Given that breathtaking views await around every green comer, it's no surprise that the UK is home to a treasure of great journeys.
Route No. 1
This has been the world's shortest flight - just 53 seconds. For this journey, on board there is only room for the pilot and eight passenger seats. If it is busy, you may end up in the co-pilot seat up front. The experience of this great journey is a short, but dramatic one. You zoom off the runway and almost instantly the plane starts to land.
Route No. 2
The Caledonian Sleeper, a train with a mission to sweep you from London all the way to the Scottish Highlands, just as everyone else is going to bed, has all the drama of a great journey. The experience begins with a relaxing drink. The Caledonian Sleeper includes options for double beds and shower rooms, plus the Club Bar - open to anyone with a room rather than a seat. In the morning, guests can either have breakfast delivered to their cabin, or enjoy a cooked Highlands breakfast.
Route No. 3
The UK's another overnight sleeper train, from London to Cornwall, operates six nights a week, and is best enjoyed in a twin or single sleeper compartment (隔间). The journey takes you from London at night, delivering you to the very edge of the UK by morning, where you'll be served a bacon roll shortly after waking. The first sleeper train on this route ran in 1877. In 2018, the train was refurnished with buffet counters.
Route No. 4
The Snowdon Mountain Railway bills itself as an “unforgettable adventure", soaring you off towards the summit of the highest mountain in Wales. The journey takes you past surging waterfalls to look out for the world s fastest bird. By the way, the summit station and visitor centre are currently being refurnished and will be open to service in 2023.

The cat Bubby showed up on the doorstep of Wiseman's father, Abbott, who was putting out food for a different stray cat (流浪猫).
Wiseman recalls that one day her father found a little three-legged cat in the kitchen eating the other cat's food. Dad was kind of really surprised by this animal. It melted his heart to see this little cat with three legs looking after himself. Since then, her father and Bubby formed an unbreakable bond. They helped each other: Bubby got food and frequent visits to the house, while Abbott got a companion through a time of change in his life.
After Abbott died in 2017, Bubby's visits to her family home stopped. The family couldn't locate Bubby for almost two years until they saw his furry face in an online post.
According to volunteer McLeod, Bubby was brought to the shelter after a community effort to find the three-legged cat. McLeod remembers when she met Bubby for the first time, he was laying face down in his cage, exhausted. McLeod featured the cat in an online post, asking anyone if they knew of the animal's history. Wiseman leapt at the opportunity to reunite with Bubby. Once Bubby was recovered enough to leave the shelter, the two decided McLeod would adopt Bubby and give him his forever home.
In a twist of fate, Wiseman revealed McLeod had actually met Abbott and Bubby previously, but had forgotten the encounter. “It's like it came full circle. It was a very sad thing that turned into a beautiful thing. " Wiseman said. Wiseman still visits Bubby whenever she can, often helping with the cat's special food and treats. Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage that can signal the type of bacterial infection it s protecting, just like a traffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics (抗生素)and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.
It's easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn't have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What's more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what's happening with the infection, if there's an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light.
We've been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science-like the nanofibre mesh (纳米纤维网)that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there's the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can do while it's protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what's going on too.
28. Which of the following advantages is NOT mentioned for the smart bandage?
A. It prevents bacterial resistance.
B. Much time and cost can be saved.
C. Bacterial infections can be detected soon.
L. Antibiotic can be released if a DS light shows.
29. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A. The advantages of the new bandage outweigh those of traditional ones.
B. A person with the smart bandage can cure himself of any wound.
C. Doctors can make a diagnosis with the help of the new bandage.
D. The new smart bandage still has a lot of drawbacks.
30. What does the underline word “novel” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A Useful.
B. New.
C. Virtual.
D Fashionable.
31. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Prevention of Abuse of Antibiotics
B. A Successful Test on Bacterial Infection
C. Introduction to A Color-changing Bandage
D. A New Treatment on Drug-resistance Bacteria
D
Vertical farming, as the name suggests, is a form of agriculture that is specifically designed to help agricultural production inside vertical structures like buildings.
It is a revolutionary, and arguably more sustainable, method of farming for several reasons. For example, it tends to require much less water than regular farming by some estimates up to 95% less. It also takes up less space and has little or no impact on local natural soils. Generally speaking, vertical farms can be operated without the use of pesticides that are potentially very damaging to the environment. Because of the controlled conditions provided by vertical farms, all-year-round growing of crops is also usually made possible.
Vertical farms tend to consist of one of several models, ranging from wooden shelves to greenhouses that are able to produce enough food for entire communities. Some consist of specially designed towers with plant cups. For larger, purpose-built vertical farms, hydroponic (水培)systems are often employed to help control the indoor climate all year round. Other aspects of vertical farms can also be regulated, including automated control of temperature and light A high level of control is usually vital for the success of the farm, as failure to maintain specific conditions can lead to the loss of entire crops.
If you are interested in starting your own vertical farm, you have a few options. For example, for domestic-scale kind of strategies, simple vertical farms can be created using old pallets (托盘),or other custom-made solutions. For larger-scale vertical farming options, you can either directly invest in existing vertical farms, or raise enough money to set up your own. This will, obviously, require large amounts of money, but the potential for such solutions is predicted to rise dramatically over the coming years.
32. What can we learn about vertical farming?
A It tends to require little water.
B. It helps enrich the local natural soil.
C. It may potentially harm the environment.
D. It may make year round crop planting a reality.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How vertical farming works.
B. What vertical farms produce.
C Why vertical farms appear.
D. Where vertical farms exist.
34. What can be the key to a successful vertical farm?
A. Various models.
B. Financial support.
C. Indoor temperature.
D. High-leveled control.
35. What's the writing purpose of the text?
A. To set a new standard of farming.
B. To introduce a new way of farming.
C. To present modest reform in farming.
D. To raise money for larger vertical farms.
