Alongside air and water, food is a necessity for human beings to survive. But it's a lot more than that. As Mariette DiChristina of Scientific American wrote: "The closest relationship we will ever have is not with any fellow human being. Instead, it is between our bodies and our food."
Nowadays, for most people in the world's richest countries, food is a hobby, an interest, and even something fashionable. Turn on the TV in the US, UK or France, and you'll find at least one channel feeding this popular obsession (痴迷). And most of us know at least one person who thinks of himself as a "foodie". It's almost impossible nowadays to check our social media apps without at least two or three photos of delicious meals appearing on our screen—however annoying we may find it.
But behind the fancy recipes and social media bragging (吹嘘), many of us forget how much we take food for granted. This is why World Food Day is held each year by the United Nations(UN) on Oct. 16. The day allows the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to stress both the progress that has been made against hunger, and the great amount of progress that still needs to be made. Take Kenya for example. This East African nation has been suffering terrible droughts. The result is that people are beginning to starve (挨饿) and children in particular are suffering. This may seem shocking to know, especially as many cultures outside of Africa think of food in a completely different way.
So what can we do on World Food Day? One good way to spend it would be to feel humble and value what we have. After all, food is essential for our survival, but not everyone is as lucky as we are when it comes to dinner time.
- Why are Mariette DiChristina's words mentioned?
A. To discuss a new problem in the food industry.
B. To point out the food shortage problem worldwide.
C. To stress the connection between food and humans.
D. To show the importance of food for human survival.
- What can be inferred about food shows on TV?
A. They turn many people into foodies.
B. They are very popular among viewers.
C. They are replaced by social media apps.
D. They often mislead people about food issues.
- Why is World Food Day celebrated?
A. To call on people to reduce food waste.
B. To stress and popularize food cultures.
C. To show the progress in achieving food safety.
D. To raise awareness of the issues behind hunger.
- What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Give more food to those in need.
B. Share food with unlucky people.
C. Feel grateful for the food we eat.
D. Skip dinner sometimes to save food.
Family conflict affects everyone. (1) , you may want to mediate(调解) to make everyone's life easier. It's worth it to try to smooth things over.
● (2) . It can be difficult to look at family situations objectively, so before trying to mediate disagreements, make sure you look at all sides of the argument. While you shouldn't take sides when trying to mediate, you don't want anymore to think you are overlooking their point of view. Take some time to think about why everyone feels wronged or hurt in a situation.
●Encourage everyone to control their feelings. It's not uncommon for tensions to run high when discussing family conflict. (3) . Try to control the emotional outbursts as much as you can. While everyone has a right to their personal feelings, make it clear these feelings must be expressed in an appropriate, productive way.
●Try hard for forgiveness. Even if you were not directly involved in the argument, you are probably affected by the atmosphere in some way. Choose forgiveness. Remember, you can't control someone else's actions but you can control your own response. You can also encourage other family members to forgive. (4) .
●Work on fixing the relationships. (5) , you can offer suggestions how family members could better treat one another in the future. Think about what has been said during mediation. Look for areas where change is needed. You should also agree to work actively on letting go of the conflict. For example, "for the next couple of months, let's agree not to bring this up."
A. Think about everyone's view
B. Have a healthy discussion
C. There may be times when people get sensitive and angry
D. If there's an ongoing argument between family members
E. Although it's not your job to offer exact causes of action
F. If a family member reacts very violently to an unimportant affair
G. However, remember you cannot force someone to feel a particular way

On the whole, the dinner was a success. The audience was also full of praise.
Alongside air and water, food is a necessity for human beings to survive. But it's a lot more than that.(除了空气和水,食物是人类生存的必需品。 Instead, it is between our bodies and our food.(相反,它在我们的身体和食物之间。)
Nowadays, for most people in the world's richest countries, food is a hobby, an interest, and even something fashionable. Turn on the TV in the US, UK or France, and you'll find at least one channel feeding this popular obsession
The day allows the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to stress both the progress that has been made against hunger, and the great amount of progress that still needs to be made.(这一天让联合国粮食及农业组织(Food and Agriculture Organization)强调了在消除饥饿方面取得的进展,以及仍需取得的巨大进展。)
One good way to spend it would be to feel humble and value what we have. After all, food is essential for our survival, but not everyone is as lucky as we are when it comes to dinner time.(一个很好的消费方式是感到谦卑并珍惜我们所拥有的。
5~9.【答案】D、A、C、G、E
中conflict(冲突)与D项(如果家庭成员之间有持续的争吵)中的argument(争吵)意思上呼应。且与下文you may want to mediate(调解) to make everyone's life easier.(你可能想要调解,让每个人的生活更轻松。)
While you shouldn't take sides when trying to mediate, you don't want anymore to think you are overlooking their point of view. 故选A。
3. 上文It's not uncommon for tensions to run high when discussing family conflict.(在讨论家庭冲突时,紧张情绪高涨并不罕见)中的tensions(紧张)和下文Try to control the emotional outbursts as much as you can.(尽量控制情绪的爆发。)
Remember, you can't control someone else's actions but you can control your own response. You can also encourage other family members to forgive.(记住,你不能控制别人的行为,但是你可以控制自己的反应。
5. 分析句子结构可知,此处需填入一个从句,下文you can offer suggestions how family members could better treat one another in the future.(你可以提出建议,使家庭成员在将来可以更好地相互对待。)
