Nla(August 21,1974—Nvember 22,2015) was a nrthern white rhin wh lived at the San Dieg Z Safari Park near Escndid,Califrnia. At her death,she was ne f nly fur remaining nrthern white rhins in the wrld. The ther three lived in Kenya. Wrld Rhin Day,held n September 22,is t raise awareness(意识) f the less than 30,000 ther rhins left n Earth.
“Rhins need ur help tday,nt tmrrw,” Nla’s lead keeper Jane Kennedy said.“Last year we lst ver 1,200 rhins just in Suth Africa. If we cntinue t lse mre than 1,000 rhins a year,in 10 t 20 years all the rhins n the planet will be gne. ”
“Unfrtunately,mst animals are in danger f dying ut because f humans,”Kennedy says.“Humans have either pached animals,r because there are ver seven billin f us,we’ve taken up t much f the wrld’s resurces.” Pachers illegally hunt rhins fr their hrns. They sell the hrns fr thusands f dllars per pund,t be used fr art,jewelry,and decratins. Experts believe that ne rhin is pached every eight hurs.
In 1975,the San Dieg Z Institute fr Cnservatin Research started the Frzen Z,a prgram thrugh which researchers have cllected cell samples frm mre than 8,000 different types f animals,including the nrthern white rhin. Scientists hpe that by studying the rhin cells,they will get greater understanding f it,and will find ways t increase its numbers.
Jane Kennedy describes Wrld Rhin Day as a celebratin f rhins alng with an awareness campaign fr everybdy acrss the wrld t knw that rhins need ur help.
