Three very strong women — my mother, my grandmother and Melinda — deserve big credit for helping me become the man I am today. But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind teacher and librarian I’ve never written about before, also had a huge influence on me.
Mrs. Caffiere died in 2006, shortly after reaching her 100th birthday. Before she passed away, I had an opportunity to visit her and thank her for the important role she played in my life.
When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle’s View Ridge Elementary, and I was a fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big weaknesses, like dysgraphia (书写障碍), and had a totally messy desk with books around. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read — something that was cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wings and helped make it okay for me to be a messy, nerdy boy who was reading lots of books. She pulled me out of my shell. She started by asking questions like, “What do you like to read?” and “What are you interested in?” Then she found me a lot of books. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I’d read them, she would make the time to discuss them with me. “Did you like the book? Why? What did you learn?” She listened to what I had to say patiently. Through those book conversations in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.
Teachers generally don’t want to burden their students with extra reading beyond the homework they’ve given. But I learned from Mrs. Caffiere that my teachers had so much knowledge to share. Looking back on it, there’s no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. I should give great thanks to the devoted teacher and librarian who helped me find my strengths when I was nine years old. It’s remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.

6. What do we know about Mrs. Caffiere?
A. She had the greatest influence on the writer.
B. She influenced the writer’s decision on helping American children.

B 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据第三段“I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big weaknesses, like dysgraphia (书写障碍), and had a totally messy desk with books around. (我拼命地想不被人注意,因为我有一些很大的弱点,比如书写障碍,而且桌子上堆满了书)”可知,作者当时因为自身有书写障碍等弱点,很不自信,不希望大家关注他,回避众人的关注,而且课桌上书本凌乱堆放。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read — something that was cool for girls but not for boys. (我试图掩盖我喜欢阅读的事实——一些对女孩来说很酷,但对男孩来说不太合适的东西。)”可知,作者喜欢看书,但是不想被人知道;第四段“Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wings and helped make it okay for me to be a messy, nerdy boy who was reading lots of books. (卡菲埃太太对我呵护有加,帮助我(知道)成为一个邋遢、书呆子、读了很多书的男孩没什么大不了)”可知,卡菲埃太太改变了作者的观点,喜欢阅读不是坏事,以及下文“She started by asking questions like, ‘What do you like to read?’ and ‘What are you interested in?’ Then she found me a lot of books. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I’d read them, she would make the time to discuss them with me. ‘Did you like the book? Why? What did you learn?’ She listened to what I had to say patiently. (她首先问了这样的问题:‘你喜欢读什么书?’以及‘你对什么感兴趣?’然后她给我找了很多书。例如,她给了我她读过的伟大传记。一旦我读了,她就会抽出时间和我讨论。‘你喜欢这本书吗?为什么?你学到了什么?’她耐心地听我说。)”可知,卡菲埃太太鼓励作者读书,还耐心跟作者交流。由此推知,She pulled me out of my shell,是指卡菲埃太太通过鼓励作者读书、交流,使作者从“试图掩盖喜欢阅读的事实”转为“能与老师进行阅读交流”的男孩,老师鼓励作者大方展示出对阅读的喜爱。
根据最后一段“Looking back on it, there’s no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. I should give great thanks to the devoted teacher and librarian who helped me find my strengths when I was nine years old. It’s remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.
通读全文,尤其是第一段最后一句“But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind teacher and librarian I’ve never written about before, also had a huge influence on me. (但布兰奇·卡菲埃,一位非常善良的老师和图书管理员,我以前从未写过,对我也有巨大的影响)”可知,本文介绍了一位影响作者人生方向的老师兼图书管理员,卡菲埃太太。故选A项。

The sporty all-electric car from the Netherlands resembles a BMW coupe, but is unique: It captures more carbon than it emits.
“Our end goal is to create a more sustainable future,” said Jens Lahaije, finance manager for TU/ecomotive, the Eindhoven University of Technology student team that created the car.
Called ZEM, for zero emission mobility, the two-seater houses a Cleantron lithium-ion (锂离子) battery pack, and most of its parts are 3D-printed from recycled plastics, Lahaije said. The target is to minimize carbon dioxide emitted during the car’s full lifespan, from manufacturing to recycling, he added.
Battery electric vehicles emit virtually no CO2 during operation compared with fuel vehicles, but battery cell production can create so much pollution that it can take EVs (Electric Vehicles) tens of thousands of miles to achieve “carbon parity (相等)” with comparable fossil-fueled models.
“Direct air capture is a fairly new method of cleaning the air by capturing CO2 into a filter (过滤器). We have made use of this innovative technology and implemented this in our car. The idea is very simple: while we’re driving air will move through our self-designed filters and the CO2 will be captured and stored.”
ZEM uses two filters that can capture up to 2 kilograms of CO2 over 20,000 miles of driving, the Eindhoven team estimated. They imagine a future when filters can be emptied at charging stations.
The students are showing their vehicle on a US promotional tour to universities and companies from the East Coast to Silicon Valley.
8. What does the article tell us about ZEM?
A. The four-seater is equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack.
B. All of its parts are modern plastics.
C. The process of manufacturing the car creates little pollution.
D. The CO2 can be caught and stored while we’re driving.
9. What does the underlined word “emit” mean in paragraph 4?
A. take in B. give off C. put aside D. clear off
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 5?
A. What challenges the students met.
B. How the students got this idea.
C. How this innovative technology works.
D. How this technology can be improved.
11. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. A Newly-invented Sporty Car Has Gained Great Popularity.
B. All-electric Car or Fuel-engine Car?
C. Dutch Students Devise Carbon-eating Electric Vehicle.
D. The Advantages of the Sporty All-electric Car.
D 9. B 10. C 11. C

根据第一段“The sporty all-electric car from the Netherlands resembles a BMW coupe, but is unique: It captures more carbon than it emits.(这辆来自荷兰的运动型全电动汽车类似于宝马双门跑车,但很独特:它捕获的碳比排放的碳多)”和倒数第三段的“The idea is very simple: while we’re driving, air will move through our self-designed filters and the CO2 will be captured and stored.(这个想法很简单:当我们开车时,空气将通过我们自行设计的过滤器,二氧化碳将被捕获并储存)”可知,关于ZEM文章告诉我们,驾驶时二氧化碳会被捕获并保存。
根据划线词后“but battery cell production can create so much pollution that it can take EVs (Electric Vehicles) tens of thousands of miles to achieve “carbon parity (相等)” with comparable fossil-fueled models.(但电池的生产会造成大量污染,因此电动汽车需要行驶数万英里才能实现“碳当量”与化石燃料模型相当)”中表示转折意义的but可知,全句是指“对比燃油汽车,电动汽车几乎不会排放二氧化碳,但生产电池时所产生的污染相当于燃油汽车行驶数万英里所带来的污染量”,由此可知emit意为“排放”,与give off同义。
根据第五段““Direct air capture is a fairly new method of cleaning the air by capturing CO2 into a filter (过滤器). We have made use of this innovative technology and implemented this in our car. The idea is very simple: while we’re driving, air will move through our self-designed filters and the CO2 will be captured and stored.”(“直接空气捕获是一种通过将CO2捕获到过滤器中来清洁空气的新方法(过滤器),我们已经利用了这项创新技术,并将其应用于我们的汽车中。这个想法很简单:当我们开车时,空气将通过我们自行设计的过滤器,二氧化碳将被捕获并储存。”)”可知,本段主要介绍了这种创新技术的工作原理。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,并结合第一段“The sporty all-electric car from the Netherlands resembles a BMW coupe, but is unique: It captures more carbon than it emits.(这辆来自荷兰的运动型全电动汽车类似于宝马双门跑车,但很独特:它捕获的碳比排放的碳多)”可知,文章主要介绍荷兰Eindhoven University of Technology的学生团队研发了一款能吸收碳的电动汽车。
D
Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical (实证的) basis. They are discovering how to design space that promotes creativity, keeps people focused and leads to relaxation.
Researchers show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Lower ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.
In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence a person’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains in a standard test of attention. According to another study at the University of Georgia, using nature to improve the focus of attention seems to pay off academically. They found that students in classroom with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores in tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than those students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.
A recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim (暗淡的) light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.
So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. “We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw,” architect David Allison says, “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with.”
12. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Lower ceilings may promote creativity.
B. Lower ceilings make people think more freely.
C. Higher ceilings inspire creative thinking.
D. Higher ceilings encourage people to focus on details.
13. Where are students more likely to get higher grades?
A. In the classroom with dim light.
B. In the classroom with round-edged furniture.
C. In the classroom close to roads or parking lots.
D. In the classroom surrounded by open greenness.
14. What can we infer from architect David Allison’s words?
A. More researches need to be done to work out generalized patterns.
B. Scientists have a very limited number of studies.
C. The problem is too difficult for researchers to solve.
D. The research has given exact answers to the problem.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The importance of house design.
B. Scientific researches on space design.
C. The effects of ceiling design.
D. A new trend of space design.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据文章第二段“Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Lower ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook. (她的研究表明,更高的天花板鼓励人们更自由地思考,这可能会导致他们建立更抽象的联系。另一方面,较低的天花板可能会激发更详细的前景)”可知,高的天花板,可以促进人们自由的思考,建立抽象的联系,从而更具有创造性。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章的第三段“They found that students in classroom with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores in tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than those students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.(他们发现,与那些教室主要忽略道路和停车场的学生相比,在窗户外至少50英尺处视野畅通的教室里的学生在词汇、语言艺术和数学测试中得分更高)”可知,视野畅通的教室有利于学生获得更高的分。
根据文章最后一段““We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw,” architect David Allison says, “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with.”(“我们的研究数量非常有限,所以我们几乎是在用稻草来看待这个问题,”建筑师大卫·艾利森说,“你如何回答非常具体的问题,并广泛、广泛地使用这些问题?这就是我们都在努力解决的问题。”)”可推知,我们的研究数量有限,所以需要更多的研究来找出广义模式。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors.(建筑师长期以来一直认为,我们居住的地方会影响我们的思想、感受和行为)”可知,本文主要介绍了我们居住的地方会长期的影响我们的思想、感受和行为,即空间设计的科学研究。故选B。
