the near future, genetic experimentation will also allow parents to select the traits of their children. Genetic traits that determine height, weight, eye and hair color will be able to be controlled, and many parents are excited about this potential.
113.__________
Many people, however, are unwilling to accept the possibilities genetic research allowsFor example, one reason some women do not use the largest genetic testing for breast cancer is because they are afraid they will be discriminated against.Another problem is that many people do not want to discover their weakness. What if they learn that they have a disease for which there are no medical cures? How will such knowledge affect their lives? Do people really want to know what they will die of?
114.__________
Many people believe that history has not always shown human decision-making to be bright when it comes to ethical(道德的)choices. Jeremy Rifkin is probably the most well known opponent of genetic engineering. He believes that humans are not responsible enough to experiment with genes and should not “play God” He asks, “Just because it can be done, does that mean it should be done?” He points out that our society will eventually look and act the same if parents select the traits of their children, and he questions the desirability of such a society.
115.__________
One of the fears expressed about genetic experimentation involves privacy. Already blood sample taken from patients in hospitals have been used for genetic research without the patients’ permission. Most people would agree that one’s health and genetic makeup are private concerns. But if insurance companies gain access to this information, it could have a large impact on insurance coverage or costs; if employers gain access to the information, it could have a large impact on hiring or promotion decisions. The possibilities for discrimination are obvious.
【答案】111.A 112.F 113.C 114.E 115.B
Current research into the human gene system is helping us understand why people have predispositions(易患某病倾向)to certain diseases.Knowing our genetic makeup can help us to judge whether or not we may be stricken by particular illness, such as cancer. Scientists have already isolated and identified the genes responsible for the more than 4,000 genetic diseases that affect human beings.
In addition to predicting genetic predisposition towards diseases, gene therapies may provide new treatments or cures for serious diseases.Millions of people already use genetically engineered drugs to treat heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and strokes (中风).
Many people, however, are unwilling to accept the possibilities genetic research allows可知很多人不愿意接受基因工程,接下来文章举例分析医疗上人们不接受的原因,所以此段讲述了人们对于基因工程运用医学的担忧。
Many people believe that history has not always shown human decision-making to be bright when it comes to ethical(道德的)choices. He points out that our society will eventually look and act the same if parents select the traits of their children, and he questions the desirability of such a society.
One of the fears expressed about genetic experimentation involves privacy.
A.A sense of humor is not an inborn ability.
B.A sense of humor can be developed in our life.
C.A sense of humor helps us from several aspects (方面).
D.A sense of humor means more than telling jokes.
E. A sense of humor can be expressed in many ways.
F. A sense of humor helps people to better enjoy life.
116._____ As awareness of the benefits of humor increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humor to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.
117._____ Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think that when it comes to a sense of humor, “either you’ve got it or you don’t.” This is false. What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.
118._____ The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humor. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don’t rush over and say, “That kid has a great sense of humor.”) Your sense of humor is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don’t be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself—then you will make them laugh too.
119._____ Humor includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humor because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, a sense of humor requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life’s situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definition of a sense of humor is “the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation”.
120._____ There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humor, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more is discovered about how humor benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humor when they are in a difficult situation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humor.
【答案】116.C 117.A 118.B 119.D 120.F
116.根据本段第三行“the power of humour to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.( 幽默对我们的身体、心理、情感和精神都有帮助)”,可知,幽默对我们各方面都很有帮助。 A sense of humor helps us from several aspects(方面).( 幽默感可以从几个方面帮助我们)与本段中心思想相符。故选A。
117.根据本段第一句“Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humour.( 许多人错误地认为我们天生就有幽默感)”,可知,很多人错误的认为幽默是一种天生的感觉,说明幽默不是天生的,是可以后天培养的。所以,A项A sense of humor is not an inborn ability.( 幽默感不是与生俱来的能力)符合上下文连贯。故选A。
118.根据本段中“Your sense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime.( 你的幽默感是可以用一生去培养的)”,可知,说明幽默是可以被培养的。所以,B项A sense of humor can be developed in our life.( 幽默感可以在我们的生活中培养)符合上下文连贯。故选B。
119.根据本段第一句“Humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling.( 幽默不仅仅包括大笑和讲笑话)”,可知,说明幽默很多方面的内涵,不仅仅是讲笑话。所以,D项A sense of humor means more than telling jokes.( 幽默感不仅仅意味着讲笑话)符合上下文连贯。故选D。
120.根据本段中“As more is discovered about how humour benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a difficult situation.( 随着越来越多的人发现幽默如何有益于我们的生活,更多的人将能够看到和享受幽默时,他们处于困境)”可知,说明幽默可以更好的让人享受生活。所以,F项A sense of humor helps people to better enjoy life.( 幽默感可以帮助人们更好地享受生活)符合上下文连贯。故选F。

Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.(本题请涂在答题卡上)
(D)
A.Different types of surgery operation.
B.Room for future development.
C.Amazing advancement in today’s surgery.
D.Changes in surgery specialization.
E. Negative response from the patients.
F. The improved safety of today’s operation.
76.__________________
The need for a surgery operation, especially an emergency operation, almost always comes as a shock to the patient and his family. Despite modern advances, most people still have an unreasonable fear of hospitals and operations. Patients do not often believe they really need surgery-cutting into a part of the body as opposed to treatment with drugs.
77._______________
In the early years of this century there was little specialization in surgery. A good surgeon was capable of performing almost every operation that had been devised up to that time. Today the situation is different. Operations are now being carried out that were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. The heart can be safely opened and its valves repaired. Blood vessels can be cleaned out, and broken ones mended or replaced. Even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to live. However, not one surgeon is qualified to perform every type of the modern operation.
78.__________________
The scope of surgery has increased remarkably. Its safety has increased too. Deaths from most operations are about 20% of what they were in 1910. And due to the high success rate of operations nowadays, the hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to as little as a week for most major operations. Most patients are out of bed on the day after the operation and may be back at work in two or three weeks.
79.____________________
Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible. They include the replacement of damaged blood vessels with simulated ones made of plastic; the replacement of heart valves, the transplanting of tissues such as the lens of the eye and the lung machined to keep patients alive during long operations. All these things open a hopeful vista for the future of surgery.
80.__________________
However, still large is the gap between our dream for the future and current technology. “Spare parts” surgery, the simple routine replacement of all worn-out organs by new ones, is still a dream of the distant future. As yet, surgery is not ready for such miracles. In the meantime, you can be happy if your doctor says to you, “yes, I think it is possible to operate on you for this condition.”
Despite modern advances, most people still have an unreasonable fear of hospitals and operations. Patients do not often believe they really need surgery-cutting into a part of the body as opposed to treatment with drugs.
The scope of surgery has increased remarkably. Its safety has increased too.
Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible.
However, still large is the gap between our dream for the future and current technology.

If you are thinking, “how to find yourself when you are lost?”, then the first thing to do is to have a rest from everything—work, personal life and all worldly things. Give time to yourself to think why you seem lost. Is it because of over work? Is it because you are not leading a life that you want to? Or is it because you are not satisfied with the people or things around you? Try to find answers to these questions to determine the cause behind your restlessness.
123.__________
For once, instead of being the way others want you to be, be yourself. Look within and find yourself in you. Think about the things that you would want to do if you didn’t have any family obligations or any money issues. Think about the kind of relationship you would want to be in, the place that you would like to stay in, the kind of lifestyle you would like to lead, if you didn’t have the society or people around you, judging all the time. If you really want to know how to find inner peace, then think, what you would want others to describe you as—an honest person? Or adventurous? Or loving, or realistic? Once you look within, you will know the answer and then try to be exactly that.
124.__________
Thinking deeply about the past, the time or situations when you were the happiest, is another way to find yourself .Think what you were doing or with whom you were, when you were the happiest. This will help you to identify things that you want to do in life that make you happy and also certain people whose company you enjoy.
125.__________
Knowing yourself and determining what you to do with your life will not come to you in a day or two. Discovering oneself is an ongoing process and it can take months or sometimes even years to truly find yourself. So, it’s important that you maintain a written record of all your feelings and thoughts, which you can go through at a later stage. Pour all your emotions and feelings about life in it and who knows may be one day going through it, you will find yourself.
126.__________
Once you have discovered what you want to do with your life, make a move for change and self improvement. Even if it means taking up small things such as dancing or painting, go ahead and do it. If you want a career change, plan and take steps so that it can take place smoothly. If you are stuck in a bad relationship and find yourself unable to mend it, break away. At the beginning, you may find yourself slightly unbalanced, but with time everything will be fine.
It is very important for you to truly find yourself, before it is too late. If you do not find yourself now, you will spend your life with somebody you do not even know, i.e. yourself.

A.Openness to the world

C.Star in your own movie
D.Often change your course
E. Learn how to make decisions
F. A new best friend (or love)
Nearly everyone likes traveling. Sometimes we will travel with our friends or families, but sometimes we will travel alone. Different ways for traveling will give you different feelings. Here are five benefits you can gain by traveling alone.
132.___
For me, traveling alone was one crash course(速成班) in making decisions–-just keep on rolling the dice(骰子) and see what comes up. Stop the research. Stop the analysis paralysis. Just keep choosing and living. In travel, everything is as it is, and there’s always another day to change course and choose again. A lot more happens in life when you stop worrying about what to do and just go.
133.______
The sense of risk and reward is what draws me to traveling alone. Traveling with a friend can be an adventure too, but the adventure quotient(指数) is usually higher when you are alone. You’re more vulnerable(脆弱) in the sense that you have to seek out company and help. Hey, just because I’m traveling alone doesn’t mean I can’t ask a hunky Carioca volleyball player to put sunscreen on the hard-to-reach places. That’s the advantage of traveling alone, isn’t it? Openness to adventure.
134._____
Traveling alone also teaches you to trust your fellow men and women. They are the ones who help you out when you are in need. I will never forget the man who stopped a long-distance bus for me in Colombia so he could go buy me Coke and toilet paper (I confessed to him that I had “digestive” issues right before we got on the bus). Then he invited me to his family’s home for lunch, and I still get emails from the family saying they will never forget me.
135._____
When you travel alone, the trip is completely yours. You are the star of your own movie. All the mistakes are yours to make, the accidental discoveries to enjoy, and the insights to savor. The recollection of the trip is entirely personal and private.
136.______
In a whole year of travel, I made a new best friend who I know will be a friend for life. We will be at each other’s weddings if we get married, we coach each other through our post-(or newly)-travel lives, and we hope to meet up for other adventures in Africa, Asia, and to dance tango in Buenos Aires. Our friendship is pure gold and we have both helped each other grow in countless ways. That openness to a new friend might not have been there if I had already been traveling with someone else. And who knows? You might meet the love of your life.

A.Decide to settle when growth is guaranteed.

FIVE WAYS TO KILL YOUR DREAMS
I dedicated the past two years to understanding how people achieve their dreams. When we think about the dreams we have, and the footprint we want to leave in the universe, it is striking to see how big of an overlap there is between the dreams that we have and projects that never happen. So I'm here to talk to you today about five ways how not to follow your dreams.
137.______
You know the story, right? The tech guy built a mobile app and sold it very fast for a lot of money. You know, the story may seem real, but I bet it's incomplete. If you go investigate further, the guy has done 30 apps before and he has done a master's on the topic, a Ph.D.He has been working on the topic for 20 years. This is really interesting. I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it's an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you've done in your life through that moment.
138.______
Constantly, people want to help out, right? All sorts of people: your family, your friends, your business partners, they all have opinions on which path you should take: "And let me tell you, go through this pipe." But whenever you go inside, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And you need to make those decisions yourself. No one else has the perfect answers for your life. And you need to keep picking those decisions, right? The pipes are infinite and you're going to bump your head, and it's a part of the process.
139._____
So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue, and everything is set — time to settle. When I launched my first book, I worked really, really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil. With that, over three million people downloaded it, over 50,000 people bought physical copies. When I wrote a sequel, some impact was guaranteed. Even if I did little, sales would be okay. But okay is never okay. When you're growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak. Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that's great already. But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions. That's why I decided, with my new book, to go to every single state of Brazil. And I can already see a higher peak. There's no time to settle down.
140.______
I constantly see people saying, "Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest." "Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn't go well." Or, "I can't find good talent; my team is so below expectations." If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, it may be hard to find talent. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one invested in your idea, if no one bought your product, for sure, there is something there that is your fault. Definitely. You need to get your dreams and make them happen. And no one achieved their goals alone. But if you didn't make them happen, it's your fault and no one else's. Be responsible for your dreams.
141._____
Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, they were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work. You could see that they were sweating and this was tough. And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak. Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? I'm going to celebrate, so, "Yes! We made it, we're at the top!" Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, "Okay, let's go down." Life is never about the goals themselves. Life is about the journey. Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it's a magical place where happiness will be all around. But achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not. The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That's the best way.

A.There are few statues in the Middle East.
B.Art is a good means for people to know about religions.
C.Artists express their feelings and opinions in their works.
D.People know more about our culture through learning art history.
E. Art is more objective than history itself.
142.
143.
A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology.
144.
145.
In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros – as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martins – depicted these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.
146.
147.
In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls.
148.
149.
By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are unholy. That’s why no figures can be found in or around places of interest in these regions.
【答案】142.D 143.C 144.B 145.A
A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes结合下文可知人们通过学习艺术史能够更好的了解文化,故选D。

A.Name of the same history textbook.
B.Benefits of sharing the same textbook.
C.The origin of the idea of the same history book.
D.The dislike for each other.
E. The same history textbook in France and Germany
F. Reasons for the hatred between France and Germany .
150.
High—school students in France and Germany are to learn modern history from the same textbook starting in the 2012 school year. It’s thought that the new book will help the next generation of the French and Germans develop a shared European identity. The book, called “Historie/Geschichte”, the French and German words for history, was co-written by historians from both countries. It will provide students from both sides of the Rhine(莱茵河) with the different explanations of their common history.
151.
The idea for the books came about in 2008, when high school students from both countries celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty(爱丽舍条约), a friendship agreement signed to show that France and Germany had buried their post—war differences. The students’ suggestion soon got strong support from both governments. “The big lesson is that hatred won’t last forever,” said French Education Minister Gilles de Robien. “This book allows us to create a shared future and build on our past,” he added.
152.
However, the French and Germans both have their own different origins, styles and culture. According to a survey by leading French newspaper Le Figaro (费加罗报),the French regard Germans as being highly disciplined and hard-working, while the Germans see the French as proud and shallow. So they don’t like each other.
153.
Conflicts between France and Germany have been existing over the years. The defeated power was robbed of its resources. Things were at the top in the two world wars, which further damaged relations. Many people lost their families, and hatred increased. Europe was seriously damaged by the conflicts.
154.
The wars’ bitter lessons told the two powers that they needed to unite in order to rise to their feet. Now France and Germany have put an end to their age-old rivalry(敌对状态),and they try to work together as the engines driving Europe forward. “The book is another milestone in Franco-German relations,” Peter Miler, a German official said. He said that it’s the first time that two nations have sat down and written history together. “If France and Germany can do it, why shouldn’t other countries follow suit?”

E. Think about what it means to respect someone.
F. Recognize when people disrespect you and take steps to stop it.
How to Respect Yourself
A lack of self-respect can prevent you from fulfilling your potential and developing healthy relationships. Here are some steps to help you know how to respect yourself.
160.__________ The qualities that we respect vary from person to person, and the way we express it varies from culture to culture. Generally, we respect people who have more experience and are more accomplished than ourselves. But there is also a basic level of respect that most people will agree is a right, and does not need to be earned. So think about what it means to respect others. Here are some widely agreed-upon signals of respect: You don’t steal from, harm, or insult them; you are honest with them; you listen to what they say, consider their opinions, and avoid interrupting them.
161.__________ We often do things for ourselves that we would never dream of doing for someone we care about. Whatever you believe to be respectful, apply it to yourself. Don’t harm yourself. Don’t insult yourself. Don’t steal from yourself. Be honest with yourself. Develop your own opinions and don’t be afraid to stand by them.
162.__________ A person with self-respect doesn’t allow others to treat them badly, and would rather not be around someone who is disrespectful. This might seem obvious, but there are many times when we accept being treated badly. When someone doesn’t give you basic respect, you need to be able to say, in one way or another, “You just disrespected me and that’s not acceptable! If you don’t respect me, I won’t spend time with you any more.” Can you say that, and mean it?
Can you turn your back on someone who’s clearly shown that they don’t respect you? Once you do, you’ll feel your sense of self-respect go up.
163.__________ When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you’ll not only feel better physically, but also feel a sense of pride. Respecting your body also means not insulting it for what it is, naturally. Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy. Focus on the things you can change and improve, and do them because it feels good.
164.__________ The more you know about yourself, the more you’ll see and appreciate how unique you really are. And you’ll respect yourself more. Discover your principles, personality, and talents. Stop waiting for other people’s approval and start developing your own standards.
Develop a unique and original way of expressing your opinions while at the same time being a good listener.

In the game of life, if it often seems like you’re on the losing end of things, you’re not alone. Life can be one giant confusing problem filled with ups and downs. When you feel like you’re experiencing more downs than ups, sometimes it helps to get a little tough love once in a while. That’s why we put together this list of 5 hard truths that will help you grow.
165.________
Great accomplishments in our lives normally don’t come easy. And if you think about it, would you have it any other way? There’s a basic psychological principle called instant satisfaction, which means that we expect to get rewards instantly. But sometimes you need to fight the impulses your brain throws at you and trust that the journey you’re on is the right one.
166.________
In life, there’s no shortage of doubters, haters, and pessimists. Overcoming this hard truth is simple: don’t listen. Choose to stick with your guns, trust your instincts, and forget about people who don’t support your goals and passions.
167.________
Listen, letting go is hard, especially if you’re a go-getter. But if you want to continue to grow, there are times when you need to give up and let things unfold how they’re meant to be, instead of controlling them. This doesn’t mean your mentality for everything should be “wait and hope”. You can still strive for greatness, but put the work in and then let go with complete faith that the universe will make things right for you. You’ll be amazed at how well it works.
168.________
Nothing can prepare us for the earth-shattering pain of losing a loved one. The hard truth of life is that it’s a viscous cycle. However, there’s something you can do to make losing someone you love a lot less painful: make them a part of your life right now. Don’t put off making that phone call or paying a random visit to a friend or family member you haven’t seen in a while. Treat every moment with your loved ones as if it’s your last, and you won’t have any regrets.
169.________
Suffering is part of life. But here’s the cool thing: it makes us stronger. There’s a randomness to how the world works that’s really hard to understand. We see evidence of this every day, and it can really make you question the future of mankind. How you choose to view the world is up to you. Just remember, the truth, however hard, will set you free.

Tips on How to Think Positive
170.
Your thoughts that consist of mental images and self talk are on automatic mode (状态). When you see, hear, smell or touch something, your mind comes out with its mental representation. You will then find yourself feeling something. To develop positive thinking, become aware of your feelings by checking them from time to time. Ask yourself what you were thinking and what caused the thought. Take note of what you were saying to yourself.
171.
How often do you say things such as “It happens every time” when something doesn’t turn out right? What do you say to yourself when you have made a mistake? Do you say things like, “Stupid of me. Here I go again?” Another tip on how to think positive is to catch yourself saying all these negative things. Demand your inner self to stop. You can say something such as, “Stop it. I am much better than that. The next time I will …”
172.
Your beliefs shape your thoughts. If you believe you can’t do something or if you have conditioned your mind to see unpleasantness in people or situations, you will see and experience them in your life. You can change your limiting and negative beliefs by challenging and questioning them. You can also do so by re-framing things or changing your view.
173.
Your thoughts determine what you focus on. You can force yourself to see and focus on the positive side of things, people and yourself. Develop an attitude of seeing things in a new or different perspective. Instead of thinking and seeing what doesn’t work, look at what works. Rather than seeing something as a problem or difficulty, consider it as an opportunity. Once you see things differently, you will think in a different manner.
174.
Get out in the open and get physically active. Make it a habit to exercise daily. Exercise affects your attitude about life. It is one of the ways to prevent or reduce stress and anxiety and maintain mental health. Practice healthy eating so that you can maintain your weight, prevent sickness and reduce the risk of major health problems. Read and listen to motivational and self-help books or recordings. Spending too much time sitting at home watching television and filling your mind with bad news and reality shows won’t help expand your thinking.

Shyness and feelings of insecurity towards the opposite sex are normal. It is part of growing up. Sometimes, adults even experience the same issues. If you’re a young girl and you find that you’re shy around boys, you’re not alone. However, it doesn’t mean that you always have to be that way.
There are things you can do to start overcoming your shyness. Here are approaches you can take to stop being boy shy.
175._______________You need to develop your self-confidence and self-respect. You need to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself every morning that you’re a good person and you have a lot of great qualities. Give yourself a mental pep talk (鼓舞士气的讲话) so you can start believing that boys and other girls will like you for who you are. It doesn’t matter if you are not beautiful, have low grades or still have baby fat. If you want other people to start liking you, you need to like and accept yourself first.
176._______________ Boys of your age are going through the same thing you are, so they also have feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. The boy may be shy too! The difference is that boys tend to cover up their shyness and insecurity by being more loud or lively. If you start thinking that you’re all really the same at heart, you’ll find that boys will be much more approachable.
177._______________If you would like to start winning friends and make an impression that you are approachable, smile when you make eye contact with someone. It’s a signal to the world that you are friendly and are open. When you smile at someone, the boy know that you are accepting him.
178._______________ When you’re trying to get over your shyness around boys, don’t go the other extreme and behave shamelessly. Just be yourself and don’t be something or someone you’re not. Don’t agree to things in the conversation just to make him like you. Express your own opinions. Be original. You also don’t need to dress in a strange manner to attract their attention.
179._______________ There are many things to develop your self-respect and make you feel good about yourself. If you want to stop being boy shy or get over your shyness in general, then you need to develop yourself. Find things that interest you and explore it. If you love music, take singing classes or join the choir (合唱队). If you love art, start painting. Don’t make your life move around boys because there are so many other things you should be focusing on. It’s OK to work on your shyness, but it’s shouldn’t be your goal in life to get a boyfriend.
It’s up to you to get over your shyness around boys. Relax and take a deep breath so you know you look your best. Smile and be approachable so you don’t have to be boy shy anymore.

A.Who does freelancing?
B.The advantages and disadvantages of freelance
C.The definition of freelance
D.Key to freelance success
E. What is freelancing really like?
F. The best way to develop a career
189.______________________
Freelance is a word that goes back to medieval times when it was used to describe soldiers who sold their skills to those prepared to pay their market rate. Today it’s an increasingly common way of working for people in a range of occupations and appeals to many who feel constrained by corporate culture.
190.______________________
What you gain is freedom of movement, what you can lose is a sense of belonging. You can end up feeling isolated from normal support networks, because suddenly you are responsible for your own welfare, training, safety, career development, equipment, professional updating and a thousand other things. It is easy to remain unaware of these things in the relatively cosseted existence of full-time employment. So before you leap up into this exciting and potentially rewarding way of working, stand back and take a look at the risks.
191._____________________
Freelancing has always been a common way of working for writers, artists and performers, but the range of occupations with a substantial number of freelancers is growing steadily. Anyone with a marketable skill can choose to go it alone. Websites offer a free directory listing for those with skills to sell. Their categories include accountants, healthcare consultants, landscape architects and computer trainers. Areas of work that have problems recruiting staff are always keen to employ freelancers.
192.______________________
Being a freelance is different from other forms of self-employment—you still work for an employer or several employers but have to develop a completely different set of relationships with them. Employers are now your customers, you are their supplier. You have to become indispensable to them, providing solutions to their problems, some of which they may not even realize they have. In many ways you have to behave like their dream employee, being more willing and available than you may have got used to while in a “proper job”.
193.______________________
You also have to be aware of, and sensitive to ,the fact that you can be seen as a threat by your customer’s conventional employees, who may regard you as taking work they can do. Successful freelancing relies on the co-operation of everyone you come into contact with. Work that brings you into conflict with an existing workforce can be more trouble than it’s worth.
