Safety is the usual choice for global travelers when faced with a menu of unknown dishes. But a great meal crosses all cultural boundaries, and sharing the food of your host country is the best way to connect with its people and culture.
    Italy
Pizza is not a new thing for you. But locals say there’s something in the water in Naples that ensures you will never have a pizza like it anywhere else in the world. If you’re lucky enough to be around during the autumn truffle(松露) season, try uova con tartufi — fried eggs with truffle oil. It can’t be found on restaurant menus, but chefs from Tuscany and Umbria will know what you mean if you ask for it.
    Spain
If you’re anywhere in Spain, you must try Manchego. It has a strong flavor, and enjoying it along with bread, served with olives and meat or accompanied by red wine makes a perfect choice. Barcelona is part of Catalunya, a region in Spain that has a very special food culture. Must-haves include patatas bravas, crisp(脆的) fried potatoes with a secret sauce, and mel i mato, a curd cheese and honey dessert cooked in a pot. Even if you’re rushing on an overnight trip through Barcelona, don’t leave without trying them!
    Russia
The best meals are worth the money in Russia. If you see solyanka on the menu, don’t hesitate to order. This salty, sour and often spicy soup combined with meat or fish and topped with a Russian sour cream, is delicious. Borscht and pelmeni are common in Russia, but experiment with different varieties. If you find the time, a culinary(美食的) side trip in search of Azerbaijaini plov, a spiced rice dish cooked with meat and dried fruit, is worth the journey.
    1. If you are a cheese lover, you can choose ________.
    A. Manchego B. uova con tartufi
    C. solyanka D. mel i mato
    2. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. You must eat Manchego with red wine.
    B. The sweetness of water gives Naples’ pizza a special flavor.
    C. You may spend quite some money trying best food in Russia.
    D. Uova con tartufi is not allowed to be put on Italian restaurant menus.
    3. In which part of a magazine will you most likely read this passage?
    A. Global Economy. B. Life on the Go.
    C. Entertainment. D. A Bite of Europe.

Following Christmas dinner, my family was relaxing around the kitchen table. We were discussing the delicious meal we had just had. Dad had risen from his chair and was standing nearby.
My nephew began playing with his new basketball around the table. Upon nearing Dad, he stopped. With shaking, wrinkled hands, Dad had reached out for the ball. He did not speak, and the boy looked at us in confusion. After a few seconds, he carefully passed the ball to Dad. I watched my father closely to see what he would do. A playful smile appeared on his face. Holding the ball and reaching forward, Dad bounced it on the floor and then caught it.
This action was repeated. Smiling with satisfaction, he then turned towards us. Gently tossing(投掷) the ball away, Dad began a game of catch.
The ball continued to be passed through pairs of outstretched hands. Cries of “Over here!” rang through the warm kitchen. Dad’s active participation in this game was remarkable to me, since he had dementia(痴呆). This disease had robbed(剥夺) him of many memories and the recognition of people, places and points in time. Despite this, Dad clearly recognized the ball and what he could do with it.
In my younger years, playing with Dad was not often. He worked hard and provided for us, but never showed nor shared much emotion. His favorite game was chess, which he once taught me how to play. But after his illness, connecting moments between father and son had been few before he took the basketball.
I’m not sure how long we played the game. Watching the clock was not important. Dad happily led us until he began to tire. I know that that moment will certainly last forever. This Christmas, Dad gave me a special memory — one that I will always treasure.
    4. How is the second paragraph organized?
    A. By offering analyses. B. By providing details.
    C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
    5. Why did father’s active participation in the game surprise the author?

    B. He was able to recognize his family members clearly.
    C. He could have a rest and relax by playing the ball game.
    D. He could recognize the ball and react accordingly.
    6. What can we learn about the author’s father?
    A. His sickness made it difficult for him to recognize people.
    B. He worked hard and liked to share his feelings with his family.
    C. He taught the author how to play basketball and the game of catch.
    D. When the author was young, he spent a lot of time playing with him.
    7. What would be the best title for this text?
    A. A Son’s Love B. Father’s Smiles
    C. The Happiness of a Sick Father D. Unforgettable Memories at Christmas

We recognize our friends’ faces. And we’re not alone. Many social animals can identify individuals of their own species by features of their faces. That's important, because they need to be able to change their behavior depending on who they meet. And a recent research has shown that some species of monkeys, birds, and domesticated(家养的) animals can even tell different faces apart by looking at photographs alone.
Ethologist Léa Lansade of the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment did an experiment to find out how well horses can recognize individual people in photographs.
She and her team first taught the horses how to “choose” between two side-by-side pictures by touching their noses to a computer screen. The horses were then shown photos of their present keeper alongside faces of unfamiliar humans. They had never seen photos of any of the people before. The horses correctly identified their current keeper and ignored(忽视) the stranger’s face about 75% of the time. In fact, even though the horses didn't get it right every single time, they were at least as correct in picking out their earlier keeper as they were at identifying their present one.
The results suggest that not only can horses differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar human faces, they also naturally understand that photographs are two dimensional representations(二维呈现) of real life, without any other intimations such as smell or sound. And they’re even better at this than our oldest animal partner, the domestic dog.
In addition, horses seem to have a strong long-term memory for human faces, like their long lifespan and history of domestication. In future experiments, the researchers would like to test whether looking at photos of people that they have had bad experiences with in the past might cause horses to act anxious or even avoidance. So maybe think twice before doing anything that might give a horse a long face.
    8. Why did researchers show the horses both the keeper’s photos and the strangers’?
    A. To find out what horses would do in the experiment.
    B. To see why horses could recognize the keeper in the pictures.
    C. To test whether horses could recognize the strangers in pictures.
    D. To study to what degree horses can make out different people in pictures.
    9. What does the underlined word “intimations” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Clues. B. Differences.
    C. Photographs. D. Senses.
    10. What are researchers still uncertain about?
    A. Whether horses can live longer than other animals.
    B. Whether horses can remember human's faces for a long time.
    C. Whether horses can show their emotions at the sight of photos.
    D. Whether horses are better at recognizing photos than other animals.
    11. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To talk about animals’ species.
    B. To explain animals’ facial features.
    C. To show animals’ behaviour for adaptation.
    D. To introduce animals’ ability to identifying faces.

If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London(UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的).” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learnt English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
    12. What is mainly talked about in this passage?
    A. Man has a great ability of learning a second language.
    B. Language learning is closely connected with maths study.
    C. The study done by the researchers from UCL is very successful.
    D. Studying a foreign language can improve man’s ability to think.
    13. Why does the writer mention “exercise” in the second paragraph?
    A. To suggest language learning is also a kind of physical labor.
    B. To make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well.
    C. To prove that one needs more practice when he/she is learning a language.
    D. To show the significance of using the language when you learn a language.
    14. What does the underlined word “bilinguals” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
    A. An active foreign language learner.
    B. A person who can speak two languages.
    C. A researcher on foreign language learning.
    D. A person who is good at learning foreign languages.
    15. What can we know from the scientific findings?
    A. The ability of learning a second language is changing all the time.
    B. The experience of learning a second language has a bad effect on brain.
    C. The earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is.
    D. There is no difference between a later second language learner and one without a second language.

As a sixth grader, I found it hard to fit in and make friends.
Our teacher had assigned(布置) “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and picked out one. By the middle of the week, everyone had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package with a box of powder(胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. What’s worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks(评论) and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean(刻薄的) things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift, you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum!”
Hearing Janet’s words, I made up my mind to say sorry to her.

    4. B    5. D    6. A    7. D
根据第二段“My nephew began playing with his new basketball around the table. Holding the ball and reaching forward, Dad bounced it on the floor and then caught it.(我侄子开始围着桌子玩他的新篮球。
根据第四段“Dad’s active participation in this game was remarkable to me, since he had dementia(痴呆). This disease had robbed(剥夺) him of many memories and the recognition of people, places and points in time. Despite this, Dad clearly recognized the ball and what he could do with it.(父亲积极参与这个游戏对我来说很了不起,因为他患有痴呆症。这种疾病夺走了他的许多记忆和对人、地点和时间点的认识。尽管如此,父亲还是清楚地认出了这个球,知道他能用它做什么。)”可知,作者的父亲患有痴呆症,但是他还认得篮球,知道怎么玩。故选D项。
    6. 细节理解题。根据第四段“Dad’s active participation in this game was remarkable to me, since he had dementia(痴呆). This disease had robbed(剥夺) him of many memories and the recognition of people, places and points in time.(父亲积极参与这个游戏对我来说很了不起,因为他患有痴呆症。这种疾病夺走了他的许多记忆和对人、地点和时间点的认识。)”可知,患有痴呆症的父亲很难认出谁对谁来。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I know that that moment will certainly last forever. This Christmas, Dad gave me a special memory — one that I will always treasure.(我知道那一刻肯定会永远持续下去。

根据第三段“The horses correctly identified their current keeper and ignored(忽视) the stranger’s face about 75% of the time.(在75%的情况下,这些马能正确识别出它们现在的主人,并忽略陌生人的脸)”可知,科学家通过这种方式来验证马能否识别熟脸。
根据第四段“The results suggest that not only can horses differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar human faces, they also naturally understand that photographs are two dimensional representations of real life, without any other intimations such as smell or sound.(结果表明,马不仅能区分熟悉和不熟悉的人脸,它们还能很自然地理解照片是真实生活的二维表征,没有任何其他intimations,如气味或声音)”可知,马仅仅通过脸相,而不是气味、声音等“线索、依据”来识别。 故选A项。
根据最后一段倒数第二句“In future experiments, the researchers would like to test whether looking at photos of people that they have had bad experiences with in the past might cause horses to act anxious or even avoidance.(在未来的实验中,研究人员想测试一下,看过去有过不好经历的人的照片是否会导致马表现出焦虑甚至回避)”可推知,马是否能表达感情,研究者还不确定。故选C项。
根据第一段“We recognize our friends’ faces. And we’re not alone. Many social animals can identify individuals of their own species by features of their faces. That's important, because they need to be able to change their behavior depending on who they meet. And a recent research has shown that some species of monkeys, birds, and domesticated(家养的) animals can even tell different faces apart by looking at photographs alone.(我们识别得了朋友的脸。

通读全文,尤其第一段第二句“Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?(难道你没有注意到自从你开始学习一门语言以来你变得更聪明了吗?)”,以及第二段第一句“According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.(根据英国一所大学的一项新研究,学习第二语言可以提升你的脑力)”可知,本文介绍了一项研究发现:学习第二语言可以使人更聪明,提升脑力。故选D项。
根据第二段“According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).(根据英国一所大学的一项新研究,学习第二语言可以提高你的脑力。研究人员发现,学习其他语言会改变大脑灰质。这是大脑中处理信息的区域。这类似于锻炼能增强肌肉的方式。)”可知,作者提到锻炼,因为锻炼可以增强肌肉,通过类比,使读者相信:学习第二语言会改变大脑灰质,从而提高脑力。故选B项。
    14. 词句猜测题。根据第三段“Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language.(扫描显示,bilinguals大脑中的灰质密度比没有第二语言的人要大。)”
根据第三段“A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London(UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of ‘early bilinguals’ who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. ‘Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,’ said the scientists.(来自伦敦大学学院的Andrea Mechelli博士带领的一个研究小组对一组只会说英语的英国人进行了研究。他们与一组5岁前学会第二语言的‘早期双语者’,以及一些较晚学会第二语言的人进行了比较。扫描显示,双语者大脑中的灰质密度比没有第二语言的人要大。但是一个人在掌握一门新语言之前等待的时间越长,差异就越小。科学家们说:‘我们的研究结果表明,学习第二语言的经历会改变大脑的结构。’)”可知,学得越迟,灰质密度变化就越小,越早学习一门外语,灰质密度就越高。故选C项。

    36. when
故填when。
    37. pressure

故填was set。
    40. to be delivered
take+时间+to do是固定搭配,意为“做某事花多长时间”,且deliver和letters之间是逻辑被动关系,应用不定式的被动式to be delivered。故填to be delivered。
    41. that
故填that。
    42. to
故填to。
    43. marriage
    44. frozen
    45. wrapping

    Dear Peter,
I am glad that you are fascinated by Chinese food culture. Knowing that you are scheduled to visit Shandong Province during Chinese New Year, I am writing to welcome you and tell you some details about the reunion dinner in Spring Festival.
During Chinese New Year, Chinese people have the reunion dinner, which means family reunion. But the food customs vary. In northern China, dumplings are the typical food, representing good luck. People in the south, however, enjoy eating tangyuan, which means the reunion of the family. By the way, Roast Duck is what you must try. The duck is shaved into slice and wrapped in a paper-thin pancake. I bet it will be an unforgettable experience for you.
    Looking forward to meeting you!
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua

Hearing Janet’s words, I made up my mind to say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes. Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.
