Every year the Eurpean Cmmissin awards the STARTS Prize t prjects that cmbine artistic expressin, technlgy and scientific research. This year's shrtlisted prjects tuched n tpics ranging frm simple technlgy t DNA data strage, but the final tw Grand Prize winners bth fcused n envirnment and sustainability.
The Grand Prize in Innvative Cllabratin went t "Remix El Barri", a cperatin between Anastasia Pistfidu, Marin Real, Fab Lab Barcelna and the Institute fr Advanced Architecture f Catalnia.
The prject identified fd waste streams in the Barcelna neighburhd f Pblenu and wrked with lcal restaurants and Fab Lab Barcelna t turn this waste int different materials. In this circular ecnmy prject, waste becmes a resurce again. Twelve designers used these materials t create a variety f prducts, such as a jacket made frm a material surced frm range peels, r sap made with used cking ils.
The ther winner was "Oceans in Transfrmatin", which was awarded the Grand Prize fr Artistic Explratin. In this prject, Territrial Agency's Jhn Palmesin and Ann-Sfi Rönnskg wanted t find a way t visualise the many different types f knwledge we have abut the cean.
Their wrk shws that scientific research is fragmented. Each research activity lks at ne aspect f the cean-sea level, fr example, r bidiversity—and usually in just ne lcatin. That makes it difficult t get a brad verview f what exactly is happening with the ceans as a whle. T tackle this, "Oceans in Transfrmatin" cmbined different research data t create a prject that shws the wide variety f infrmatin that's ut there.

Scientists have cme up with a new way f identifying animals in an area by testing DNA taken in frm the air. The researchers believe their new methd culd help scientists keep track f animals that are hard t spt, including endangered animals.

One cllected samples frm different lcatins at Denmark's Cpenhagen Z, and the ther at Hamertn Z Park in the UK. The scientists used slightly different methds t cllect their samples. But basically, bth teams cllected extremely tiny bits f DNA nt very high quality filters(过滤器).
In the labratry, they gt the DNA frm the filters and made cpies f it t study. By cmparing their samples with examples f DNA frm different animals, the scientists were able t identify many different animals at the zs.
Each team nly discvered abut the ther experiment after they had written a paper abut their wn results. Instead f cmpeting, the tw decided t cmbine their results and publish a paper tgether.
Bth teams are excited abut the ways this new methd culd be used in the wild. Scientists have been lking fr better ways t track endangered animals withut interfering with them. If researchers knw where animals live, they can d a better jb f prtecting them. "The next step is t figure ut hw t take this methd int nature," says Dr. Bhmann, ne f the scientists n the Cpenhagen team.
