It was the small hours of the morning when we reached London Airport. I had telegrammed London from Amsterdam, and there was a hired car to meet, but there was one more unfortunate happening before I reached my flat. In all my travels I have never, but for that once, been required by the British customs to open a single bag or to do more than state that I carried no goods liable to duty. It was, of course, my fault; the extreme tiredness and nervous tension of the journey had destroyed my diplomacy (处世之道). I was, for whichever reason, so tired that I could hardly stand, and to the question, “Have you read this?” I replied with extreme foolishness, “Yes, hundreds of times.”
“And you have nothing to declare?”
“Nothing.”
“How long have you been out of this country?”
“About three months.”
“And during that time you have acquired nothing?”
“Nothing but what is on the list I have given you.”
He seemed immediately at a loss, but then he attacked. The attack, when it came, was completely unexpected.
"Where did you get that watch?"
I could have kicked myself. Two days before, when playing water games with a friend in the bath, I had forgotten to take off my ROLEX OYSTER, and it had, not unnaturally, stopped. I had gone into the market and bought, for twelve shillings and six pence, an ugly time piece that made a strange noise. It had stopped twice, without any reason, during the journey.
I explained, but I had already lost face. I brought out my old watch from a pocket, and added that I should be grateful if he would confiscate (没收) the replacement.
“It is not a question of confiscation,” he said, “ there is a fine for failing to declare dutiable goods. And now may I please examine that Rolex?”
It took another quarter of an hour to persuade him that the Rolex was not contraband (走私货). Just when I let out a sigh of relief, he began to search my luggage!
21.What can we conclude from the questions asked by the customs officer?
A.He was just doing his duty by asking the passenger some usual questions.
B.He must have noticed the writer’s ugly watch.
C.He wanted to embarrass the writer.
D.He must have noticed the writer’s tiredness.
22.What did the writer think of the watch he bought abroad?
A.He was fond of the watch because it was a Rolex.
B.He found the watch useful though it was very cheap.
C.He didn’t like the watch at all.
D.He was interested in the watch.
23.After reading the story we can infer that the writer _______.
A.knew little about the customs regulations
B.must have spent a long time at the customs and have been let go without any punishment
C.must have been fined because of carrying many contraband goods
D.might have failed in catching the hired car

Poor sleep can have a great effect on the functions inside the human body, say UK researchers. The activity of hundreds of genes was changed when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week. The researchers said the results of the recent research helped explain how poor sleep damaged health. Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to poor sleep.
What poor sleep actually does to affect health, however , is unknown. So researchers at the University of Surrey analyzed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with those after a week of fewer than six hours a night. More than 700 genes were changed due to poor sleep. Each contains the instructions for building a protein (蛋白质),so those that became more active produced more proteins―changing the chemistry of the body.
Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed―some genes naturally get weak in activity through the day,but this effect was eased (缓解)due to poor sleep. Prof Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC, "There was quite a sharp change in activity in many different kinds of genes.” Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were
affected. " Prof Smith added,"Clearly sleep is of extreme importance to rebuilding the body and maintaining (维持)a functional state".
Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the key findings were the effects on inflammation (炎症)and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes. The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could get rid of the effects of poor sleep. Dr Reddy said, “ My feeling is that sleep is particularly important to make all cells to grow again?"
24.The passage is mainly about____________.
A.why body clock was affected by poor sleep
B.how researchers found the results of poor sleep
C.how poor sleep could affect the human body
D.why proteins changed the chemistry of the body
25.What could poor sleep result in?
A.The change in genes.
B.Weaker body reactions.
C.Less active genes.
D.The decrease in proteins.
26.It can be inferred from the passage that____________.
A.researchers know little about the effect of poor sleep
B.people with poor sleep are expected to live a short life
C.a new drug to cure poor sleep will soon come into being
D.genes should grow and die naturally according to the body clock
27.According to Dr Akhilesh Reddy, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Body clock will disturb immune systems.
B.Sleep is closely related to the growth of cells.
C.Healthy problems are the results of poor sleep.
D.Sleep is important to keeping the functional state.

Group exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve physical fitness and sustain(保持)a healthy lifestyle. Group exercise is challenging, yet fun and empowering! Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups,it’s not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It’s an opportunity to be social, release endorphins(内啡肽), and improve your strength. Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.
Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they
feel lost and don’t want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision(监管)of a fitness instructor. If you’re tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend an upbeat group fitness class that’ll keep your workout on track. Don’t let fitness frighten you!
If you’re serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle,it’s extremely important to surround yourself with people who’ll provide you with the proper emotional support. I wouldn’t scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn’t expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health. Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you! Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend. Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar! Fitness can be both fun and social!
Surrounding yourself with people who’ll provide you with respect and support can be very beneficial while working towards reaching health and fitness goals. First, decide to do it for yourself and work towards staying positive. Then make sure the people you surround yourself with are supportive. Don’t let negativity ruin your motivation.

It is believed that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be
more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse (配偶) gets his or her act together, when we get a nice a car, and are able to go on a nice vocation when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have. And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school; until you go back to school; until you get married; until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching.
32.Which of the following is the commonly accepted idea?
A.Happiness is a journey.
B.We should suffer before we can enjoy.
C.We shouldn’t wait for tomorrow.
D.We are happier in the future than now.
33.Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.Happiness is A Journey
B.Life Will be Better
C.Be Brave to Face the Challenges in Life
D.Don’t Wait
34.Which of the following would the author agree?
A.Go on a vocation only when you retire.
B.Stop putting things off till tomorrow.
C.Wait for a better life.
D.Enjoy life after you’ve got a new car.
35.The author quotes Alfred Souza to prove that_________.
A.Tomorrow is always better than today
B.Time will wait for you if you work hard
C.Happiness is the way if you live in the present
D.Obstacles in life are to be avoided

There are two factors 61 (determine) an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born 62 . Human brains differ considerably, some being 63 (capable) than others. 64 however good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low intelligence unless he has opportunities 65 (learn). The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can 68 (show) by the case of the twins, Peter and Mark. 71.Our school has regularly rest hours for students. However, we can often see many students do their lessons or other things before bedtime. They usually stay up until midnight.
Teenagers need enough sleep daily. Stay up late may not only do harm to their health, but also make students later for class or sleepy in class. Thus, they miss everything they should have learned.
It is blameless to stay up once in while if we do have to take up our rest time for some urgent things, so don’t make it a habit. It is advised that young people had better not stay up late, that we should bear in minds. Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. We really need it to make a change to the unhealthy lifestyle so as to ensure our rest time.
