    五、阅读单选(共30分)

(本题10)Up to now, Wood has published more than 60 diaries, and he still updates the diaries frequently on social media websites. In his first diary, he mentioned, “News is going around about a bad cold virus in Wuhan, but I feel worlds away from me and few people wear masks in public.”

He recorded in his diaries that thousands of medical workers from different provinces and cities went to Hubei to help with the anti-epidemic (抗疫). Restaurants and shops were closed down, while supermarkets checked people’s body temperatures. And community workers across the country took strict action, asking people to stay at home and helping the old buy daily necessities.

“People in some countries said these measures could cause panic among the public. However, my experience in China shows these efforts are useful and effective, which finally removed people’s fear,” Wood said.

Wood’s diaries soon attracted the world’s attention. Over 10,000 people left him messages online, and he was interviewed by Canadian CTV which later showed his diaries on its website.

“I also received greetings from my family and friends in Canada. They said they were inspired by the efforts the Chinese have made,” he said. “People from some countries thought the Chinese overreacted, and that the Chinese government had overdone in epidemic prevention and control. However, since more countries and regions have been infected (感染) by the virus, more and more people came to realize how proper and important China’s control and prevention measures are.”

Wood is working with the New World Press, which plans to make his diaries a book named The Invisible War. In this book, he hopes to share China’s anti-epidemic experience with more people across the world so they can build confidence to fight against the virus.

(本题10)We’re now used to wearing masks in public during the COVID-19 outbreak. It’s reported that people use about 300 million masks and then throw away every day in China. Where do these used masks go? You might think that they just go in a garbage bin (垃圾桶). But that’s just the first stop on the masks’ journey.

After people throw the masks into bins, garbage trucks empty the bins and take them to landfills (垃圾场). Next, workers will dump (倾倒) the masks into garbage incinerators (焚化炉) and burn them. Burning masks might not seem to be very good for the environment. Won’t it cause pollution?

The answer is “no”, according to People’s Daily. That’s because most masks are made of non-woven fabrics (无纺布). It’s an environmentally-friendly material. It can break down easily. After burning, it turns into water and carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). As long as landfills are properly disinfected (消毒良好的) and deal with their emissions (排放) correctly, burning the masks won’t cause pollution.

In fact, burning the masks can bring some benefits. The process of burning garbage can produce electricity. Burning one ton of garbage can generate more than 400 kilowatt hours () of electricity. Some people predict that there will be 162,000 tons of used masks in China this year. Burning all of them can generate 64 million kilowatt hours of electricity. This is enough to allow an electric car to drive 370 million kilometers, which is 9,250 times around the Earth’s equator (赤道).

What’s more, the slag (残渣) from burning masks can be used to make something else.

46(2)Where will our used masks end up?

APeople will bury them underground. BPeople will turn them into fuel (燃料).

CPeople will burn them in incinerators. DPeople will throw them into the ocean.

Amost masks are made of water and carbon dioxide

    Bmost mask materials are environmentally-friendly

48(2)What are the benefits of burning masks?

    a. It can make electricity.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I’d like to volunteer as a student helper in the library. In my free time, I love reading all kinds of books. I’m also good at Chinese and English. I think I can do the work well. I want to help students learn about the importance of reading because it makes people smart. I can also do what I love to do and help others at the same time. I’m always free on weekends, so I’ll be able to volunteer there on time.

I’m looking forward to your reply.

    Yours,

    Helen
