    Lesson 38The World Is a Big Place

    PartAnalysis of Teaching Material 

    The topic of Unit 7 is Know Our World. This unit helps the students to know about our home---the earth, especially contrast and comparison. Lesson 38 is the second lesson of Unit 7. It is a reading text. The lesson is focused on some geographical features. It’s helpful to improve the students’ reading skills. At the same time, it cultivates the right and positive attitudes toward the earth.

    Part II Analysis of the Students

    The students in Grade Eight have certain language basis. They have interests and strong desire to learn the new knowledge, and they are willing to co-operate and communicate with others in class. According to these characteristics, I designed the open questions, student-centered tasks and activities in this lesson.

    Part III Teaching aims

    1. Knowledge aim

    Be able to understand some new words and phrases:

    increase, billion, surface, total, one third, be covered with, be called

    2. Ability aim

    Be able to talk about how to treat the earth well.

    3. Emotion aim

    To have right and positive attitudes towards our earth

    Part Teaching focus

    The important point is to master the key words / structures (increase, billion, surface, total) and learn how to use the pattern drill be doneand the passive voice. And the other one is how to guide the students to express their ideas effectively and deliver positive energy by in-class activities.

    Part Analysis of Teaching and Learning Approaches

    According to the characters of the students and the teaching material, situation teaching methods, communicative teaching method, task-based teaching method, encouragement and praise will be applied in my lesson. As we know, students are the real master of the class, so student-centered activities will be presented in my each teaching step such as individual work, group or discussion work.

    Part Teaching procedure:

    Guessing:

    Guess which continent it is.

    (根据描述猜是哪个大洲)

    It is the biggest continent. It has the highest point on the earth in the Himalayas.      (Asia).

    It is the second largest continent. Many elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions live there.    (Africa).

    It is the third largest continent. Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are the three major countries on this continent.    (North America).

    It is the fourth largest continent. There are 13 countries on this continent.

    (South America)                 

    It is the fifth largest continent. The South Pole is on this continent. (Antarctica)

    It is the sixth largest continent. It is a good place for people to travel to. (Europe)

    It is the smallest continent. You can find koalas and kangaroos there.(Australia)

    设计意图:在语境中运用,巩固新词汇。

    Lead in:

    Show a picture and ask Ss some questions

    How many continents are there in the world? What are they?

    How many oceans are there in the world? What are they?

    The seven continents and four oceans make up the world. So the world is a big place.

    设计意图:图片导入,迅速抓住学生的注意力,问题的设置让学生在不知不觉中进入到新课的状态,引入本课主题The world is a big place. 同时为接下来的环节做好了铺垫。同时,通过描述图片和猜测爱好,培养学生的观察能力和思维品质。

    Fast-reading:

    Read the lesson and match each paragraph with its main idea.(连线每段大意)

    设计意图:通过Skimming快速阅读,找出段落大意,让学生整体感知文章,获得全文大意。

    Care-reading1

    设计意图:让学生运用scanning的阅读技巧,完成任务型阅读,加深了对本节课内容的细节理解,培养了学生的思维的能力

    Opening up you mind (发散思维)

    Why must the earth be treated well?

    (Because the earth is our home now, and it will be our home in the future.)

    How can we protect the earth?

    (1.protact the environment  2.plant more trees  3.love animals…..)

    设计意图:阅读活动完成之后,通过发散式的问题,让学生深思让学生理解了文章内容,又提升了学生阅读理解能力。同时,为后面的写作打下基础。

    Language points

    1. 分数构成

    英语中分数的表达法:基数词+序数词

    其中基数词表示分子,序数词表示分母。

    如果分子大于一,分母要用复数形式。

    1. 被动语态 be done

    设计意图:写作前,教师给于写作支架和指导,更有利于学生学习语法点。学生展示和师生互动,让学生不断提高水平。
