When I found an advertisement for a conference by chance, I couldn’t wait to tell my coworkers. It looked like a great day of presentations highly relevant to our research, and I expected they would be eager to attend with me. However, no one was interested.
A year earlier, I left India for the United Kingdom to pursue my research career. At work, I shied away from engaging in discussions or putting forward my opinions. I was afraid my coworkers would realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a tough task.
Socializing didn’t help, as I constantly feared committing social mistakes. I longed for new experiences, but my insecurities prevented me. I started to keep more and more to myself. That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab prompted (促使) me to contact the university’s mental health services. The consultant suggested I attend a nearby concert by a famous singer from my home country. I couldn’t miss it. So, there I was in the packed concert hall, surrounded by strangers—all of us clapping and singing the choruses of the familiar songs. It was a beautiful night, and it proved to be a turning point.
My growing self-confidence carried over into my work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions. I offered to help coworkers design and trouble shoot experiments. I began to ask questions during departmental meetings. I finally felt like an active member of the group. So, when that conference came around, I felt comfortable registering to attend on my own-and I’m so glad I did. Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees. The encounters inspired me to critically evaluate my own professional interests.
    4. How did the author probably feel at first about his coworkers’ response?
    A. Eager. B. Worried. C. Disappointed. D. Uninterested.
    5. Why did the author contact the mental health services?
    A. He wanted to solve a conflict. B. He struggled to conduct research.
    C. He often made big mistakes in socializing. D. He lacked confidence in a new environment.
    6. What happened during the concert?
    A. The author got the consultant’s help. B. The author sang along with the strange audience.
    C. The author met with a previous coworker. D. The author connected a song with his research.
    7. What did the author do at last?
    A. He went to the conference alone. B. He turned to experts for advice.
    C. He took full charge of the lab. D. He changed his professional interests.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

Access to green spaces has been found to have many benefits for both physical and mental health and wellbeing. As is reported recently, nearby green areas have been shown to improve children’s respiratory(呼吸的)health and greatly improve the quality of life in large cities.
Researchers from the University of Illinois College conducted a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology to examine any potential(潜在的)links between greenness and academic achievement for schools with mostly low income students. Therefore, 318 public elementary schools in Chicago were included in the study.
“The goal was to see if the greenness-academic achievement relationship holds for poor, urban schools because that’s where it matters,” said Ming Kuo, the leader of the research. “That’s where educators and policymakers are desperately trying to find ways to help kids reach their potential.”
High-resolution aerial imagery technology was used to quantify(量化)tree and grass cover for each School. The researchers then compared greenness to the academic performance for the schools using standardized test scores for math and reading.
The researchers found that tree cover was a reliable predictor of academic performance, both for reading and math. The more trees there were, the better the standardized test scores were. Other things like the number of students in each classroom, gender ratios(性别比),and the number of bilingual(双语的)students had no influence on test scores or academic performance.
The results showed that having trees outside of a school affected academic performance and that schools considered the most disadvantaged had half the number of trees as the least disadvantaged schools. While the study does not prove any cause and effect between tree cover and academic performance, it does suggest that simply planting more trees in schoolyards across disadvantaged districts may improve academic performance.
“Early math skills are one of the best predictors of later success, not just in math, but in school,” said Kuo. “So what we have here is a very exciting clue that maybe simply greening—planting trees in schoolyards—could potentially have a significant effect on math achievement and school success down the line for these kids.”
    8. Why were the schools in Chicago chosen for the study?
    A. They were mostly located in remote areas.
    B. Their students had no access to green spaces.
    C. They had students with physical or mental problems.
    D. The majority of their students were from poor families.
    9. What affected the students’ reading scores most in the study?
    A. The area of green spaces. B. Their math skills.
    C. Their native language. D. The size of the class.
    10. Which of the following does Ming Kuo agree with?
    A. It’s urgent to reduce the number of students in a class.
    B. It’s unwise to connect greenness with academic success.
    C. Kids with better math scores enjoy greater success at school.
    D. Schools in Chicago should increase their green cover by half.
    11. What’s the main idea of the text?
    A. Many factors can affect students’ test scores.
    B. Trees help improve students’ school performance.
    C. More greenness at school benefits children’s health.
    D. It’s possible to predict students’ success in later life.
D 9. A 10. C 11. B

    D
It was decades ago, but it's still one of the most memorable conversations of my life. On a long, slow train rattling north, with nothing to do but watch the rain, the guy sitting opposite began trying to talk to me. Like most young women who have learned the hard way to be cautious of strangers, I reacted coldly. But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.
So that's what we did, for hours and hours, since he turned out to be very talkative. When the train eventually pulled in, we didn't swap numbers—it was a conversation strictly of its time—but I still think about it occasionally on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently like everyone else. Rarely can a person cheerfully break the social taboo(禁忌)about talking to strangers without any trace of ill intention but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it
And that's why I feel it ridiculous about a campaign launched this week to heal bitter national divides by encouraging Britons to talk to each other. Obviously, it takes more than a small talk over garden fences to unite a divided nation now. More people live alone than they did a generation ago, and we socialise increasingly through screens instead of bothering to call. In reality, social media platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division.
It is true that the "tube chat" campaign of a few years back failed in its attempt to make Londoners talk to each other on public transport. But even city residents who would normally die rather than make eye contact with strangers still happily join the large crowds of people by the Thames for the New Year's Eve fireworks. They would get a far better view at home on TV—it's not really about the fireworks, but being part of social engagement.
There's no guarantee that this latest attempt to reconnect will succeed, but I hope that my temporary train friend then is still talking, wherever he is now.
    12. What led the author to start the talk with the guy on the train?
    A. Her growing interest in communication.
    B. Her typical easygoing personality
    C. Her habit of chatting with strangers.
    D. The intention of the train journey.
    13. What has made talking to strangers a social taboo among the Britons?
    A. A lack of basic communicating skills.
    B. The absence of common topics.
    C. The concern for personal safety.
    D. The addiction to social media
    14. How does technology affect people's mutual connection?
    A. It is bringing people together in a larger sense.
    B. It is positively helping break the national boundaries.
    C. It has made people more divided than connected.
    D. It is the key driving force of removing divisions.
    15. What does the highly-attended firework show indicate?
    A. Tube chat campaign can never make it.
    B. TV programs at home are not appealing.
    C. The charm of the fireworks is hard to resist.
    D. People's desire to connect is still alive.
    【答案】12 A 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.(但当他说他只是觉得无聊,喜欢聊天时,我的好奇心占了上风。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段“Rarely can a person cheerfully break the social taboo(禁忌)about talking to strangers without any trace of ill intention but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it(很少有人能不带任何恶意地轻松地打破与陌生人交谈的社会禁忌,但如果我们中有更多的人知道如何做到这一点,生活会变得更有趣)”可以推断,很多人不能打破与陌生人交流的屏障是因为,害怕别人怀有恶意,威胁到个人安全。
根据第三段“In reality, social media platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division.(在现实中,旨在把人们聚集在一起的社交媒体平台在不知不觉中加剧了分歧。)”
根据第四段“They would get a far better view at home on TV—it's not really about the fireworks, but being part of social engagement.(在家里看电视,他们会看得更清楚——其实不是为了看烟花,而是社交活动的一部分。)”
Death is a part of life and it’s natural to grieve (悲伤) when an animal you love dies. Grieving is the emotional response to death. ____16____
A pet is part of the family, so when they die it can be very difficult and upsetting for everyone who love them. It’s OK to feel sad, angry, numb or to feel hard to believe they’re no longer alive. You may have lots of feelings but there’s no right way to feel or to grieve. As people are all different, the length of time it takes for you to feel less sad may not be the same as for someone else. ____17____ Dipti Solanki, who helps people with their grief, says, “Your feelings matter and are normal after you lose a pet. They can feel really big and overwhelming.”
____18____ Solanki says, “It’s really important that you talk about feeling sad, afraid or if you have any questions, because once you do you will start to feel calmer and less alone. ____19____” Talking about your pet helps to keep their memory alive as you remember the time you spent together. It also lets other people know that you want to talk about your pet.
Remembering the funny things your pet did and the happy times you shared can be of great help. ____20____. Print out photos of your pet and frame them or make them into a collage (拼贴画) to display. You can draw or paint a picture of them. Or write a story about something you did together or how they made you feel.

C 17. B 18. F 19. E 20. D

上文“As people are all different, the length of time it takes for you to feel less sad may not be the same as for someone else.(因为每个人都是不同的,你感到不那么悲伤的时间长度可能和别人不一样。)”
