JOURNEYS BY DOG SLED Abut 120 years ag, gld was discvered in the Yukn, in nrthern Canada, starting a gld rush as tens f thusands f men--and wmen--travelled there frm arund the wrld in the hpe f making their frtunes. There were n real rads in that area back then, s it was difficult t travel verland in summer. Hwever, nce the grund was cvered in ice and snw, ne culd travel lng distances quickly by sled. Of curse, the winter weather was t harsh fr hrses--they wuld die in the cld. Dgs, n the ther hand, thrived in the cld because f their thick fur, s then--and even nw--dgs were used n lng jurneys thrugh the snw carrying peple and gds n sleds. As a yung man, Jack Lndn jined the gld rush and jurneyed frm Califrnia t Alaska and the Yukn. Thugh, like mst miners, he did nt get rich lking fr gld, he saw first-hand dgs were a necessary part f travel in the far nrth. Sme friends he met there had a large dg, a husky and St Bernard mixed breed. This dg seemed particularly tugh and and served as inspiratin fr the main dg character in Lndn’s nvel, The Call f the Wild.
Lndn thught f his time in the nrth as ne f his life’s greatest adventures. When he returned t Califrnia, he was unable t find a jb. Thse were difficult times in Califrnia, which was still islated and cut ff frm much f the American ecnmy. With Alaska fresh in his mind, he tried t sell the stry f his jurney up nrth t several publishers and magazines, but n ne seemed interested. Later, Lndn wrte a shrt stry abut a dg in the far nrth wh survives many adventures and ends up killing his master. But almst immediately after its publicatin, Lndn regretted it and felt that he needed t “set the stry straight” by shwing hw nble and lyal dgs were, especially dgs in the far nrth, where travel and survival was difficult. It was this that started him writing his famus nvel, The Call f the Wild. The new stry was quickly picked up by a magazine and serialised int fur parts. It became extremely ppular. Later, it was published in bk frmat and has never been ut f print since.
The her f Lndn’s nvel was Buck, a large family dg wned by a wealthy judge: “Buck was neither huse-dg nr kennel-dg. The whle realm was his ... he was king -- king ver all creeping, crawling, flying things f Judge Miller’s place, humans included. His father, Elm, a huge St Bernard, had been the Judge’s inseparable cmpanin, and Buck bid fair t fllw in the way f his father: He was nt s large--he weighed nly ne hundred and frty punds--fr his mther, Shep, had been a Sctch shepherd dg. Nevertheless, ne hundred and frty punds, t which was added the dignity that cmes f gd living and universal respect, enabled him t carry himself in right ryal fashin. During the fur years since his puppyhd he had lived the life f a sated aristcrat; he had a fine pride in himself, was even a trifle egtistical. as cuntry gentlemen smetimes becme because f their insular situatin. But he saned himself by nt becming a mere pampered huse-dg. Hunting and kindred utdr delights had kept dwn the fat and hardened his muscles: and t him, as t the cld-tubbing races, the lve f water had been a tnic and a health preserver.”
Buck’s life was wnderful and happy, until he was stlen and sld t men wh tk him t Canada, where he became a sled dg used fr travel in the harsh Yukn winter. The bk was an early example f an adventure tale tld frm an animal’s pint f view, by an animal with human emtins and ways f seeing the wrld: “Clse in under the sheltering rck Buck made his nest. S snug and warm was it, that he was lath t leave it when Francis distributed the fish which he had first thawed ver the fire. But when Buck finished his ratin and returned, he fund his nest ccupied. A warning snarl tld him that the trespasser was Spitz. Till nw Buck had avided truble with his enemy, but this was t much. The beast in him rared. He sprang upn Spitz with a fury which surprised them bth, and Spitz particularly, fr his whle experience with Buck had gne t teach him that his rival was an unusually timid dg, wh managed t hld his wn nly because f his great weight and size.” The excerpt abve shws hw Lndn created a dg that nt nly had qualities that humans recgnise in dgs, but als an emtinal cmplexity that humans als recgnise in each ther. In this way, Lndn was able t create a character that was bth nn-human and human. This made the adventure tale engaging and fascinating, ffering urban Americans insight int what life in the far nrth was like fr dgs and humans.
Just as Buck as a dg is used t pull sleds n lng jurneys, the stry itself is ne f a lng inner jurney. Buck begins his life in a cmfrtable, lving hme where he must depend upn his human master fr everything. But later he is frced t survive under harsh circumstances in a difficult enirnment. There, hwever, he finds a strength that he did nt realise he had, and becmes an essential part f his wner’s life. Yet, as much as his human wner needs Buck fr survival, Buck discvers that he n lnger needs humans. S, when his wner dies, he escapes int the frest and jins the wlves, finally discvering true freedm and independence. Sadly, Jack Lndn died yung in 1916 at the age f 40. There is debate abut hw he died exactly, as Lndn had suffered frm several painful diseases in the last years f his life, including scurvy which had been caused by his travels in the Yukn earlier in life. After his death, interest in The Call f the Wild, and sme f his ther wrks, grew much strnger. Rmantic ideas f the tragic authr wh passed away when he was still yung and handsme made his wrks ever mre ppular. Tday, The Call f the Wild is cnsidered ne f the mst imprtant nvels f Amenican literature, and students in high schl and cllege are ften required t read it.
