There have been numerus attempts t create an all-plastic bike. But mst have never passed thrugh the prttype stage(原始阶段). Igus,a Germany-based manufacturer f high-perfrmance plastics, and Dutch start-up MTRL aim t change that with the igus: bike—the wrld's first urban bike crafted almst entirely frm recycled plastic.
Igus CEO Frank Blasé first gt the idea while vacatining n a Flrida beach in 2009. A cnversatin with sme emplyees frm a rental cmpany made him aware f the challenges f maintaining beach bicycles. The cntinuus expsure t sand, wind and salt water caused the bikes t rust rapidly. Many had t be replaced in nly three mnths.
The igus: bike, unveiled at a German trade shw, is maintainable and rust-free. It can be left utdrs in all weathers and des nt require lubricant il(润滑油)t reduce frictin between parts. Since it des nt attract sand, dust r dirt, the bike can be cleaned with a garden hse(水管)in secnds.
"As all cmpnents are made f plastic, n part f the bike rusts, even the gears —bicycle gears made f plastic were unthinkable fr a lng time, "Blasé says.
The igus: bike will als help cmbat the wrld's plastic pllutin. The cmpany says a single adult bike gives new life t abut 16 kilgrams f single-use plastic that wuld therwise chke ur landfills r waterways.
Currently, 90 percent f the igus: bike is made using recycled plastic. This includes the bicycle's frame, bearings, pedals and wheel rims. Igus and MTRL believe future versins will be made entirely frm recycled plastic.
"Frm cean plastics t mtin plastics — the igus: bike cncept has what it takes t becme a high-tech eclgical prduct, "says MTRL c-funder Benjamin Alderse Baas.
The plastic bikes are expected t cme nt the market in early 2023. An adult mdel, made entirely frm recycled plastic, will cst abut E1400. A slightly cheaper versin made using new plastic and an electric bike are als in the wrks. Igus als plans n sharing its technlgy with ther bicycle manufacturers.

Many peple think wrk meetings are a waste f time, and that might be because mst meetings keep emplyees frm wrking well: One survey f 76 cmpanies fund that prductivity was 71 percent higher when meetings were reduced by 40 percent. Unnecessary meetings waste $37 billin in salary hurs a year in the U. S. alne,
Many meetings ccur withut a specific reasn. Anther mtive fr meetings is what sme schlars call the Mere Urgency effect, in which we engage in tasks—such as a meeting where each persn recites what they're wrking n, whether thers need that infrmatin r nt—t help us feel like we are accmplishing smething actual.
But the real prblem with meetings is nt lack f prductivity—it's unhappiness. When meetings are a waste f time, jb satisfactin declines. And when jb satisfactin declines, happiness in general falls. Thus, fr a large ppulatin, eliminating meetings—r at least minimizing them—is ne f the mst straightfrward ways t increase well-being.
Nbdy likes excessive and unprductive meetings. First, they generally increase fatigue. Yu have prbably experienced a day f meetings, after which yu are exhausted and haven't accmplished much. Secnd, peple tend t engage in "surface acting"(faking emtins that are deemed apprpriate) during wrk meetings. Finally, researchers have fund that the strngest predictr f meeting effectiveness is active invlvement by the participants. If yu are asking yurself, "Why am I here?" yu are nt likely t think that the meeting is a gd use f yur time—which is bviusly bad fr yur wrk satisfactin.
Taken tgether, the research n meetings shws that if yu want t be happier at wrk (r want yur emplyees t be happier), yu shuld fight against the time-cnsuming, unprductive meetings at every pprtunity. If there is ne rule t remember abut wrk meetings, it might be that they are a necessary evil. They are necessary as rganizatins need them fr prper cmmunicatin, but they are evil in that they are nt irreplaceable, and shuld thus be used as little as pssible fr the sake f prductivity and happiness.
    8. Why des the authr mentin the survey in Para 1?
    A. T explain the survey. B. T intrduce the tpic.
    C. T stress the imprtance f meeting. D. T state the disadvantage f meeting.
    9. Which f the fllwing best explains “eliminating” underlined in Para 3?
    A. Reducing. B. Hsting. C. Increasing. D. Aviding.
    10. What is mainly talked abut in Para 4?
    A. Hw t increase peple's jb satisfactin.
    B. The imprtance and necessity f minimizing meetings.
    C. Why excessive and unprductive meetings lwer jb satisfactin.
    D. Active invlvement by the participants indicates meeting effectiveness.
    11. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
    A. Wrk meetings—A necessary evil.
    B. Wrk meetings—The less, the better.
    C. Wrk meetings—The mre, the better.
    D. Wrk meetings—Excessive and unprductive.

Hw can peple speak their mind withut saying anything? This is a questin that scientists have aimed t answer fr a lng time. Researchers recently brught an upgraded device that can translate users' brain waves int daily speech.
Previusly, the team led by Edward Chang at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc, develped an Al-based system that can identify up t 50 cmmnly used wrds based n the participant's brain waves. The participant was a paralyzed(瘫痪的)man wh had been implanted with 16 electrdes(电极)under his skull.
Accrding t their paper published in Nvember, the team upgraded the system which can nw translate thughts int cmplete sentences n a cmputer screen.
Their tests shwed that the device culd decde silently spken letters frm a 1, 152-wrd vcabulary at a speed f abut 29 characters per minute. The accuracy was up t 94 percent. "It shws strng prmise fr restring cmmunicatin by tapping int the brain's natural speech machinery, "Chang said t the university's news website.
Hwever, this methd can still be prblematic since users still need t underg surgery. Scientists at the University f Texas, US, have tried t translate peple's thughts withut even tuching their heads, reprted Live Science.
The new technique is called fMRI, r functinal magnetic resnance imaging(功能性磁共振成像). It's a safer way f "reading" brain activity. Active brain cells have mre xygen. By tracking these cells, scientists can translate brain activity.
The team asked participants t listen t16 hurs f radi shws while scanning their brains. Then they used a cmputer algrithm(算法)t create a stry based n the fMRI recrding. It matched the radi shws pretty well.
Als, the algrithm culd basically explain the stry f a silent mvie that the participants watched. The team aims t develp this technlgy s that it can be used in brain-cmputer interfaces(脑机接口)designed fr peple wh cannt speak r type.
    12. What d we knw abut the device mentined in Para 2?
    A. It was implanted int a man's heart.
    B. It can help restre patients' lst memry.
    C. It was develped thrugh cperatin.
    D. It can identify abut 50 rarely used wrds.
    13. Hw des fMRI “read” peple’s minds?
    A. By tracking their active brain cells.
    B. By putting electrdes int their brains.
    C. By recrding their reactin t radi shws.
    D. By matching their brain activity with their habits.
    14. Why is fMRI chsen cmpared t the first device mentined in the stry?
    A. It's cheaper. B. It's mre accurate. C. It's smaller in size. D. It's safer.
    15. What can be cncluded abut fMRI frm the last tw paragraphs?
    A. It can nly read what participants hear.
    B. It can be used in brain-cmputer interfaces.
    C. It can read every detail f participants' minds.
    D. It cannt wrk ut what peple imagine in their heads.
