BIt was so dark. It was like being locked in a closet. It was almost cold enough to damage important plane parts. The flight on a small, overloaded bush plane包机to the South Pole was nine hours each way. So to the outside world, the Antarctic rescue flight of two sick Americans from a remote South Pole station sounded dangerous. In an Associated Press interview on Tuesday, chief pilot Wallace Dobchuk and first officer Sebastien Trudel said they weren't comfortable being called heroes and were just doing their jobs. "This wasn't as risky as it may seem because of proper training, planning and experience, as well as some good luck," said Kelly Falkner, head of a polar program office. "The weather in Antarctica is fickle, but for the mission it had to be just perfect. And it was ideal at just the right time, changing to bad hours after the rescue," Falkner said. The U.S. National Science Foundation runs a station at the South Pole. But one person, and then a second, got sick. After much discussion, Twin bush planes were hired for the rescue. The two planes arrived at a British base 1,500 miles away, rested and one flew to the South Pole and flew back with the two patients. The other took their two patients on to Chile, where they were treated before being sent home. With 11 hours' worth of fuel put in the plane, it's no bigger than a delivery truck, along with survival and medical equipment. It got crowded and heavy. Dobchuk said that made it harder to take off and land. But they managed. 24. An Adventure in AntarcticCAir pollution levels vary greatly between different places in Gothenburg. This is the finding of a new study led by researchers at the University of Gothenburg, which concludes that trees contribute to cleaner air in cities. It is well known that green spaces can improve the quality of life and create a better climate in our cities, but how important is vegetation植被for producing cleaner air for cities? This question is the focus of a group project led by researchers at the University of Gothenburg. In the project's first study, the researchers measured pollutants in the air and compared them with pollutants on the leaves of broadleaf trees. The study looked at the oak橡树, and sampling was made in June and September. The study was conducted in seven urban settings in Gothenburg. The researchers chose to focus on PAHs, a group of air pollutants not yet studied closely but some of which are believed to be very harmful to human health. The results were clear: the pollutants in the leaves increased over time and the researchers could show a clear connection between the level of air pollutants and the concentration of pollutants in the leaves. "The study establishes that the leaves collect the air pollutants during the summer, thus reducing human exposure to harmful substances in the air. The study confirms that trees play a role in improving air quality in cities," says Hakan Pleijel, professor of environmental science at the University of Gothenburg. At the same time, the researchers discovered that pollution levels varied greatly between different measurement sites. At the most polluted site —Nils Ericsson Terminal, the main bus station —the levels of PAHs were seven times higher than at Angered City Park on the edge of the city. The researchers hope that the study can be an important piece of the puzzle when planning urban landscapes. 28. What is the finding of the study in Gothenburg? A. Air pollution does exist in a variety of cities. B. Trees are important for cleaner air in cities. C. Cleaner air is available in some urban places. D. Different places have various kinds of trees. 29. What did the researchers concentrate on to contribute to their finding? A. They identified certain levels of PAHs.       B. They compared some broadleaf trees. C. They used samples of the oak trees.          D. They measured air pollutants everywhere. 30. What do we know about the result of the study according to Hakan Pleijel? A. Pollutants in trees increase over time.        B. Trees are vital to improve human health. C. The trees' leaves absorb the pollutants.       D. Leaves stop humans taking in polluted air. 31. What does this text want to convey? A. The level of air pollutants depends largely on leaves. B. Producing cleaner air results from new studies. C. Green spaces can improve the quality of human life. D. Vegetation needs to be included in city planning. DAttitude actually is mental energy and from the moment you awake in the morning until you fall asleep at night, you are continuously producing this mental energy, or attitude. There is never a time when you can have a neutral(中立的)attitude. Your attitude right now is either positive or negative. Your attitude determines your altitude. For example, as a plane is in the air, it has an altitude indicator. The indicator tells the pilot in which direction the plane is going, up or down. Just like the plane, you too have an altitude indicator and you're the pilot of your plane. The feeling that you gain when something is wrong or what you are doing is not right serves as your altitude indicator. We all have an attitude to our thinking which determines our destiny. In fact, attitude is a matter of choice. It determines the size of our dreams and influences our determination when we face new challenges and the thing is, no one can control your attitude but you. No one can make us angry. We make ourselves angry when we give in to that control of our attitude and when people do things to anger us. All it does is put our attitude to the tests. We have that choice every morning of what kind of attitude we are going to have for the rest of the day. Attitude is everything. To begin with every problem is an adventure. To fall, rise and try again is what we call adventure and that's the real fun of life. Failure is not a bad thing but another chance for success. Dreaming of becoming successful is not enough. There' Il be a lot of things you hate doing, but you have to do them all and that's a success. With a positive attitude, you'll have the ability to be happier every day, make others around you happier, and live a good life. 32. What does the author want to stress with the example in Paragraph 2? A. Attitude's role in people's future development. B. The importance of pilots ' feelings in flight. C. People's correct judgement of their life direction. D. The application of altitude indicators in various fields. 33. What are people doing when they try to anger us according to the author? A. They're trying to control our feeling.       B. They're testing our attitude. C. They' re challenging our bottom line.       D. They' re reminding us of possible failure. 34. What does the author think of the adventure in life? A. Dangerous and tiring.          B. Annoying and understandable. C. Difficult but meaningful.        D. Exciting and necessary. 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. How to achieve a positive attitude?       B. How is attitude formed? C. What is attitude?                      D. What's the power of a positive attitude? 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Cyberart is the art produced with the help of computers. It's a term for forms of art that use non-traditional media. Computer software used in creating cyberart can play different kinds of roles. Some computer programs are used to touch up images that are brought in from outside sources.   36   .Hardware is also commonly used for cyberarl. Much of cyberart includes at least some traditional elements or techniques in it.   38   For centuries art has been shown in public spaces, often with a high cost and difficulty in attending.   39   . If the Internet can provide a way of showing artwork, it can be appreciated by more people around the world.    40   . Others say that images copied from the Internet can be beautified and then uploaded again without a record of the file's history. A. So cyberart can be considered tradigital too. B. This further limits the possible artwork audiences. C. Art that uses the Internet has always been argued about. D. Cyberart couldn't exist without computers. E. This short, beautiful sentence tells us an incontrovertible truth: if you have a dream and stick to it, you will realize it sooner or later. For me, the saying has a special meaning. When I was in Junior Middle School, I was so confused in my studies that I nearly lost direction. But my head-teacher was always there and gave me guidance and confidence every time I was depressed. From then on, I held a strong will to pursue better achievements. Eventually, all my efforts paid off and I became acknowledged and admired by more and more people. “Nothing is impossible to a willing heart”, as long as you have a dream, keep trying and you will surely make it, too.
