My 7-year-old daughter Leeny always has her nose in a book. She even took to reading in the car on the long drive to summer camp, which was where she lost the book. This is the first lost library book in my life. My family has always been overeducated, but we were poor. I didn’t own books. I borrowed books. However, my daughters have more books now than I owned my whole childhood, and I knowingly contribute to it by adding to the stacks(堆).So it's probably my fault that when Leeny realized she had lost the book, she shrugged(耸肩). “Sorry. I can't find it,” she said. “It’s only $ 20, right? What’s the big deal?”
I felt the need to make her feel responsible for the book. She agreed to help me clean the chicken coop (笼子)in trade for my paying the library fine. I thought this idea was very clever because cleaning the coop is some work I had been avoiding for months. It was summertime and dust floated in the air. But my girl, my animal-loving mini-me, thought shoveling chicken poop(铲鸡粪)was the most fun she'd had on a Saturday morning in a long time. She didn't feel any of the emotions that punishment is supposed to introduce. In fact, she looked as if she might lose another on purpose in order to clean the coop again. I stood, somewhat dumbfounded, watching her.
It took me a while to realize what had happened, why my punishment had failed so completely and why I didn't care. The fact is that I had Leeny help me clean the chicken coop. I was there, too, shoveling chicken poop, fetching the clean straw and feed. Leeny's little sister, Vicki, was inside watching a cartoon while my husband paid bills. Only Leeny and I were outside. She had me all to herself for the first time since Vicki was born, and she was enjoying all the attention for once. I don't know what she learned about responsibility, but I found that I didn't care about the book any more. We bonded over that unpleasant job and spent quality time together: mother, daughter, and chicken poop.
4. How does Leeny find reading?
A. It is very challenging. B. It is better to be done in a library.
C. It is full of enjoyment. D. It costs a large fortune.
5. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refers to the fact that .
A. the author's daughters own too many books
B. the author's daughter often lost library book
C. the author could never have enough books to read
D. the author didn't own many books
6. How did the author feel after she saw Leeny's cleaning work?
A. Ashamed. B. Astonished. C. Embarrassed. D. Upset.
7. What's the best title for the passage?
A. What I owe to Leeny: more attention
B. My daughter drove me crazy, but I felt grateful
C. Surprise: my daughter loves cleaning chicken coops
D. My punishment failed, but I didn't care
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Public toilets around the globe have a reputation for being dark, dirty and dangerous. Tokyo recently unveiled new restrooms in two public parks that aim to address those concerns. For one thing, they are brightly lit and colorful. For another, they are transparent. This way, those who need to go can check out the cleanliness and safety of the toilets without having to walk inside or touch a thing.
Japan has long experimented with toilets, resulting in lids that open, and close automatically and seats that warm up. But the new toilets—designed by Shigeru Ban, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect—are made out of a “smart glass.”
The toilets were installed in Tokyo in September. Set up in front of a cluster of trees in the Shibuya District, the toilets stand out like a Mondrian painting.
When occupied and locked properly, the colored glass toilets become frosted (磨砂的) and opaque (not transparent). When the door is unlocked, an electric current rearranges the crystals in the glass to allow more light to pass through, creating a transparent effect. The toilets were presented as another futuristic and aesthetically (美学地) pleasing example of the country’s technological advancements.
The predecessor to Tokyo’s transparent toilets appeared in Switzerland in 2002, when designer Olivier Rambert unveiled two glass restrooms in the city of Lausanne. They had a safety feature that automatically opened the doors and turned the glass transparent if sensors detected no motion for 10 minutes. That could possibly help users who fall unconscious and need medical attention.
8. What’s the purpose of the design of new restrooms?
A. To make the parks tourist attractions.
B. To settle the problems with public toilets.
C. To maintain the standards of public toilets.
D. To achieve a breakthrough in toilet construction.
9. How does the “smart glass” function?
A. By cutting off electricity. B. By giving off colorful light.
C. By sensing the health of people. D. By changing the order of crystals.
10. What can we learn about the transparent toilets?
A. They cause the concerns about privacy.
B. They are decorated with artists’ paintings.
C. They are pioneered by Japanese architects.
D. They combine technological and artistic elements.
11. Which can best describe the safety feature of glass restrooms in Switzerland?
A. Conventional. B. Humanized.
C. Simplified. D. Recreational.
B 9. D 10. D 11. B

An economist, Adam Smith, famously wrote that “it is not from the benevolence (慈善) of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.” Like Smith, many economists today believe one’s self-interest is what drives competition and growth in market economies. Yet, in an increasingly interconnected society, it is even more crucial to have cooperative skills. Thus we should encourage cooperation to better prepare children for the future.
Firstly, cooperation is an especially prized soft skill in the present age. As a study proves, soft skills such as good communication and empathy (共情) indicate outstanding employees as compared to technical skills or knowledge. In contrast, extremely competitive and individualistic behavior may damage social relations in the community of co-workers. Even the most competent employee may fail to pursue his goals effectively without others’ help.
Moreover, encouraging cooperation boost children’s self-respect that better prepares them for the competitive world. Many modern societies are consumed by a crazy drive for success and the pressure to perform has infiltrated both classrooms and offices, causing higher rates of anxiety and depression among people. Teamwork can help an individual realize each has his or her own unique abilities and that another person’s strengths don’t discount his or her talents. Thus, cooperation can confirm children’s self-worth by correcting the insight that winning or paper achievement is the only measure of success.
However, critics may claim adapting to competition should be given priority in education and parenting. To achieve one’s ambitions, one has to actively fight for opportunities and distinguish oneself from others. Nevertheless, since passion can already stimulate children to fulfill their ambitions, the need to encourage competition may be at the end of the day. As much as external competition can drive people to pursue excellence, internal motivation is at least equally or even more essential, and cooperation plays an instrumental role in helping one uncover one’s motivations.
12. What can be inferred from Adam Smith’s words?
A. Our society is increasingly interconnected.
B. Our dinner is made out of the regards to markets.
C. Self-interest pushes the development of economies.
D. The butcher, the brewer or the baker is not sympathetic.
13. What does the underlined word “infiltrated ” mean in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Brightened. B. Decorated. C. Defended. D. Entered.
14. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. Paper achievement is the only measure of success.
B. One’s ambitions can be achieved through cooperation.
C. Competition is not necessary for people to pursue excellence.
D. Actively fighting for distinguishing oneself should be prioritized.
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce the advantages of cooperation.
B. To compare cooperation with competition.
C. To suggest enhancing competitive skills.
D. To advocate teaching children to cooperate.
C 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第一段的“Like Smith, many economists today believe one’s self-interest is what drives competition and growth in market economies.(和史密斯一样,今天的许多经济学家认为,在市场经济中,一个人的自身利益是推动竞争和增长的因素。)”可知,史密斯的那句话“it is not from the benevolence (慈善) of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.(我们不是从屠夫、酿酒师或面包师的仁慈中期待我们的晚餐,而是从他们对自身利益的考虑中。)”
根据第三段的“Many modern societies are consumed by a crazy drive for success and the pressure to perform(许多现代社会被对成功的疯狂追求所吞噬,表现的压力)”和“both classrooms and offices, causing higher rates of anxiety and depression among people(教室和办公室,导致人们更容易焦虑和抑郁)”可知划线词所在的句子表示“许多现代社会被对成功的疯狂追求所消耗,表现的压力已经渗透到教室和办公室,导致人们焦虑和抑郁的比例更高。”
根据第三段的“Moreover, encouraging cooperation boost children’s self-respect that better prepares them for the competitive world.(此外,鼓励合作可以提高孩子的自尊,更好地为他们面对竞争的世界做好准备。)”和最后一段的“Nevertheless, since passion can already stimulate children to fulfill their ambitions, the need to encourage competition may be at the end of the day. As much as external competition can drive people to pursue excellence, internal motivation is at least equally or even more essential, and cooperation plays an instrumental role in helping one uncover one’s motivations.(然而,由于热情已经可以刺激孩子实现他们的抱负,鼓励竞争的需要可能是在一天结束。

It seems like some people are born with a good sense of direction while others are always getting lost.____16____ You can improve your sense of direction. You just need to work at it.
Nowadays, of course, it’s convenient to rely on GPS rather than commit a long, complex route to memory.____17____ Studying a larger map and remembering the route before you set out does have its benefits. The amount of mental energy it requires means it’s more likely to stick in your mind. Looking at Google Maps on a big screen or even studying a paper map also allows you to get a sense of that all-important bigger picture and how everywhere fits together.
____18____ It’s also important to notice what’s around you in all directions. Instead of staring straight ahead, make sure you look up, down and behind you as well. This will come in particularly useful when you’re doing the journey in reverse (倒退)——even if it’s just finding your way back from the toilet in a restaurant. Another tip? Taking photographs or writing notes at key locations can help you keep them in your memory.
Finally, try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground. ____19____ But this sudden anxiety will only prevent you from calmly working out which way to go. Besides, getting lost is one of the best ways to discover new places and add more detail to that ever——growing mental map, both of which will help you have a better sense of direction in the long term.
Your sense of direction is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. If you only stick to the routes you already know, it’s never going to get any better. ____20____
A. Don’t just look where you’re going.
B. So now it’s the time to start exploring!
C. If you’re one of the “lost” ones, have no fear.
D. Anxiety plays a role in our sense of direction, too.
E. It’s all too easy to get anxious if you suspect you may be lost.
F. Developing a good sense of direction usually takes much practice.
G. But ignore it if you really want to improve your sense of direction.
C 17. G 18. A 19. E 20. B

上文“Nowadays, of course, it’s convenient to rely on GPS rather than commit a long, complex route to memory.”(当然,如今,依靠GPS,而不是将长而复杂的路线记牢,是很方便的。)及下文“Studying a larger map and remembering the route before you set out does have its benefits.”(研究更大的地图并在出发之前记住路线确实有其好处。)
下文“It’s also important to notice what’s around you in all directions. Instead of staring straight ahead, make sure you look up, down and behind you as well.”(注意你周围四面八方的东西也很重要。
上文“Finally, try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground.”(最后,当你在不熟悉的地方时,试着放松。)和下文“But this sudden anxiety will only prevent you from calmly working out which way to go.”(但这种突如其来的焦虑只会阻止你冷静地找出该走哪条路。)
上文“Your sense of direction is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. If you only stick to the routes you already know, it’s never going to get any better.”(你的方向感是一种要么使用它,要么失去它的技能。

故填of。
故填when。
故填To attract。
故填were sold。
故填a。

My July vacation began with a scream. "Lora!” I woke, my eyelids snapping open. I realized that my four-year-old sister, Jenny, was staring at me. I struggled to push her away from me as she jumped on my legs. She screamed and then ran out of my room.
It was as if Jenny never did anything wrong. If Jenny got angry, Mom would say she was trying to get her point across. When Jenny broke a plate, Dad said she was just "helping" me empty the dishwasher. When Jenny scattered flour all over the floor, instead of scolding her, my parents laughed and said, "She's turning into a baker just like you, Lora.”
We were flying to Utah to visit my grandma for the third July. Every year I prepared gifts for her birthday, but I sighed as I considered what to prepare this time. When we walked off the plane, I was relieved to see the smiling face of my grandma. We raced over to her.
“Hi, sweet heart.” Grandma went down on one knee to hug Jenny and then swung her in the air. Jenny screamed with laughter. Then Grandma hugged me. "It's also good to see you, Lora.”
After six hours of flight, I had a little headache. I wanted to be alone, so I went outside to take a walk and search for a birthday gift. Wandering on the street, I happened to see a bakery. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me, “Why not make a birthday cake by myself?” I was so excited that I immediately ran into the bakery told the baker my purpose and he permitted me to make a cake by myself
I tried my best to make a perfect cake for my grandma's birthday. When I just finished, Mom called me for dinner. I went back home in a hurry and hid my cake in the bedroom. When I walked back into the room after dinner, my heart stopped. Jenny was lying on the bed, with a lot of cream on her face. Seeing me frozen in the doorway, she jumped from the bed. She ran over to me and said, “The cream is so delicious?"
“Out!” I screamed angrily, and she ran out of the room. I ran over to the cake and the pattern on the cake was destroyed just as I'd feared.
Paragraph 1:
Mom appeared in the doorway with Jenny by her side,.

Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, I came up with an idea to solve the cake problem and improve my relationship with my sister .
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Mom appeared in the doorway with Jenny by her side. Jenny was crying, tears rolling down her cheeks. Mom’s gaze shifted to my cake, which I held with shaking hands. She gently pushed Jenny out of the room, shut the door and sat down next to me, “Lora”, she whispered, “I’m so sorry. I know you take a long time to prepare it. Jenny is naughty sometimes, but your yelling at her doesn’t solve anything. Jenny has realized her mistake and she wants to apologize to you. Can you forgive her and let’s think of a solution together?” I agreed with my mom and forgave my sister. But what should I do with my cake?
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, I came up with an idea to solve the cake problem and improve my relationship with my sister. I said to Jenny, “Do you want to repair the cake with me?” Jenny said yes in surprise. We shifted the pattern according to Jenny’s destruction. And then we went out to present the special birthday cake and the story behind it to our grandma. Grandma smiled with her eyes sparkling. “Do you know why I love it so much? This cake represents the bond you and Jenny share. This is the most beautiful and delicious cake I have ever had. I’m glad to see you can forgive Jenny and make the cake together.” At this moment, I realized that love and forgiveness mattered most in the family.
