The children ran deeper into the tunnel. Before long, they found a boy. He was lying on the ground.
“What happened?” Roberta asked him.
“I’m Jim. I was walking through the tunnel when I tripped. I think I’ve broken my leg.” “The 11:15 train is due soon,” Peter said. “We must get you out of here.”
“I’ve been here for two hours,” the boy said. “I was on my way to the station to catch the train. It’s quicker through the tunnel than along the road.”

Dear Jeff,
You can’t believe what happened last night. Dad took us out to a famous restaurant, but there weren’t many people there last night. “An unforgettable experience,” their website says. Well, it certainly was unforgettable! We ordered the “exotic surprise” and thought it was going to be wonderful, but it was terrible! The first course(一道菜)was chicken and chips! The chicken was bad, but the chips were worse. Then they gave us “picnic-style special ham(火腿)with strawberries”. When the waiter brought it, we saw there weren’t any strawberries but small ham sandwiches under some salad. You can’t believe what happened next. The waiter tried to put the dishes on the table, but he drop(弄掉)one. And then the worst thing happened. He picked the sandwich up from the floor, put it back on the dish and gave it to Mum. Mum angrily asked him to take the sandwich away. “Aren’t you hungry?” the waiter asked. My dad also got really angry and told him off. But he only laughed! I tried ice cream. But I didn’t eat much.
Next time we’ll take you to the same restaurant! Haha.
Yours,
Thomas

I used to be an active girl. But two years ago, an English speaking competition held in my school changed me a lot.
I stood on the stage(讲台)for the first time. I was so nervous that my brain(大脑)suddenly became empty. Not long after I began my speech, the hall turned noisy. It seemed that they were laughing at me. I knew I failed.
From then on, I became quiet and always stayed alone. I didn’t want to express my ideas in public, even in class. Every time I wanted to say something, I thought people would laugh at me. My friends couldn’t understand me, and they left me, one by one.
One day, my science teacher asked us why trees in forests were much taller than those in the wild. “Ha, what a silly question!” I thought.
“There’s not enough space in the woods for trees to expand their branches. Of course they have to grow taller than others. The trees in the wild needn’t do that since there’s enough space,” I said in a low voice.
To my surprise, the teacher said, “Yes, you’re right. It is a competition.” My face turned red right now. I hadn’t spoken for a long time, especially in public.
Then the teacher explained how trees in forests had to grow taller to receive more sunlight. If not, they would die. This also happened in our society.
What’s more, the tree that doesn’t live in a crowd is just like a person who has no friends in life.
I raised my head slowly and found the teacher was looking at me. His eyes were as warm as sunshine. I realized that I must stand up and face the truth.

Dear Tom,
There was an English week in our school last month. Students at our school worked hard to make it a big success.
The interesting activities during the English week offered a great chance for the students to practice English. Some students were good at telling stories and they took part in a story-telling competition in which each of them should tell a story of China in English. English Corner also attracted many students to share some ideas on how to improve their studies. In the school hall, an English singing competition was one of the most popular activities among the students. The singers gave fantastic performance on the stage just like super stars. The audience all enjoyed the beauty of the language as well as the wonderful music.
What a fun and educational English week! I had a good time when I communicated in English with my friends, and found myself to be more confident while using English in daily life.
I am hoping to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,

例文2:
Dear Tom,
There was an English week in our school last month. I’d like to tell you about it.
There were many interesting activities for students to use English. In a story-telling competition, students tried their best to tell stories of China in English. Some students went to English Corner to share some good ways to improve their studies. Also, students from Grade 8 put on an English play in the school hall. Students enjoyed watching it and became more and more interested in learning English.
I think the English week was fun and educational. I had a good time and found it not that difficult to use English when I took part in the activities. I also made some friends who shared the same interest in reading English novels. In addition, I’ve learnt some useful English sayings and idioms. I think it’s worth to have an English week every year.
I am hoping to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Very soon after Roberta wrote to the old gentleman, the three children were walking through the tunnel when they heard a cry.
“It’s also more dangerous,” Roberta said.
Peter said. “We’ve got to get you out.” Then Peter and Phyllis helped Jim up. It was a difficult journey, but the children got there before the 11:15 train did. Finally, a signalman helped them and took Jim to Peter’s home.
Mother called for a doctor and helped Jim rest. The doctor said Jim needed to stay in bed for at least a month. Mother wrote a letter to Jim’s grandfather. She gave the letter to the doctor, who promised to post it.
“Can he stay with us?” Peter said. “We’d love to have a friend our own age.” “Sure,” said Mother.
A few days later, Jim’s grandfather came to take Jim home. The children were surprised to see him. “You’re our old gentleman!” they exclaimed.
“That’s right,” he said. “And I got your letter, Roberta.” “What letter?” Mother demanded
“Roberta wrote to me about her father,” the old gentleman said. “I was not surprised by what she said. I have thought for a long time that he was innocent. It was not possible that a guilty(有罪的)man could have such wonderful children. I think I can help you. Your father will soon be fee again.”
Two weeks later, Father came back home.

Dear Jeff,
You can’t believe what happened last night.

Maria was a teacher in my high school. I still remember the first time I saw her. It was in the ninth grade. We met on a stage (舞台) design team for a play and she was one of the directors. She had an unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking. For some reason, she then made a deep impression on me.
Maria would ask me for my opinion. She wanted to know how I thought we should deal with things. At first, I had no idea how to answer because I knew nothing about stage design.
