Football is, I suppose, the most popular game in England; one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting and cheering for one side or the other.
One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has photographs of them and knows the results of a large number of matches. He will tell you who he expects will win, and his opinion is usually as valuable as that of men three or four times his age.
Most schools in England take football seriously—much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all-important, and games are left for private arrangements. In England, it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy's mind with facts in a classroom. Education also means character training. One of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working selfishly for himself alone. The school therefore arrange games and matches for its pupils(学生). Football is a good team game. It is good exercise for the body. It needs skills and a quick brain, It is popular and it is cheap. As a result, it is the school's favorite game in the winter.

    C. only by boys D. only by rich people

    A. people have little knowledge of football B. even small boys know a lot about football
    C. girls are more interested in football than boys D. children are not interested in football at all
    30. There is a great difference bet wean schools in England and those in Europe in that _________
    A. European schools take football seriously
    B. schools in England care little about lessons
    C. European schools often arrange football matches for their pupils
    D. schools in England believe character training to be part of education
    31. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true of the football game?
    A. It is not expensive. B. It needs teamwork.
    C. It makes people selfish. D. It is good exercise for the body.
    D
The number of weather-related disasters has increased by five times over the past 50 years, the latest report by the World Meteorological(气象) Organization(WMO) said on September. However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of death from these hazards has been almost three times less.
According to the WMO, from 1970 to 2019, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50 percent of all disasters. Among the top 10 hazards that led to the largest loss of human life during this period were droughts, storms, floods and extreme temperatures. “That means more heat waves, drought and forest fires such as those we have observed recently in Europe and North America. We have more water vapor(水蒸汽) in the atmosphere, which is worsening extreme rainfall and deadly flooding. The warming of the oceans has affected the frequency and area of existence of the most intense tropical(热带的) storms.”
“Economic losses are increasing as exposure increased. But behind the statistics lies a message of hope. Improved multi-hazard early warning systems have led to a significant reduction in deaths. Quite simply, we are better than ever before at saving lives,” Taalas said.

    A. Disasters connected with weather have gone up.
    B. The number of weather-related disasters has decreased.
    C. The number of deaths from hazards has been increasing.

    33. What will happen according to Petteri Taalas?
    A. There will be more extreme weather. B. Extreme rainfall will no longer exist.
    C. Water vapor in the atmosphere will go down. D. Humans will defeat extreme weather in the-end.
    34. What is hopeful behind the bad news?
    A. Improved warning systems will save economic losses.
    B. Economic losses are going down as exposure increased.
    C. More lives will be saved thanks to early warning systems.

    Text 10
My name is Ellen and I live in a flat in London. I don't live with my parents, They're living in the countryside. An advantage of city life is having everything you need so close at hand. Living beside the underground station means I don ' need a car to get around, which saves me money. I can take the underground to work or go to visit my friends. Also, there are shopping centers and cinemas everywhere. Of course, London, like any large city, has its problems, too. Londoners don't chat on the train or the bus and there is much less sharing spirit than in the country, where my parents live. In fact, they don't understand how I can put up with the noise and pollution. However, I see that as a small price to pay. I'm here in the heart of the city. As a famous poet once said, “He who is tired of London is tired of life.”
