I never thought that one day I would proudly show off my nose on a canvas on my living room wall. As a teenager, I couldn’t stand seeing a photo of my nose in profile. I hated how big it was and, if people praised me for my looks, I always felt it was in spite of the most noticeable feature on my face.
I was about to accept that I would never fully see my nose as beautiful when I met Nicholas Baldion, an artist, in a London pub, and asked him to paint my portrait. I regretted this the second I arrived for my sitting. I had forgotten that Baldion would have to spend hours staring at my biggest insecurity, and then painstakingly translating it onto canvas.
The first sitting was hard. I could not shake the feeling of wanting to turn my head to face the front. I hated the fact that Baldion was openly and carefully examining the one feature I had spent years trying to hide. Yet, as the two-and-a-half-hour sitting went on, I calmed down and began to accept my feelings. I had put myself in this situation, so now I just needed to sit in it. By the second sitting, I was almost excited-not just by the thought of having an afternoon when I had an excuse to do absolutely nothing, but because it had finally sunk in that I was having my portrait done.
Baldion told me what he was thinking when he looked at my nose. To an artist, beauty doesn’t necessarily reside in a living Barbie doll; it lives in wrinkles, sears, and character. “I always enjoy painting distinctive features,” he said. “Beauty is everywhere.”
I was nervous to see the finished portrait. What if it was further proof that my nose was unattractive? But when I looked at the picture of a gently smiling woman, confident in her own skin, I couldn’t help but smile back. She looked like me, yes, but she also looked quite attractive. Her nose was powerful, strong, and almost beautiful.
The process has shifted my perspective and I have learned to make up my own mind about what beauty means, whether it is a smiling, strong woman in an oil portrait, or a real-life reflection-complete with a big nose-looking back at me in the mirror.
    4. Why did the author regret having asked the artist to paint her portrait?
    A. Because she had to pay for the painting.
    B. Because she did not feel safe with the artist.
    C. Because she wasn’t confident about her big nose.
    D. Because she had to sit for hours for the painting.
    5. Which of the following is NOT what the artist thinks of beauty?
    A. Beauty exists in wrinkles.
    B. Beauty is everywhere.
    C. Beauty is features with characteristics.
    D. Beauty only lies in a living Barbie doll.
    6. What changed the author’s perspective on beauty?
    A. A portrait of an artist.
    B. Having learned art.
    C. The artist having painted her more beautiful.
    D. The experience of being painted by an artist.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. What Is Beauty
    B. My Portrait
    C. My Large Nose
    D. An Artist and Me

A new type of plastic made directly from organic plant waste has been created by scientists. The new material is easy to make and could be used in everything from packaging and textiles(纺织品) to medicine and electronics.
The researchers in Switzerland have already used the technique to make packaging films, fibres that can be used for clothes or other textiles and threads for 3D printing.
Conventional plastic is so widespread because making it combines low cost, heat stability, mechanical strength and processability, the researchers say. Until now, few, if any, alternative plastics have managed to match or surpass conventional plastic in these aspects, which is vital if they are to be used more widely.
To make the plastic, scientists “cooked” wood and other plant waste in inexpensive chemicals to make a plastic precursor(前身). The sugar structure stays complete within the molecular(分子) structure of the plastic, making the chemistry much cheaper than other types of alternative plastic.
Baek in 2016, the researchers found out that if they added an aldehyde(乙醛) chemical they could stabilize parts of the plant material to avoid their destruction during extraction. But now, they are using glyoxylic acid, a solid organic substance that occurs naturally and is used in industry. The team could simply fasten “sticky” groups onto both sides of the sugar molecules, which allowed them to act as plastic building blocks. Using this simple technique, they could turn up to a quarter of the weight of agricultural waste, or 95 percent of purified sugar into plastic.
“The plastic has very exciting properties, notably for applications like food packaging,” Professor Jeremy Lautenbacher from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, who created the plastic, said. “What makes the plastic unique is the presence of the complete sugar structure. This makes it incredibly easy to make because you don’t have to change what nature gives you, and it is simple to break down because it can go back to a molecule that is already plentiful in nature.”
    8. What can be learned about the conventional plastic and new type of plastic?
    A. The new type of plastic can be directly made from plant waste.
    B. Researchers use the same chemical in making the conventional plastic and new plastic.
    C. The sugar structure stays complete in the conventional plastic.
    D. The sugar structure is destroyed in the new type of plastic.
    9. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
    A. The conventional plastic. B. The new type of plastic.
    C. Packaging film. D. 3D printing.
    10. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
    A. The new type of plastic contains sugar structure.
    B. The new type of plastic is easy to make.
    C. The new type of plastic is simple to break down.
    D. The new type of plastic has splendid features.
    11. In which column of a magazine can we most probably find the text?
    A. History.
    B. Sports.
    C. Technology.
    D. Entertainment.

With one’s eyes closed, Beijing’s main roads sound like any Chinese city. All around is the noise of traffic, accompanied by honks(喇叭声) from delivery motorbikes, recorded safety warnings from buses and the occasional bell of a rental-bicycle. But in the capital’s last hutongs, pieces of an older soundscape can be heard.
The sound of caged crickets(蛐蛐) is one. Hung in the doorways of courtyard homes or small shops, the insects bring a rural note into the city. A quarter-century ago their song was common. Today, cricket-sellers still exist. A big cricket sells for 20 yuan. They are heirs(继承人) to a grand tradition.
Another is the music of steel plates, announcing a knife sharpener’s arrival. Several such specialists still work in Beijing’s streets. Their sounding-plates, together with a distinctive cry, call customers from hutong homes and high-rise flats. But numbers are falling.
An almost-gone Beijing sound is one of the strangest. It is made by homing pigeons, or more precisely by pigeon whistles. Even 20 years ago, it was possible to hear this sound in the hutongs. It was particularly associated with cold winter skies. Alas, modern Beijing is a city in a hurry. Many hutongs have been torn down to make way for wide roads and tall buildings, leaving no room for pigeon houses.
Zhang Baotong is one of Beijing’s last master pigeon-whistle makers. He learned to make whistles in boyhood. Today Mr. Zhang has a workshop lined with certificates calling him a living treasure. But many of his whistles are sold to collectors and never see the sky. Mr. Zhang is advising a museum of sound that will open soon in Songzhuang, a suburb of Beijing that is popular with artists. A rooftop pigeon house is planned, with more than 100 pigeons that will take to the skies for visitors. It is hoped that pigeon whistles will be heard each day over Songzhuang, at least in cooler months.
The co-founder of Fen Sonic HQ, a cultural institute that will run the museum, is Colin Siyuan Chinnery, a British-Chinese artist and collector of Beijing’s sounds. He lists the sounds and cries used by medicine sellers, doctors and knife sharpeners. Many of these will feature in an exhibit about old Beijing.
    12. Why the noise of Beijing’s main roads is mentioned in the first paragraph?
    A. To introduce the topic of the passage. B. To introduce the liveliness of Beijing.
    C. To show Beijing is a large city. D. To show Beijing’s traffic is crowded.
    13. Which fact is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The sound of crickets is still common today.
    B. The sound of steel plates is for snack selling.
    C. There’s no space for pigeon houses because of transformation.
    D. Colin Siyuan Chinnery is an American artist.
    14. What do we know about Zhang Baotong?
    A. He makes excellent pigeon whistles.
    B. He has recorded the sounds of many pigeons.
    C. He raises many pigeons.
    D. He is going to set up a museum of sound.
    15. What’s the main purpose of holding a sound exhibition?
    A. To help people learn to listen.
    B. To attract people’s attention.
    C. To promote artists’ works.
    D. To present the characteristics of old Beijing.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behavior and always regarded as a virtue. Every time people refer to the topic, I would recall an unforgettable experience which had a deep impact on my growth.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas, a town 18 miles away and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see a movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 pm. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.
I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I’m very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there’s nothing wrong with the car at all.”
    Paragraph 1
A wave of guilt swept over me.

They are certainly interesting creatures with many cute and sometimes strange habits that often have us wondering.”(猫的行为因猫而异。 以及下文“Why do cats like high places?”(为什么猫喜欢高处?)和“Why does my cat give ‘gifts’?”(为什么我的猫会送‘礼物’?)
    17. 上文“Why do cats like high places? Wild cats were hunters, and frequenting high places meant they had somewhere safe to view their territory, watch for danger, and attack prey.”(为什么猫喜欢高处? 下文“Our domesticated cats also enjoy watching the world from above, which provides them with a safe, calm place away from the activity in a house.”(我们家养的猫也喜欢从上面看世界,这为它们提供了一个远离室内活动的安全、平静的地方。)
该段下文“Both wild and domestic cats are drawn to hiding and sleeping in contained areas. At home, it is often the humble cardboard box. Cats are predators, and a box offers a perfect place to hide while waiting for prey and also to pounce from, as only one entrance exists.”(野猫和家猫都喜欢躲在封闭的地方睡觉。 故选A项。
    19. 根据下文“Showing off their catch to you means you are a part of their family and they want to show you their hunting skills.”(向你炫耀它们的猎物意味着你是它们家庭的一员,它们想向你展示它们的狩猎技能。)
    20. 根据上文“Cats are well known for leaving us gifts that we may not want, such as lizards or mice.”(众所周知,猫会给我们留下我们可能不想要的礼物,比如蜥蜴或老鼠。)和“Showing off their catch to you means you are a part of their family and they want to show you their hunting skills.”(向你炫耀它们的猎物意味着你是它们家庭的一员,它们想向你展示它们的狩猎技能。) 以及下文“Be sure to offer your cat a variety of toys to help them satisfy these natural hunting instincts.”(一定要给你的猫提供各种各样的玩具,帮助它们满足这些自然的狩猎本能。)

A. wandered闲逛;B. waited等待;C. stood站;D. sat坐着。

A. different不同的;B. ridiculous荒谬的;C. the same一样的;D. normal正常的。根据句意以及该句中的“And every year”故可推知,从那以后,每年都是这样,一样进行女儿当家日,呼应上文“We call it her ‘in-charge day’, a day when our nine-year-old daughter Flora is in charge”讲第三年继续这个家庭活动。故选C项。
A. parenting教育;B. refreshing使恢复精力;C. assisting帮助;D. entertaining娱乐。根据下文“That first year, she brushed our teeth, read us stories and put us to bed at 7:30.” 故选A项。
A. convinced使确信;B. informed通知;C. taught教;D. released释放。根据下文“I learned something I had somehow managed to forget …”

故填served/had served。
故填traveling/travelling。
故填could。
故填with。
故填to follow。
分析句子可知,此处为连词which/that引导的限制性定语从句,先行词this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities在从句中作主语成分。故填which/that。
故填a。
故填or。

    Dear Ben,
How are you doing? Owing to the occasional outbreak of the Covid-19, we sometimes have to have lessons on line at home. Actually it is not that bad. Online courses break through the limitation of time and space, providing us with great convenience to study and saving us and our parents a lot of time. But it also has some disadvantages, one of which is that it requires students’ self-discipline and lacks interaction between teacher and students.
All in all, every coin has two sides. As far as I am concerned, if you can make full use of every possible means appropriately to study, it won’t matter whether you study online or in the classroom.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
Owe to→due to
    提供:providing→offering
    缺点:disadvantages→shortcomings
All in all→In a word
Online courses break through the limitation of time and space, providing us with great convenience to study and saving us and our parents a lot of time.
Online courses break through the limitation of time and space so that they can provide us with great convenience to study and save us and our parents a lot of time.
1:But it also has some disadvantages, one of which is that it requires students’ self-discipline and lacks interaction between teacher and students.(运用了介词+which引导的非限制性定语从句)
2:As far as I am concerned, if you can make full use of every possible means appropriately to study, it won’t matter whether you study online or in the classroom.(运用了if引导的条件状语从句。)
    Paragraph 1:
A wave of guilt swept over me. I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him, “I'm angry, not with you but with myself.” You see. I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father.
    Paragraph 2:
“I’m going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years”, father said to me. “But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it's dark. You can't walk back.” I begged. My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson.
I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late.这句话运用了why引导的定语从句;文章也使用了一些固定词组,如pass through;brought up;let … down等。
