The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
注意:
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too.

With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

No One Will Ever Know
Karen, Judy and I were the last ones back in the classroom after lunch. All of the other sixth graders were already outside, since it was a pleasant spring day.
“Look at what I found this morning in the storage cupboard when I was getting out some art supplies for Mrs. Eiffler.” said Karen, holding up a wooden box filled with short pieces of chalk in every color of the rainbow.
"Wow! What fun it would be to write on the chalkboard while everyone is outside.” Judy said. “But M “s. Eiffler doesn't allow us to write on the chalkboard.” I responded, already feeling guilty. “Don't be afraid, Janet. No one will ever know,” said Karen.
I unwillingly joined my friends in the artwork, but was afraid of being caught. I knew well that we were breaking not one, but two class rules. The second rule-was that no one was allowed to stay inside at noon without a written excuse from home if the weather was nice.
Trying various colors, we drew houses, trees and three-dimensional boxes. It was fun! Then Judy had an idea. "We're all right-handed. Let's see who can write our names best using our left hands. Judy and Karen picked up their chalk and started writing. I chose a white piece from the box and wrote my name. “I think Judy is the winner,” said Karen. “Hers is the best.”
“We’d better get this board cleaned off before Mrs. Eiffler comes back,” said Judy, erasing our artwork from the board. Everything came off but my name!
In disbelief; I looked carefully at the chalk I held in my sweaty hand. It wasn't chalk at all, but a small piece of white color crayon. My mother had a saying: " Fools, names and faces always appear in. public places.” I never understood fully what it meant before. Now I did! My knees felt weak. What would Mrs. Eiffler do to me? And the teacher would be returning soon.

Paragraph 1
“Quick, let’s get some wet paper towels,” said Judy.

Paragraph 2
We were just slipping into our desks when the bell rang.

Paragraph 1:
“Quick, let’s get some wet paper towels," said Judy. Everyone sprang into action. After rubbing pretty hard, my name still remained. “I think I saw a can of cleaner by the sink in the coat room,” I said as I raced to find it. We rubbed with the cleaner and my name came off all right, but in the process of removing it, we left a friction mark on the chalkboard. Listening for footsteps coming down the hall, we dried the wet area as much as we could with more paper towels and fanned it with a book to remove every tell-tale trace of wetness.
Paragraph 2:
We were just slipping into our desks when the bell rang. The other students began entering the classroom. The teacher walked in soon afterwards. Mrs. Eiffler never asked about the friction mark. Maybe she never noticed it, but I did. Every time I walked past the damaged surface of the chalkboard, I remembered it. Oh, how I remembered it so well. The lesson I learned that day is one I never forgot, even though 40 years have passed since the event. "No one will ever know” is never true. Even if no one else found out, I myself knew. Sometimes living with a guilty conscience is punishment enough.
采取行动:spring into action/ jump into action
进入:enter/ get into

[高分句型1] Every time I walked past the damaged surface of the chalkboard, I remembered it.
[高分句型2] The lesson I learned that day is one I never forgot, even though 40 years have passed since the event.
A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

Paragraph 1:
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. ______________
Paragraph 2:
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. ______________
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.
首先,根据文章当中第二段内容比较开心的基调,第一段的故事情节应该比较偏向正面感情色彩,例如:我们在露营过程中一起搭建帐篷的开心时光或露营过程中的趣事(尤其是前文有铺垫妈妈是个forgetful的人,这一点也可以埋下伏笔来表达后面过程中由于妈妈健忘而带来的趣事)(也有同学在此处描述了露营过程中对其他陌生人提供帮助,来集中体现nice这一个点);
其次,第二段开头说来描述欣赏风景: 此处可以用一些描述景色环境的表达来烘托下氛围,但是第二段不能仅仅只能有景色描述;例如:这里可以实写和虚写结合的方式,看到景色(同时回忆往事),最终把故事的落脚点放在“家人的感情”“亲情”“生活的乐趣”“与妈妈一起的趣事”等等角度都可以的;当然也有同学描述与陌生人的相遇,引出了陌生人的善意这个主题;总之这次的话题比较开放,情节可以写的角度比较多;
Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. what引导的主语从句和which引导的非限制性定语从句But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom.
Father’s Day Chess
It was Dale's third Sunday volunteering at the retirement home. He had thought it would be a good way to give back. But today he just felt tired. While on a short break, Dale took a walk through the garden. There were people sitting on benches, chatting together. A woman sat knitting, looking very pleased with herself. The strands of brightly-colored yarn disappeared quickly through her hands.
Across the courtyard, there was a man sitting alone at a table with a chessboard in front of him. Dale watched with curiosity as the man would stare at the pieces, then move them, and then would do the same from the other side of the board. On his way home after the day had ended, Dale found himself thinking about the man. How he was hunched over in deep thought, playing a game against himself. How odd, he thought.
Each Sunday, Dale would see the man doing the same thing. While everyone else talked with one another or happily carried on, the man would sit, slightly bent over and scratching his chin. His eyes rarely came off of the chessboard. One Sunday, Dale went to the garden on his break expecting to see the man at his normal spot. But he wasn't there. It was Father's Day and there were many visitors at the home. Dale shrugged and thought the man must be busy with his family.
That afternoon, Dale was mopping the hallways when he happened to pass by the man's room. The door was slightly open and he could see the man sitting in a chair next to the window, peering out at the courtyard. Dale knocked lightly and asked to come in.
The man nodded. Dale saw a collection of framed photographs on the bedside table. “Are those your children?” he asked.
“Yes, they’re all grown and live far away. They have their own kids now,” he replied. Dale, not wanting the man to be alone on Father's Day, had an idea.

Para. 1:
He went outside and got the chessboard from the table. “Shall we play chess together?" The man hesitated. He stared at the chessboard sinking into his thoughts. It took a while before the old man finally shared his thoughts with Dale. In the past, he often played chess with his children, which were some of his fondest memories. However, they all died because of a car accident and the old man has been alone ever since. "Sorry, I lied to you," the man choked, eyes brimming with tears. “Thank you for your kind help.”
Para. 2:
Dale was glad that he volunteered. Deeply touched, he now understood why the man preferred to play chess alone, and why he sat silently in his room on Father's Day. He carefully placed all the pieces on the chessboard and said, "Sir, I'm sorry for your loss. But as you may notice, I come here every Sunday. If you wish, you can play chess with me, as you did with your children. A flicker of a smile crossed the man’s face. Taking a deep breath, he settled himself opposite to Dale and moved a piece.

"Pick up the pace!" said Amy's husband. "But I can't!" Amy said, her heart beating quickly inside. "I can't go any faster! Her husband encouraged her. "Yes, you can! You're making progress every day.”
To help Amy stay healthy, her husband had been running with her for over two years. Several years ago, Amy could barely walk down the stairs of her apartment building due to fatness caused by eating disorders. She realized the problem after a failed job interview and began walking to improve her ability to move. At first, she could walk for only 15 minutes at a time. But she pushed herself every day, walking 5 minutes longer than she did the day before until she walked for an hour and eventually two. For three years, Amy kept her walking habit, slowly and painstakingly building her body shape. Then she changed her walking shoes to running shoes about two years ago and became an excellent runner.
In March 2001, an advertisement invited people to nominate(提名)an ordinary person who inspired them to bring the Olympic flame to Salt Lake City as torch bearers(火炬手)or support runners.(Support runners serve as “guardians of the flame" and run with torch bearers along the journey.)Amy's experiences touched her husband, so he nominated her to be a torch bearer. The possibility to be selected was low, but Amy wanted to try.
Running taught Amy the importance of training for a race. She pictured herself running a race and crossing the finish line. For months, she ran through her neighborhood carrying a broken-off broom handle, feeling the weight of the torch. She waved at her neighbors, pretending they were cheering crowds. She also printed a picture of a torch bearer wearing the white uniform, replaced the face with a picture of hers, and put it onto her refrigerator door.
Every day, Amy imagined herself as a torch bearer. She was training for a historic running event. On September 26th, while on her daily run through her neighborhood, an express package arrived.

Paragraph 1:
Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics. The letter read, "Congratulations! You've been selected as a support runner for the Olympic Torch Relay..." Although she wouldn't be wearing the white uniform, she wasn't disappointed. She completed the required physical examination, delivered the forms, and waited. Months later, another package arrived. It contained her official blue support runner uniform along with instructions for her part of the relay. Then on a cold day, Amy and her husband stood outside the Torch Relay collection point.
Paragraph 2:
"One of today's torch bearers can't run her part," announced the relay organizer. Then he said, "One lucky support runner will become a torch bearer. Select a person now." Luckily, Amy became the torch bearer. Holding it tight, she ran down the street filled with people waving flags. The Olympic theme song was broadcast. Amy smiled and waved to the crowds, knowing that she was carrying not only the torch, but also the Olympic spirit.

Like most children, I took my parents for granted. It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized their desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Mama and Daddy performed their angel magic with neither fanfare (炫耀) nor a desire for recognition. Because their kindness to others was something I accepted as a matter of course, I might never have evaluated this aspect of their personalities were it not for an event that my mother mentioned in passing.
Arizona in July ushered in the monsoon (季风) season, which was in full swing and just that morning had hit the Southern Arizona desert with severe thunder, lightining, rain, and high winds. Mama and Daddy chose to spend the day wandering the dry, air-conditioned mall, having a bite to eat, and taking in a movie. It seemed a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon while leaving the storm outdoors.
They chose a casual restaurant for lunch and were reading the menu when their waitress, a young woman in her mid-twenties, approached the table to introduce herself and take their order. Mama and Daddy noted that her hair was damp, as were her clothes. She was friendly but seemed to be quite tired.
Drawing her into conversation, they learned she was a single mother and a college student working two jobs. That particular day had been unkind to her. Her car broke down, forcing her to walk to work in the rain and wind. She was concerned about how being without a vehicle would affect her ability to care for her daughter and go to college. Her frustration was obvious, and the day's events had certainly left her in a certain amount of despair. They had time before the movie started to do some shopping; so they walked into a bookstore. While browsing, they came across a slim volume that discussed the presence of angels on Earth, and they immediately knew what they wanted to do. After purchasing the book, they withdrew money from the bank, stuffed the bills into the book, and put the book into a bag, which they delivered to the restaurant cashier. They requested that it be given to the waitress at first opportunity. They said there was no need to take their names. The cashier immediately went up to the waitress and told her that someone had given her a bag.
The waitress opened the bag and found some bills in a book. She was very surprised at first, with a puzzled expression on her face, then moved to tears. She glanced around for her benefactors, looked at the cashier who could only shrug, and clutched the book to her as if it were pure gold. Her unknown angels, pleased with their spread of magic, disappeared. Mama and Daddy watched from a distance, smiling at each other. Their act of kindness made the young lady understand that despite the challenges and cruelties she may encounter, the world is blessed with human beings who care about others.

I have kept a watch from my grandfather. When I was a schoolboy, the watch hung by my grandfather's bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numerals and the case was gold. It was a splendid watch and I often stared at it longingly sitting with my grandfather. He would often ask about my progress at school. The day I told him my success in the examinations,he was overcome with pleasure. “You'll be going to a new school next. And then you'll go to university, will you?”he asked. “But you'll need plenty of patience. Patience and hard work. That's the way to succeed.”
He took off the watch and wound it. “It was given me for fifty years of faithful service with my firm,” he said proudly. Finally,he handed me the watch due to the progress in school. I held it,feeling its weight. As I was leaving him,he said,“And you'll not forget what I told you?” I was suddenly very moved. “No,Granddad,” I promised,“I'll not.”
Arriving home,my mother was to hold it in trust until she considered me old enough to look after it,but I protested so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it where I could always see it. The summer ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily there. One boy,Crawley, was a welltodo fellow whose way of impressing us was to show off his possessions. His bicycle was new;his boots were of the best hide;everything,in fact, was better than ours—until he brought a watch. Crawley said his watch was absolutely the finest watch.
“I have a better watch,” I announced. “Well, show it to us,”Crawley said sneeringly(讽刺地). “I'll bring it this afternoon,” I said. “Then you'll see.” I rode my bike home, wondering how I would persuade my mother to let me take the watch. Luckily, she stepped outside and I slipped the watch into my pocket.

Paragraph 1:
I rode my bike fast to school after lunch, excitement through me. Then suddenly a dog ran out into my path. I pulled at the brake so sharply that I fell over heavily to the ground with the handles over me. I picked myself up,put a trembling hand into my pocket, and brought out what was my grandfather's proudest possession. The glass was broken, and the pointers stopped turning. I put the watch back and rode slowly to school, numb with sorrow.
Paragraph 2:
When I said my mother couldn't let me bring the watch, they burst into laughter.“What a story!” Crawley said sneeringly(ironically). The others followed his cries. I nearly wept, for it was the saddest moment of my young life. As I sat quietly at my desk,a strange feeling stole over me. It was not shame at my classmates' laughing, nor was it fear of my mother's anger. All I could think of was my grandfather's words,“Patience and hard work.” I kept the broken watch as a good reminder since then, from which I have learned to be more patient and to work harder.

In December 2020, Flores Gonzalez had her 4-year-olds, Luna and Gianella, tie their lists to two balloons and release them into the sky above their home in Liberal, Kansas. It was their way of reaching Santa Claus.
Flores Gonzalez thought it was important to do something special for her daughters because of the hard year they had during the pandemic The schools were shut down and she was out of work for more than two months. Everyone seemed to be in low spirits. She wanted to cheer the family up and wanted the girls to feel that 2020 was another year spent with mom making beautiful memories. It was never with the purpose that someone would find the balloons. She thought the balloons would just float away and disappear somewhere in a tree nearby.
But one of the balloons did make it to Alvin Bamburg, who was deer hunting in Grand Cane, Louisiana, in late December when he spotted a balloon tangled (纠缠) in a tree. He told himself he needed to get the trash out of the woods. However, when he got it, he noticed a folded yellow piece of paper sealed with a red star and it was a Christmas list from a girl named Luna. She had asked Santa to bring her candy, a Spider Man ball, a Frozen doll and a dachshund (腊肠狗) puppy, which was her most desired present.
The holidays kept Alvin Bamburg and his wife busy. They had family reunions and organized several charity parties to help whoever needed help but they didn’t forget about the list. In early January, Bamburg shared his discovery with family and friends on Facebook. “I would love to know when it was launched. It looks like it travelled 600 miles,” he wrote.

Pam Bales planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire^ Mount. On the dashboard (汽车仪表板) was a detailed plan ensuring she could return before the arrival of some forecasted bad weather. Different from former hike, though, this time, she had packed for almost every accident and intended to walk alone.
At about 8 a.m., she'd checked the weather forecast. Bales knew from experience that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better protect her core temperature as conditions changed.
Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. She was wearing a fleece tank top (绒衣)and hiking pants, and no gloves or hat because the air was mild. Thirty minutes later, she climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She now was in a quarter-zip fleece top and gloves. At 10 a.m.? the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added more layers to resist cold winds and dense fog. Making her way across the snow-covered ridge, she noticed something: a single set of footprints made by a pair of sneakers. Not giving them much thought, she walked on.
By 11 a.m.? Bales was getting cold. She decided to return to her car. On her way down, she again spotted the sneaker tracks, which suddenly made a hard left-hand turn off the trail. Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was sure the hiker lost his way in the low visibility. If Bales continued to follow the tracks, she'd add risk and time to her return. But she couldn't let this go. She turned to the left and called out, “Hello!" Nothing.
Bales followed the tracks, rounded a slight comer and saw a man sitting motionless. He wore tennis sneakers, shorts, a light jacket and fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and he had a glazed (呆滞的)look on his face. uOh5 hello/5 Bales approached and said, "What's your name?” The man didn't react. Obviously, nothing was connecting for him and he was in really big trouble.

Bales stopped being a curious and concerned hiker, and began a full-on rescue mission. Immediately, she braved the increasingly wild and fierce weather to take off the outer layers of her clothes to cover the motionless man. And then Bales tried to help the man have some hot water but in vain. At the very helpless and even hopeless moment, an idea occurred to her. Quickly collecting some ice and snow, she began to rub the man’s body, from hands to arms, from toes to legs. Bales knew clearly it was time-consuming and painstaking, but it was bound to be effective.
Over the next hour, John began to move and speak. He first showed the sign of movement through his fingers, and then opened his eyes. In a weak voice, he thanked Bales and told her how he lost his way and was trapped here. Bales kept warming him up until he signaled he could walk. With the support of Bales, the man finally managed it back to the car and was sent to the hospital timely. Out of danger, he said gratefully but for Bales’ experience and skilled rescue, he would never see the beauty of the world.
