Lionel Messi, who shone at the Qarta World Cup, is a well-known name even to those with no interest in sports. Even though he is shorter than most of his teammates, he rises above his opponents with adept skills and a legendary ability to score goals for his team.
Lionel Andres Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in the warm city of Rosario, Argentina. He was the third child in a tight-knit(亲密的)hard-working family who loved football. Naturally, young Leo developed a passion(热爱)for football himself.
At four years old, Leo joined the Grandoli local club, where he was coached by his father. When he was eight, Leo joined the talented Newell Old Boys. Football soon became as important as the air he breathed. Messi practiced day in and day out, skipping outings with his friends to train at home before a game. The sport made him quite happy and motivated and he began to dream of becoming a professional footballer.
But as he grew older, his height remained the same. His concerned parents eventually took their 11-year-old son to a doctor, who broke the news that the boy suffered from a growth hormone deficiency(生长激素缺乏). This meant he was physically unable to grow unless he received special treatment, which would last three years and cost $1, 500 per month.
Stories of a 13-year-old boy who had similar talents to legendary Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona had reached the ears of FC Barcelona's technical director, Carles Rexach. Intrigued, he sent an offer to the Messi family. If he passed, the club would cover his medical bills, but on the condition that Messi moved to Spain. So, in September 2000, Leo and his family uprooted their lives and flew across the Atlantic to Barcelona.

As we all know, China is a large country. That is the reason why there are so many different dialects in China. It is hard to guess how many dialects actually exist. In general, dialects can be roughly classified into the following seven large groups: Putonghua (Mandarin), Gan, Kejia(Hakka), Min, Wu, Xiang. and Yue (Cantonese). Each language group contains a large number of dialects. These are the Chinese languages spoken mostly by the Han people, which represents about 92 percent of the total population. The rest are non-Chinese languages spoken by minorities in China, such as Tibetan, Mongolian and Miao.
Even though the dialects from the seven groups are quite different, a non-Mandarin speaker usually can speak some Mandarin, even if with a strong accent. This is largely because Mandarin has been the official national language since 1913.
Despite the large differences among Chinese dialects, there is one thing in common-they all share the same writing system based on Chinese characters. However, the same character is pronounced differently depending on which dialect one speaks. Let's take “wo” for example, the word for “I” or “me”. In Mandarin, it is pronounced “wo”. In Wu, it is pronounced “ngu”. In Min, “gua”. In Cantonese, “ngo”. You get the idea.
A distinguishing (显著的)feature across all Chinese languages is tone. For instance, Mandarin has four tones and Cantonese has six tones. Tone, in terms of language, is the pitch (音高)in which syllables(音节)in words are pronounced. In Chinese, different words stress different pitches. Some words even have the pitch variation in one single syllable so they have different tones and pronunciation. Thus, the tone is very important in any Chinese dialect. There are many cases when words spelt in pinyin are the same, but the way it is pronounced changes the meaning. For example, in Mandarin, 妈(ma)means mother, 马(ma)means horse, and 骂(ma)means to scold.
28. What is Paragraph One mainly about?
A. China has a vast area. B. People in China speak seven dialects.
C. Dialects are rich in China and hard to count. D. Mandarin make up 92 percent of Chinese population.
29. How does the writer explain the same character has different pronunciations?
A. By explaining reasons. B. By stating facts.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
30. What does the underlined word “variation” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Pausc. B. Speed. C. Power. D. Change.
31. Why does the writer mention mother, horse and scold at the end of the passage?
A. To prove the important role of tone. B. To discuss the single syllable of pinyin.
C. To stress the different pitch of Cantonese. D. To show the distinguishing feature of Mandarin.
D
In July 2017, Hoh Xil became a world heritage (遗产)site and there live more than 70, 000 Tibetanantelopes. . Every year, pregnant(怀孕的)Tibetan antelopes migrate(迁徙)to Hoh Xil between the end of May and early June to give birth and leave with their children around August. Zonag Lake at the heart of Hoh Xil is known as the “delivery room” for the species.
About 40 female Tibetan antelopes with three young were spotted crossing the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Saturday. Experts say that in recent years, the number of young Tibetan antelopes among the migrating groups consisted of between a fifth and quarter of the population.
“In the early stage of migration, Tibetan antelopes face a high risk of falling prey to predators(盗猎者)so the number of young Tibetan antelopes is relatively small, and there may even be none,” said Lian Xinming, an associate research fellow at Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
According to research. the number of Tibetan antelopes that migrate back has been rising. A total of5, 952 Tibetan antelopes were spotted migrating in 2020, and 233 more in 2021. “This year's migration season is expected to finish in early September. The population is expected to continue to increase,” Lian said.
Tibetan antelopes are mostly found in Tibet autonomous region, Qinghai province, and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The species is under first-class state protection in China.
In the 1980s, the Tibetan antelope population declined sharply from 200. 000 to 20. 000, due to illegal hunting. It has recovered thanks to the country's efforts to improve its habitat and crack down on poaching(盗猎).
To make sure the species go back to their habitats safe and sound, the reserve's management bureau has staff monitor their migration. When they come over in large groups, they temporarily close some sections of the road to make way for the animals and prevent them from having interactions with humans.
32. What can we learn from the text?
A. Tibetan antelopes migrate to Hoh Xil to find mates.
B. Baby Tibetan antelopes are born in Zonag Lake.
C. Female Tibetan antelopes made up a fifth of the population.
D. Migrating Tibetan antelopes' number is 6, 185 in 2021.
33. What does Lian Xinming think of the future of Tibetan antelopes?
A. Promising. B. Concerning. C. Perfect. D. Unpredictable.
34. Why are some sections of the roads closed sometimes?
A. To offer delivery place. B. To catch unlawful predators.
C. To stop poaching Tibetan antelopes. D. To avoid animals meeting people.
35. What is the best title of the passage?

This is an unbelievable real Christmas story: one of courage, life and passing on love.
Twenty-five years ago, Ray Anderson, a single parent with a one-year-old son, was returning home after giving out gifts to the needy people on Christmas Eve when he witnessed a terrible accident which took place when the driver of a truck ran a red light and collided (碰撞)with the car of Sandra Jenkins. The influence of the collision killed Sandra instantly, but her three-month-old daughter was left trapped upside down in the burning ear seemingly doomed to a fiery tomb.
While others looked on in horror, Anderson jumped out of his car and crawled (爬)into the car through the broken window to try to free the baby. Seconds later, the car was totally on fire, but Anderson was unexpectedly able to pull the baby to safety. While the child came out of the accident with no injuries, Anderson suffered third degree burns over 80 percent of his body.
Two days later, Anderson died, but his heroic act was published widely in the media. Anderson's son was soon raised by relative, and the family moved to the East Coast.
The most unbelievable part of this story unfolded only last week. Karen and her fiance(未婚夫), Aaron, were looking through some old boxes in the basement of Karen's home when they came across some old newspapers. “This is me when I was a newborn baby. My mother was busy with some volunteer work when the accidnet happened. I was rescued from a burning car, but my mother died in the accident,” explained Karen. Although Aaron knew Karen's mother had died years earlier, he never fully understood the situation until he started to skim over the newspaper article. The drinks were fantastic! The hotel food was either tasteless or too hot, but the waiters were all friendly and knowledgeable at least. John decided he wanted to take a trip to a museum, so I went along. Actually, I didn't really like it. It was pretty disappointing. I surely preferred being near the ocean. The beach was amazing and I went there several times. In the second week, John went off on his own into the mountains, but I stayed in the hotel. I once tried going on an elephant ride, but it was terrible. Elephants frightened me, so I gave up. The two weeks went by so quickly. We got back last night and, all in all, I think it was a great trip, really relaxing. I'm so glad we entered the competition.
