Passage 2
When I was young, I watched my mother using our dial (拨号) telephone one day. She was talking to someone who wasn’t actually in the room. After she hung up the phone and left the room, I walked over to the phone. I dialed some numbers like my mother and then I received a voice saying, “You have dialed a wrong number. Please …” I was surprised and quickly hung up.
That, of course, was a long time ago. It was my earliest memory about the telephone. A few years later, we changed the old dial telephone to a push button (按键) phone. Next came mobile phones that you could carry around the house with you. After that came cellphones, and smartphones.
Nowadays there are hundreds of apps on my smartphone. I can send an email in seconds with my phone. It seems that we are more connected in this world than ever before.
But it brings another problem. As much as we are connected to each other by phone, we rarely (很少) really connect with each other. Few people write letters to each other these days. Few take the time to talk face to face. Instead of talking on the phone, we send messages. Instead of looking into our loved ones’ eyes, we stare at our phones.
Don’t let that happen. Don’t let technology take your time and your life away from you.
Take a walk on the beach with your friend. Sit and watch a movie with your loved one. When technology can help you do these things, then use it; but when it can’t, turn it off.
25.The writer was surprised when _________.
A.she saw her mother using the phone
B.her mother hung up the dial telephone
C.she dialed the numbers like her mother
D.she heard someone speaking in the phone
26.What is the right order for the development of the phone?
a. push button phone b. smartphone c. dial telephone d. mobile phone e. cellphone
A.acdbe B.cadeb C.cdaeb D.adcbe
27.What do people often do nowadays according to the passage?
A.People often write letters to each other.
B.People often meet and talk face to face.
C.People often look at and use their phones.
D.People often stare into loved ones’ eyes.
28.What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
A.It’s time to turn off our telephone.
B.It’s easy to communicate online today.
C.Telephone changes our life in many ways.
D.We should connect with our heart, not technology.
Passage 3
Are you afraid of going to the dentist? If so, you’re not alone.
These fears could just be in our heads, however. According to a recent survey by Martin Tickle, a professor at Manchester University in the UK, the pain isn’t felt most of the time in dental surgeries (牙科手术). In fact, among the 451 interviewed patients, 75% reported no pain at all during their visits, including situations when they had their teeth pulled out.
Could it be the sound of the drill (钻头) then?
“I found that the sound of drilling can evoke deep worry in dental patients. Actually they don’t have any pain.” Hiroyuki Karibe, a scientist at Nippon Dental University in Tokyo, told the Guardian.
To find the reason why a drill might bring on a racing heart, Karibe divided the volunteers into low-fear and high-fear groups based on how much they feared a trip to the dentist. Volunteers were played the sound of a drill while their brain activities were watched by a machine.
What Karibe found in the low-fear group was increased activity in the areas of the brain relative to auditory processing (听觉处理), which means, for these people, the sound of dental drills is no different from other sounds.
In the high-fear group, however, the brain area that was activated (激活) was different. It was the area that carries out a number of duties, including learning, feelings and, most importantly, memory. This means that these volunteers not only heard the sound, but they remembered it — they made connections between the sound of a drill and the worry it produced in the past, causing their worry to return.
Understanding how brains reply to the sounds of dentists’ drills could help scientists find ways to make patients more relaxed, according to Karibe, because patients who worry about going to the dentist might keep putting off their visits. But the best way is to keep your teeth healthy.
29.How does the writer explain that the pain isn’t felt most of the time in dental surgeries?
A.By showing facts with numbers.
B.By giving examples group by group.
C.By comparing results of patients.
30.According to the fourth paragraph, what does the word “evoke” mean in Chinese?
A.减轻 B.引起 C.阻止
31.How did the sound of drilling produce different results to the volunteers in the study?
A.It produced some worry in the volunteers in the low-fear group
B.For the high-fear group, it caused more activities in the brain area relative to auditory processing.
C.It made people in the high-fear group remember their past uncomfortable memories.
32.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Some new ways to treat teeth.
B.The proper way to treat dental patients.
C.How the study might be useful.
33.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce us a recent survey by a scientist.
B.To help us have less fear of a trip to the dentist.
C.To make it clear that the sound of drilling is not terrible.

Passage 5
阅读下面短文,根报短文内容,回答下列问题。
Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still quite common among teenagers.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious(显而易见的) reason is lack(缺少) of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily meal for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all lead to teens having less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family cost, or simply for clothes.
Physical problems are another reason that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲惫不堪) during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical research also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.
The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to show your respect to teachers. In addition, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.
Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common situation. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.

How to face the difficulty
Everyone is bound to face difficulties. I used to have some trouble making friends with others.
I was so quiet and found communicating with others really difficult. As a result, I often felt lonely. But things have changed since my head teacher Ms.Zhang had a long talk with me. She encuraged me to be open and offer my hand to others. I tried and it really worked. Now I have made a few friends and become more confident.
I find making friends isn’t that difficult now. I will not be a closed book any more.
