In their apartment,Mr.Chen spread the brken pieces ut like a jigsaw puzzle.Taking a thin knife, Mr. Chen spreads lacquer acrss the sharp edges. He finds tw parts that fit and begins t delicately rebuild the curve f the bwl. “Nw yu try,” he says. I reach fr a lng, smth sectin and place it at the rim. Slwly, gently, we twist and turn the pieces, finding each match. It’s tricky but als kind f fun. When ur puzzle is cmplete, the bwl is tgether again. “This needs t dry. Cme back n Saturday, and we will finish it,” says Mr. Chen. Saturday mrning, I sneak ut early and knck n the Mr Chen’ dr. “Nw cmes my favrite part,” says him, as he mixes a tray f lacquer and shimmering gld pwder.“Take yur time, and fill in the crack lines.” At first my hand is shaking, but then I paint with smth strkes. When I’m finished, the bwl lks cmpletely different. Instead f the cracks blending in and disappearing, nw yu can see exactly where it was brken.
“This bwl has anther layer t its histry--it has been brken,repaired,and is prettier because f it.”said Mr. Chen while he was sending me ut.I’m a little nervus t shw Mm the bwl, but that night I bring it int her rm. She runs her fingertip ver the glden veins. “Mr. Chen helped me fix it,” I say. “It’s s beautiful,” she replies. “A new beginning.” I sit n the edge f her bed, and Mm reaches ut t me. Our hands jin with crisscrssed fingers. Maybe it finally des feel like a fresh start. “The bwl is strnger like this t,” I say. “Nw the cracks are what’s hlding it tgether.”
