第一部分、阅读理解
Celebrate Father's Day with these four movies
Father's Day, a day for people to express gratitude to their fathers, is celebrated on June 19 this year. Many movies show and honor a father's love, so why not choose one to watch with your dad or child. Here we have selected a few classic films themed on fathers. Take a look!
Dangal
Dangal is an Indian movie centered on female wrestling champions. The father in the movie was once a national wrestling champion of India. He discovers his daughters' wrestling talent unexpectedly and decides to train them, for which they have to break the convention and make much effort. At last, the girls win the competitions and create more possibilities for their lives, as well as become role models inspiring numerous women.
Looking Up
Looking Up tells a story about the influence of a father's education. Ma Haowen, the father, always tries to educate his child in his unique way; creating a relatively relaxing environment for his son. The only one requirement he has for his son is to never stop thinking. He hopes that his child can think independently and follow his heart to face the world bravely. With the encouragement and love of the father, his son achieves his dream of becoming an astronaut.
I am Sam
I am Sam tells a story about an unusual father and his daughter. Sam is a disabled person with mental disability. Although his intelligence is just as the same as a seven-year-old child, he loves his daughter with all his heart. When his daughter is taken away from him, he does his best to fight for custody(监护).
The Father
The Father tells the story of an elderly father suffering from an illness. Anthony has loved his daughter Anne for his whole life. As he is a highly independent man, he refuses all the help from his daughter, even as he gets old and ill. However, the Alzheimer's disease starts to take away Anthony's memories and independence. He forgets everything but he can recognize his daughter Anne.

When faced with the decision to get out of bed or have a few more minutes of sleep, which do you choose? Believe it or not, that decision could make a world of difference in the rest of your day.
About 85 percent of Americans use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings, according to sleep researcher Till Roen. And while there are no official numbers on snoozing(打盹), a quick survey of social media makes it clear that hitting the snooze button is a popular pastime(消遣).
As to how the snooze button will affect your day, scientists have mixed opinions. Some scientists think people who hit the snooze button in the mornings are actually clever, creative and happy while some said that hitting the snooze button will ruin your life, or at the very least your day. “I feel that hitting the snooze button has got to be one of the worst things that ever happened to human sleep,” researcher Jonathan Horowitz said. “The chances of you ‘snoozing’ and actually experiencing a meaningful rest are close to zero.”
According to some sleep experts, when hitting the snooze button, you are in fact confusing your body and mind, and throwing yourself into a deep state of being sleepy. The body needs some time to wake up. Therefore, when returning to what will be a light sleep for a brief period of time, you are putting your body back into a sleep mode before waking it again. At that point your body won't know what it wants, resulting in a sort of half awaken state.
If you really want to take advantage of an alarm clock, the key is to form a healthy sleep cycle. Focus your efforts on getting enough sleep each night and waking up at the same time each day so that when your alarm goes off you feel rested.
4. What can we infer about hitting the snooze button from Paragraph 2?
A. People do it just for fun. B. It is a common practice.

A. To introduce ways to keep refreshed in the morning.
B. To explain the relationship between the snooze button and people's character.
C. To discuss whether people should hit the snooze button.
D. To illustrate how to avoid the light sleep mode.
Anne Lacaton and Jean-Phippe Vassal, this year's Pritzker Prize winners, were as surprised as anyone else when the most famous award in architecture was made public yesterday.
“Of course it's very pleasant, and we are very pleased,” Lacaton said at a conference with her partner, both smiling broadly from their black eyeglasses.
Putting aside their eyeglasses, Lacaton and Vassal could not be more different from an earlier generation of Pritzker winners, known for their easily recognizable styles and grand work. Instead, the two apply their simple guideline to their work on old urban buildings for low-income families: Never destroy, never remove or replace, always add, transform, and reuse!
When Lacaton and Vassal were asked to redesign a particularly large and over-crowded public housing block in Bordeaux in 2017, the residents(居民) told them they could not afford to move, even temporarily, but they wanted bigger units. Their solution was to replace the folding wooden front door with sliding glass door to each unit and painted the ugly walls with something bright. Suddenly, everyone had roomy outdoor space, some of which could be used during the winter as “winter gardens.”
“So, people can not only get sun and light and spend time with family, but it's also open to neighbors,” Columbia University architecture professor Mabel Wilson. “I would love to live in one of the apartments t they've redesigned.”
Their approach of cheap and creative re-adaption could be a model for urban planning in the US, Wilson adds, where destruction has been seen as a solution to old public housing in such cities as Chicago and St. Louis.
There's a lot of violence in architecture and urbanism. We try to be precise. “We try to work with kindness,” Lacaton once explained. “Buildings are beautiful when people feel well in them, when the light inside is beautiful and the air is pleasant, when the exchange with the outside seems easy and gentle, and when uses and sensations are unexpected.”
Lacaton and Vassal started their firm in Paris in 1987. Together, they worked primarily in France.
8. Why are Lacaton's and Vassal's eyeglasses mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To draw readers attention to their unusual color.
B. To show that Pritzker Prize winners need eyeglasses.
C. To tell us how surprised and happy they are for the prize.
D. To stress their only possible similarity with other Pritzker winners.
9. What did Lacaton and Vassal do in the Bordeaux public housing project?
A. They built winter gardens in the outdoor space.
B. They destroyed the walls to provide more space.
C. They just changed the doors and repainted the walls.
D. They provided bigger temporary rooms for the residents.
10. What have Lacaton and Vassal most probably done to win the Pritzker Prize?
A. They have built many public houses with unique styles.
B. They have designed various famous buildings in the world.
C. They have provided free services for poor families in the US.
D. They have tried to transform old urban buildings with kindness.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Architecture. B. Environment. C. Lifestyle. D. Politics.
Although the weather is very hot now, the carnival of ice and snow is getting closer. The preparation work for Beijing Winter Olympic Games, which are expected to begin on Feb 4, 2022, has entered its final stage. In January, 2021, the ice-making work on the Ice Ribbon, a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.
In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small-time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make a big difference. “It's not just a hunk of ice like you'd normally think of, like ice cubes sitting in your freezer,” told Kenneth Golden, a US mathematician who studies the structures of ice. “It's a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think.”
The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved solids like salts and minerals. Such impurities don't fit in the regular hexagonal(六边形的) structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water is, the more consistent the ice surface.
In addition to the need for excellence in the raw materials of ice-making, technology is also very important. As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues, a carbon dioxide(CO2) cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. CO2 is not new when it comes to ice-making. However, it has been gradually replaced by the man-made refrigerant(制冷剂) like Freon.
With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. As an element of the atmosphere, CO2 doesn't damage the ozone layer. Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas, its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other man-made refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly.
“We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way,” told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
12. What is the result of impurities in water for ice-making?
A. The water isn't able to freeze completely.
B. The quality of the ice will be affected.
C. The ice surface will be more consistent.
D. It's likely for athletes to fall on the ice.
13. Why has CO2 cooling technology been applied for the Winter Olympic Games?
A. It's the most advanced technologies for ice-making.
B. CO2 is more efficient than other refrigerants.
C. CO2 is more environmentally-friendly than Freon.
D. CO2 has already existed in the atmosphere.
14. What is Gao's attitude to CO2 being applied to ice-making?
A. Unclear. B. Opposed. C. Doubtful. D. Favourable.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Beijing Winter Olympic Games Is Coming.
B. Beneath Olympic Ice.
C. The Use of Refrigerants in Olympic Games.
D. The Structure of Ice.

Dear officer,
I am writing to extend my sincere gratitude to you. Since the middle of August, there are frequent mountain fires in Chongqing, causing great damage. However, the rescue work is not easy due to the uncertainty of the wind.
Fortunately, you came to our rescue immediately. Professional rescue teams, armed police, fire fighting and other rescue forces spared no efforts to put out the fire. It especially touched me when the volunteers joined in the rescue work regardless of the hot weather and burning ground. It occurred to me that but for your help, Chongqing could not have returned to normal so soon.
Your commitment really means a lot to us, and I really hope to have the opportunity to repay your unselfish devotion.
